One Artist's Journey Through the Games Industry | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 526

Please welcome experienced character artist, BAFTA judge, and games industry denizen Del Walker to Sacred+. I (Colin) first became aware of Del on Twitter, where he provides a pleasantly-outspoken perspective on our space, an understandable (albeit unfortunate) rarity from the dev side of things. I thus invited Del onto the show to get his opinions on all manner of vital subjects, but to be honest, we never even got there. Instead, Del and I jumped head-first into his impressive CV, learning a great deal about the games he worked on, his experiences at various studios, and what the life of a working games artist is like. After all, Del worked on Batman: Arkham Origins and Arkham Knight, Kill the Justice League, Halo Wars 2, Star Wars: Survivor, The Last of Us Online (!), and most recently Highguard. So naturally, he has much to say. And since he's existed within the walls of Rocksteady, Creative Assembly, Naughty Dog, London Studio, Respawn, Splash Damage, Wildlight, and most recently Dan Houser's exciting Santa Monica-based developer Absurd Ventures, it's safe to assume he has many a story to regale us with.

This was a amazing interview and I really enjoyed it! Makes me want to go play the last of us 2 after listening after putting it off for a while

Hell yeah, this is the kind of content I pay for. I want to hear from the lowly tester to a studio head and everything in between.

This was an awesome interview, especially as game artist myself, though on a much smaller scale with no AAA experience. Can't wait for part 2!

Vanzant

What a cool dude. Definitely have him on again.

Fantastic episode. I love the cander the guest expressed when talking about a game that was universally dunked by both media and gamers. Explaining that IT IS JUST NOT THAT EASY to make and succeed with video games, and looking for someone/something to blame is not productive. Not everyone can win. Not every game will be a success. That's just reality. God, it makes me angry how messed up the discourse about video games is in social media nowadays.

Anyone else noticed that Colin on an hand wants studios to do "what they are good at and what we want" (Rockstar) but also "can those guys do something else" (Santa Monica)? 🤔

Concord was a good game. Decent shooter. With promise for growth. That team could totally do a new game or go back with Concord and build it from the ground up, with getting people to play it at i.e. PAX and other ways to not "treat it as a we develop and release single player games".

Giovanni D'Amico

Such a great conversation. Really cool to get to know Del and would love to see him back again soon.
