As They Gas, All I See Are Hieroglyphic Patterns | Sacred Symbols, Episode 421

PlayStation's self-inflicted physical games fiasco is nearing a month deep, and it seems fairly obvious at this point that nothing's going to change. The good news is that -- amongst all the chatter, arguing, and prognostication -- comes more info from the American market that indicates that Sony is pissing people off, yes, but also making a seemingly rational commercial decision from their perspective. Thus, we find ourselves in a continued bind: Through all of the screaming and insulting is salient data, should one be willing to look with sober eyes. We discuss. Plus: Marathon loses its game director, Bethesda vows to deliver a lot more Fallout, Rebel Wolves promises Mass Effect-like save migration for its nascent Blood of Dawnwalker series, NBA 2K27 skips PlayStation 4, Kratos gets recast in Amazon's God of War series, and more. We then wrap things up, as we always do, with listener inquiries from our audience. What are our expectations for Until Dawn 2? Did the elimination of crunch culture in some corners of the industry have unexpected downstream effects? Should Grand Theft Auto be held to account for the real-world violence it potentially inspires? Has Colin created a new mosquito bite-obliterating trend? A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. I am behind on episodes so apologies if you have done this. You need to reach out to Louis Rossmann regarding the digital ownership fight from last week. He is the big supporter in this space. The issue is around copyright law.

Colin is right about digital being the future. If people just take a moment and apply some critical thought, it makes no sense for Sony to serve a shrinking audience that repays their service with; a used games market that makes them no money, which hurts their single player games initiative (the used market damages games without MTX or DLC). he is being super annoying about this though, his way of arguing makes me want to reach through the screen and f**k knock his smug grin into the next month.

Great write-in Darksideofthemoon, if you're there.

Surge!

By the mere number of copies sold, no, there isn't a direct correlation between GTA and violence. But I do think it's interesting that Grand Theft Auto is the massive success that it is in America. I think of the chicken-and-egg question in such moments: is our culture influenced by that which is around us, or is the media the one reflecting the times? Probably both, with no way to know for certain which is the bigger culprit.

At this point pirating no longer feels wrong
