Sacred Symbols, Episode 424 | Think Someone's About To Be Carved (Patreon)

On PlayStation 5 in the near future, you're going to be hacking, slashing, stabbing, and serrating your enemies with reckless abandon. For starters, the dangerously-clawed Wolverine emerges in September, along with a newly-announced special edition PS5 console, a couple of DualSense controllers, and even some plates for your existing hardware. (Plus, the previews are quite positive!) September also provides us with horroresque Halloween: The Game from IllFonic, which interestingly enough won't be released in Australia and New Zealand for the stupidest reason. Come October, hack-and-slash RPG Phantom Blade 0 joins the fray -- a long-in-development Chinese game that's getting its own State of Play imminently -- not to mention Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition, packing new single-player content galore alongside the return of the Katana-wielding Atsu. Other news this week includes a surprise PS3-era Lord of the Rings drop, insane data about Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders, and more. But we end, as we always do, with listener inquiries. Will Sony really eschew any sort of external disc drive for PlayStation 6, if only for backwards compatibility purposes? Why is visiting a new town in an RPG typically such an exciting experience? I've never been one for special edition consoles/different colour plates etc. (very much also from the "I don't give a fuck what the console looks like" school of thought) - but I do find it to be a pretty neat detail on the Wolverine plates, that you can actually see the fan inside behind the claw marks, so it's not just a blacked out effect on the plate Also regarding the Q on PS5 discs on PS6, I've been saying for a while I still think they'll offer an optional disc drive, which they can market as solely for back compatibility reasons if they want to make that clear (also I think Chris is spot on that nobody who would be confused by it, will be the people buying it anyway) - and it would also be a well needed bit of good PR, as a show to try and accommodate the physical gamers in at least one small way. Thing is they can't say anything about it yet, because obviously the digital move is all about PS6 so they can't really elaborate on anything else until next year Even if they weren't planning on doing it, it would be a very wise decision imo to put it in motion now.

I completely agree. I’ve muted a bunch of accounts on Twitter, including Does It Play. At this point the physical-media discourse has become exhausting. I even find myself skipping more Sacred Symbols segments lately when the conversation circles back to physical vs. digital. And I say that as someone who collects physical games and thinks ownership, preservation, resale, and consumer choice are worth advocating for. But there’s a difference between advocating for something and turning it into your entire identity. The constant outrage, purity tests, and “you’re either with us or against us” mentality have become unbearable. Some of it genuinely feels less like consumer advocacy and more like a collective mid-life crisis among older enthusiasts realizing the hobby no longer revolves around them. You can care deeply about physical media without treating everyone who buys a digital game like a child who needs to be scolded. The whole thing has become weird, tribal, and honestly pretty worrisome.

The video about the guy running out of an alley during a shooting, who was then shot by a cop happened in San Diego. It was a 16 year old kid who unfortunately died from the wound. The family sued the police department and won $30 million in the largest police dept settlement in US history. It was determined that the cop did not follow proper department procedure. But hey at least body cams encourage good cop behavior right? 🙄

I wanted to give some clarity on something that was mentioned. You guys really over value the US comic books industry. All of the US based comic books equal anywhere between 1.2 billion to 1.6 billion worldwide. That’s taking out manga and manwha. Japan alone has manga sales of 4.5-4.7 billion dollars. When you account for manga globally it goes between 10-15 billion. Manga and anime are vastly more popular than any US based comic. The only reason why people get confused about that is because of the Marvel movies. As a side note, Colin needs to just finally play Nier Replicant and Nier Automata. He’s liked Stellar Blade and Beast of Reincarnation, it’s a crime he hasn’t taken the time to really give the Nier series a chance. Highly inventive, deep, and truly is right up his alley.

The only reasonable scenario for PS6 is to make a dongle that you can plug in the PS5 external drive and handshake for your PS6. Sony has to throw us some kind of bone here if we are suppose to accept the all digital future. I'm not leaving my stuff behind or having my PS5 sitting around if I wanna play the old games. If they don't have any solution to people who want to take over their libraries than this is going to be it for me. What little selling points the PS6 may have is dwindling if they don't figure this out.

Col, a year to put the clothes away is nuts. Out of all the roguelike modes, Ragnarok’s is the only one that’s essential to the story. Don’t want to spoil why but it’s a must play. yeah, that's a great example of the 'popular' pronunciation just being straight-up better than the official one, so I think it makes sense that everyone says it that way. "Prahg-mah-ta" sounds cool and exotic, "Pragmata" (with short-a vowels) sounds grating and annoying. You know, like me when I wrote in lololol

You were correct about data centers using closed loop cooling. Water usage isn’t zero of course, but it’s not trillions of gallons or some nonsense. Electricity use is very high though.

In a cooling system with evaporative cooling towers, yes. Inside the sealed loop of a closed loop cooling system? No. You only need to replenish whatever is lost through seal seepage. Like they mentioned in the podcast, it’s similar to liquid cooling in a PC. You don’t have water actively evaporating and condensation forming inside your PC case.
