PlayStation's self-inflicted physical games fiasco is nearing a month deep, and it seems fairly obvious at this point that nothing's going to change. The good news is that -- amongst all the chatter, arguing, and prognostication -- comes more info from the American market that indicates that Sony is pissing people off, yes, but also making a seemingly rational commercial decision from their perspective. Thus, we find ourselves in a continued bind: Through all of the screaming and insulting is salient data, should one be willing to look with sober eyes. We discuss. Plus: Marathon loses its game director, Bethesda vows to deliver a lot more Fallout, Rebel Wolves promises Mass Effect-like save migration for its nascent Blood of Dawnwalker series, NBA 2K27 skips PlayStation 4, Kratos gets recast in Amazon's God of War series, and more. We then wrap things up, as we always do, with listener inquiries from our audience. What are our expectations for Until Dawn 2? Did the elimination of crunch culture in some corners of the industry have unexpected downstream effects? Should Grand Theft Auto be held to account for the real-world violence it potentially inspires? Has Colin created a new mosquito bite-obliterating trend?

Totally obvious PSN was going to get hacked to shit. It's going to keep happening till Sony either: -Fixes the PSN -Gives players the option of physical media

SL

I think there’s a good chance the Fallout remasters get the Forza treatment. Release on Xbox and PC first, then come to Playstation 5 six months to a year later

Timothy Kirk

They said PlayStation games , when talking about physical copies selling 100k . So I assume PlayStation 1st party. Cause Matty did the math on third games and many have sold over 100k physically when it comes to 3rd party .

Jordan campos

Or they will give us some playstation stars for the interruption of service and call it a day.

BigDumbStupidIdiot

PlayStation actively hates the people giving it money

David Seger

Colin not understanding allergies before getting allergies is amazingly on brand

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

Here is my recent perspective as a physical games buyer. Availability is a problem and that is also attributed to the low sales. When RE9 came out it was unavailable on Amazon and at my local retail for over a month. RE9 is one of the biggest games of the year. The woman at Gamestop said people were coming in everyday asking for it. I'm not saying that if more available copies would have made a huge difference but its not nothing. Who knows how many of the people who actually wanted it physical were just frustrated and bought it digital? So now according to data they are digital customers and Sony can go "See see!! they want it digital". Ok bro...

Billy but not so Talented

With the physical games debate blowing up, I’ve talked to a bunch of random people at work and friends of friends. Honestly, it feels like most people bailed on discs the second digital became faster. Everyone has the exact same story about buying a disc, getting home excited to play, and end up falling asleep watching a massive update bar fill up or you miss launch night with your friends because the actual game isn't even on the disc. I still haven't seen a comparison to another medium that actually makes sense for how annoying that is.

Beef Burka

I live maybe 20 miles from Colin and never had bad allergies until my 40s, so more likely his age than location that started the allergies.

Timothy Kirk

Since we are talking physical sales , I would think world level would be more of a picture . Places like India and Europe are huge markets . PlayStation dominates Europe vs other consoles . Sometimes it just feels like Colin is giving the facts that fit his belief that we will fail to sway Sony more weight in conversation.

Michael Mashpotato

Although there is technically no salary cap, MLB has a luxury tax now. It’s very complicated and stupid rule, but it exists now and anything over 240 million gets a luxury tax.

Cloud

To the guy who didn't want to dance: you absolutely did not get "put in a position." You accepted the role as groomsman. Part of that role is doing what is expected of you in the wedding procession. I'm glad it all worked out and you didn't cause an issue, but you did not get put in a position, as Colin likes to say

Xemphanis

Nolan covers dialogue with music because the emotion of the scene is what’s important. Not what’s being said. You don’t have to like it but there’s a reason.

Poopy Butt Stinky Pants

Omg, thank you! I thought i was losing my hearing to the point where i went to a specialist to get my hearing checked. I told them I have to use subtitles to hear dialogue in movies. According to the specialist i have perfect hearing but then they suggested that maybe i have a learning disability. I know I probably have one of the A. D. 'S. I' ve never heard of other people having the same experience watching movies. It's nice to know I'm not the only one. Also, i sware my wife trolls me by constantly whispering so have to always ask her to repeat herself.

zepplinmike

So is having no interest in doing anything to treat them as he’s said in past shows, such as any of the many OTC options that would probably wipe out his symptoms with one tiny pill per day.

Dante B

Where has he ever said this

ChaosZwei+5

I think there's merit in saying Sony can't be a closed market ecosystem now that everything will be online only. That hasn't stopped steam bc they simply offer the best service and the people have chosen it. True capitalism should just be open market right? if they have to just become publishers so be it.

Screwed Mcfucked

I bet if TES 6 or Fallout 5, or even the Fallout remasters were exclusive to Xbox and weren't on steam you would see people still bite the bullet to use Microsofts PC launcher. It would be the first time an actual big game wasn't on Steam. I like metro exodus, and Alan wake 2 is cool. But come on. It's not Fallout. People would cave.

JL

I came to the comments to say the same thing. Over the past few years, I’ve had issues getting multiple games at launch if I didn’t pre-order them. After I beat resident evil Requiem I sold it locally for full MSRP because they were very hard to get still.

Piyush Pant

I remember Matty saying RE9 has sold more than 900k copies physically. That might have been globally but that's still not a small number

Mog

The real fight and differentiating factor is not physical versus digital at this point. It's "how good is your digital experience?" Sony is absolutely the worst at this. They just plain suck. It's maybe the one thing Xbox has on them. Better features. Backwards compatibility. Refunds. Written reviews. And now the proliferation of Xbox Play Anywhere. I'm not locked to my Xbox. I can load up a lot of my library on a PC as well. PlayStation just feels old when you take them first and foremost as a digital only company. They feel outdated in a way that makes it feel (to me anyway) like I'm burning my money when I purchase anything digitally from them. So they have a LOT of work to do.

A very special boy

You cant even find physical games where I'm at. It's basically pre order immediately, hope you get the game or wait months to get a copy. You're essentially forced to wait, have major fomo or buy online.

Deemac

That first write in on the Circana story is insane levels of tinfoil hat conspiracy shit, do people honestly think Playstation control all news sources now lol? Despite being mostly digital for a while now, I still pick up the occasional physical game, and I don't like this move they're taking - but man some people are really losing their minds over this huh

PairOfShuse

This was definitely a better discussion on the physical games front. I’m a HUGE supporter of physical media, not just games, and the updated numbers help more that were presented. Though like the one person who wrote in said that Sony produced I think 70 million physical games for the last year. If that’s the case, something isn’t adding up. In the meantime from this show a higher up at Sega, someone from Nippon Ichi, and Dan Houser all came out in support of physical media. More are doing so. Just wanted to mention this since it was said in the show none of the major developers are coming out in support of physical games.

KYisLife

Hard disagree that Astro Bot is just for adults, it’s my eight year old’s favorite game

Jack Johnson

Last PS console I owned was PS2 and I’ve been listening to your shows since your IGN days. You have an unfiltered voice which is refreshing. I hope one day you liberate and unshackle your playing habits outside of PlayStation one day as it will be a gift to all.

Poopy Butt Stinky Pants

Whenever you say no one wants a PS6 or that it’s going to sell poorly, I get irrationally annoyed because I genuinely want one! Maybe it’s because I’m an impulsive tech nerd, but I’ve owned every PlayStation and launch-window console—I even paid a $100 markup to a scalper for a Series X when stock was low. It’s been the usual amount of time between generations, and I can't wait for upgraded performance like guaranteed 60fps quality mode, 120fps performance, and path tracing. When you say "no one wants this," it feels like an assumption based on an echo chamber rather than hard data. I’d argue that high PC component prices make consoles even more appealing right now due to Sony’s economies of scale. What evidence or metrics are you looking at that point to zero demand? I respect your opinion, but I think there are way more people ready for next-gen hardware than you think. Plus I really cant wait to be up shits ass when the next gen upgraded game comes out. Lol

A miserable pile of secrets

To Brent (hopefully I heard that right) the gentlemen that wrote in about the open heart surgery. Good luck with your recovery. I had open heart surgery in December of 2024 at the age of 38 and now I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been in. Welcome to the zipper club.

Wesali

I can confirm i understood approximately 50% of the Odyssey dialogue due to the crap audio mixing. Spot on Chris!

Chris Evans

The physical games lovers need to realize they lost this war years ago. Hit the nail on the head awhile ago Colin, take the fight to legislators to protect our digital ownership.

Chris Evans

But the dodgers have made a mockery of it

Chris Evans

Xbox has always had a superior online experience, not even close.

Chris Evans

I want one just not at the commonly believed price point. I didn’t get a pro and chose to wait for a next gen, I want it.

Deemac

Also I find it funny how it often feels like the guys treat the handheld as a completely separate item, when in all reality it'll be a PS6 sku, be launched with the regular PS6 console, and Sony will probably report joint sales figures. Even in cases like the Circana story here where Colin mentions it in passing, it doesn't sound like they're factoring in the handheld when talking about the PS6 launch, how it'll do etc. They'll talk about how nobody is interested in next gen and the new machine, and then later on they might talk about how people are really excited about a new Playstation handheld lol. The arguments against next gen and nobody being excited is that it won't be anything really new, it won't have anything that sets it apart from PS5, there probably won't be any exciting new features etc - doesn't the existence of a handheld change all that? I broadly agree that if PS6 was just a shiny new box which can run your current games better (and probably won't have many exclusives), then sure, I'd be totally in agreement with them and I doubt I'd be rushing out to get that. But a new PS handheld? I'm there day 1, can't wait for that. While I'm sure it'll be a softer launch than PS4/PS5 (mainly due to the cost of tech nowadays, the physical game factor not so much) - I still think it could be a relatively successful launch, in large parts due to the handheld. If they've designed a nice portable machine, Cerny has worked his magic with the hardware, and they do a good job with the marketing and launch of this thing - I bet it'll do pretty well tbh. Of course the price is the other big factor here, but I think people are getting ahead of themselves just assuming it'll cost 1k. I guess we'll see

Xemphanis

You could check the internet.

Antonio Rodriguez

I agree brother. Steam and Xbox generally treat you well as a customer when interacting in their space. Playstation just doesn't. God forbid you want a refund on PSN.

They Now Call Me UNC.

I want Sega to have a comeback with the Dreamcast 2 to dethrone Sony.

Wayde

Can't lose a fight you never were in. These companies have been setting this up for decades. Just look at the percent of titles that had physical versions. Ps3 over 80 percent physical ps4 55 percent ps5 24 percent. They act like consumers decided to go digital when in fact they have been slowly nudging their base that way. Ps5 digital version was 100 dollars cheaper and easier to find is a prime example of this

Save The Game Media

Just an anecdotal experience here: been to 2 different Targets in my area. Both have removed the Xbox and PlayStation sections entirely… it’s just 2 aisles for Nintendo games now as their games section. Walmart near me still has everything, although no Xbox consoles and just digital cards

Glen Yelenovic

Colin is a fake Christopher Nolan fan

Gooch Gobbler

That's so funny, I also use the sports stuff yall talk about to relate to my boss who is also a Jets fan from Long Island

Austin Evans

A year ago if I was told I was getting a new PlayStation hand held was coming I would be ecstatic. Right now when it comes to PlayStation, I’ve lost all enjoyment. Ever since the news about physical media, I have canceled PlayStation plus and I’ve not even turned on my PS, not out of protest I just lost all desire to. Sonys callousness towards their consumers has l made me stop caring about their console in general. I’m sure eventually they’ll be a game that will pull me back in but till then I’ll keep enjoying steam and switch 2.

They Now Call Me UNC.

Colin keeps using the anecdote of the college roommate who plays MLB 20 on PS4 everyday. How does he know this is still true? We need an update on that guy to confirm its legitimacy.

Dante B

You could be helpful, but I can tell you’d prefer to be snarky, so go with god.

Hammertime44

The point was that adults are paying for it. The game is for everyone.

Gooch Gobbler

No one cared about Memento? Even as a kid I knew it was a classic

Gooch Gobbler

That's a really bad reason then if true lol could just be silent or obviously tuned down even more so you know you are not "supposed" to hear it

Wayde

With regards to the sales numbers of physical just released. The real question should be is that number low because sony has been throttling disc production on purpose or is there hundred of thousands of copies sitting on shelves? I cant find copies of certain games released the past few years because they are not making enough to satisfy demand. They have had their foot on the scale for decades now and it shows.

Xemphanis

It’s not a bad decision. It’s his decision for HIS art. You don’t have to like it. If it’s a war scene for example, and there’s tons of gunfire going off, would it make more sense to mute the audio, or to make the war sounds louder? Art is never a simple this or that. And yes, I make art.

Xemphanis

So I’ll try to be less snarky because I have 5 minutes at work. When I see something online and I think it’s interesting or may not be true, I look it up because I have the internet in my pocket. I’m a busy dad who left a comment on a podcast about something they said while I was listening. I heard about Nolan’s sound mixing choices years ago during some film promotion and I’m a big fan, so it’s just a piece of knowledge I have because I love movies. He’s one of my favorite directors. You can Google it and Gemini will give you an explanation. I’m sure there’s even more detailed articles or videos about it. Be curious.

TheWubbz

SOMEBODY GET THESE PHYSICAL BEGGARS OUT OF HERE. It already slowed down. The comments on posts are way down. The majority of these boycotters will purchase PlayStation games well past 2028

JustInsane

A lot of people know Unreal Engine that don’t even make games for a living. Agree with easily replaced part. I also think we are going to start seeing solo developers create high quality end looking experiences in Unreal very soon.

Stephen

Digital is not subsidizing physical. You have been overcharged for digital.

Xavier Gomez

Love this show. The movie takes are hilariously bad but love the show nonetheless. We listen for games coverage after all.

Beef Burka

My point wasn't that there can be no fight for better consumer rights on games without physical media, it was that we can fight for both. Some people think it is an either or thing. I was also saying that when we fight for digital rights, we need to have a more clear idea of what we want and what is possible. Some people are calling for the removal of DRM, and I was pointing out, that is not likely to happen, and as Colin said, sometimes when you get what you want, there is a monkey's paw effect.

Beef Burka

Nolan does it on purpose, he said as much when Tenet came out.

Beef Burka

I have to believe Colin was grasping at straws there for things Sony could say to make people "understand". I can't imagine he really believes that prices for games are higher for everyone because of a few physical sales. He's said himself that the actual production cost is a pittance and as few of them sell, their loss of portions of a sales to retailers has to be a pittance too. Sony would most likely have adopted the Nintendo strategy of charging more for physical long ago if that were the case as well.

Josephine

His best film and one of the best from the new millennium.

Benjamin Pope

To piggyback on the ephemeral multiplayer experience talk. I play still TLoU Factions to this day since 2013. Obviously I play other games, but I still get weekly Factions matches in. My point being these ephemeral multiplayer experiences are usually the best ones and the ones we're always talking about. Be it Halo 3, Counter Strike, TLoU Factions; none of these game were built to be played forever, yet all of these games are still being played without or very little way of monetization. Just kinda says something about where we are with multiplayer design right now.

Jason Thompson

Correction: Simpsons Hit and Run is a GTA clone. Road Rage is the crazy taxi clone.
