Hello! It's me, Colin. Please welcome Tom from Moore's Law Is Dead and the Broken Silicon podcast back to Sacred+ for what feels like the millionth time. It pleases me to have MLID back in our presence so that we can discuss a myriad of pressing issues, paramount among them the 'digital guerrilla war' breaking out surrounding the PlayStation brand these last few months. You may recall that Tom called this exact thing on his last appearance, that Sony has much more to worry about from relentless online denizens that it does from its own core customer base. The big question is: Is the onslaught of negativity working? Or is this all yet another in a long line of internet mirages? We touch on tons of other topics in-depth, too, including the latest news and info on PlayStation 6 and Xbox Helix, price tolerance (or intolerance) when it comes to consumer spending in the gaming space, the prohibitive corporate cost of cloud gaming, the idea that PlayStation 4 may never go away (nonetheless PS5), and much more. Please enjoy!

Oh hell yeah it's time for my favorite podcast SolarBoyz!

Johnny Lamotte

It’s not negativity when we have been saying the same things for the last 10 years maybe even a little more. At some point you need to realize we have good points. Sony has trouble on their hands because after 10 long years we are all very sick of it now. Has nothing to do with grifting, nothing to do with being hateful, and I hate how our voices on this podcast is always merged into the people you hate on Twitter.

Ryan

They should launch a new show called ‘Colin was Mogged’ and it’s just every time he talked to Tom lmao

Johnny Lamotte

It’s wild… why does it seem like Colin only follows grifters on Twitter and uses that to justify his stances, because his stances have been awful and wildly uninformed with this topic and others… it never used to be the case. It started around Covid believe it or not lol Covid changed a lot 😵‍💫

BigDumbStupidIdiot

At this point I don't even care if Sony brings back physical media. I want them to suffer financially for treating gamers like shit.

Ryan

The amount of headspace the bottom 10% of gaming (people/bots/AI on Twitter) is genuinely spreading to every facet of what Colin talks about and it’s so frustrating

Johnny Lamotte

Yup! Still love the podcasts and everything they do but frustrating is the right word. It hurts my head sometimes when I hear some of the crap.

Marco Maluf

Colin is acting just like sony, forcing the reality he believes in, ignoring the complaints and putting us with the bots on twitter, then he doesn’t understand why the industry is flopping mentioning a bunch of first party shitty games like we have a lot of option but we are just doing it for the hate, totally disconnected from the audience just like sony nowadays

Frank G.

I was ready to jump ship before it was cool 🤓😎 seriously though, fuck Sony. Cling on to Spider-Man as long as you can. You're gonna need em.

Marco Maluf

Colin is acting just like sony, forcing the reality he believes in, ignoring the complaints and putting us with the bots on twitter, then he doesn’t understand why the industry is flopping mentioning a bunch of first party shitty games like we have a lot of option but we are just doing it for the hate, totally disconnected from the audience just like sony nowadays. I follow him since the Beyond days and the change is clear. Micah make much more grounded comments about the industry and how the games are today than he does, and she is insane hahahaah j/k love u micah

Izzy Smalls

Tom is clearly a smart dude but man, he has some delusional takes

Frank

Colin has got to chill with calling people retards

Whiner

Twitter is not a real place and outside of it most people don’t care. That’s why this online perception that everything is terrible and PlayStation is doomed never actually aligns with reality.

Whiner

People need to understand that they are in an echoe chamber and that even if it seems like the everyone online is mad about something it’s not even a real drop in the bucket. Which is why Sony constantly ignores most of y’all lol

Whiner

Locke be talking from the perspective of what he would like to see happen which is the primary problem with people on the internet

Phil

Some really odd takes in this episode. Think Tom is sniffing a lot of the physical copium. They aren't backtracking. No one is switching to Xbox.

Marco Maluf

If Sony continues this path, and xbox presents a better proposal, I will or pc and ps5 will be my last sony console

BigDumbStupidIdiot

Side note: thinking the average wage is $33 an hour unbelievable out of touch. Most real jobs are barely over $20. The "average" pay is $68,640 is skewed so high it's not even funny

Tony Upstairs Lazzaro

Cmon man you and I both know Witcher 4 will skip PlayStation 🤣. He's good at leaks but his takes suck a donkeys dick. No offense to any donkeys reading this.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

I think he and most people can live with the no physical on PS6 reality. But we need to have a solution to play PS5 disc games on PS6. ideally a dongle to plug in the PS5 disc drive. But the damage is coming from the silence. Now since we don't know the negativity festers and multiplies. So it's easy and accurate to call Sony a sterile, soulless corporation that doesn't give 2 shits about its customers. Also if the new Xbox does play Steam games I will for sure think about getting it over the PS6.

TheWubbz

Some of these gamers are acting like Sony is threatening them at gun point. Sony sell game. Buy game if like. Don’t buy game if no like. Insert disc collection in PS5. Life move on. Ride wife

Johnny Lamotte

Capcom has made 3 game of the year games just this year. PlayStation takes 8 years to release barely decent games. They are in loads of trouble if they don’t wake up

Addison117

To the people who have been having RSS problems lately, I use the app podcast addict (on my android phone Colin) if there is a delay it's usually up about 10 minutes past 12pm when they are supposed to go live. Maybe try that app out hopefully it works.

Addison117

I don't care if the only reason a game is play anywhere is because Microsoft paid them, I still get it on 2 platforms from one purchase. So it's a win.

Izzy Smalls

Brother, "everyone" is mad at Sony and PS5s are selling out right now lol. 90% of the playerbase have no idea wtf is going on with the physical disc situation or even give af. Yes Capcom is killing it right now but they also had Crapcom era that took years for them to get their shit together.

Izzy Smalls

If you think Xbox isnt also abandoning physical you are delusional.

Phil

Also if you have been collecting games both physical and digital on Playstation for the last 20 years, how does moving to Xbox help anything?

Jacob Lesperance

He is right. He just used the wrong metric and should have used the median. Which is $23 an hour. Especially when talking about inflation. The median is what he should have used. The dunning Kruger effect in play.

Pretty Much Satan

Frank has got to chill with trying to police other people’s choice of language.

Jacob Lesperance

Put aside using the average is not the right way to measure how people are doing financially. The median is the far more accurate way to measure that. Being said let's use the department of labors averages. Colin is right. The average wage is $33 an hour. 68k a year. The department of labor also says the average cost of living is 78k a year, lol. So even using the average people are still not making enough to survived based on the source he used. Doesn't take away from the point that games are cheaper than ever and essentials have exploded in costs. But, the argument that people are just making noise and have tons of expandable income is completely out of touch with reality

Izzy Smalls

Yeah i may be wrong about that

Ryan Lemieux

Love Tom, but isn’t he wrong about black body radiation as far as cooling things in space goes? All sorts of things cool themselves in space including the ISS and the former space shuttle. Not saying a data center wouldn’t be an engineering challenge, but far from impossible.

Johnny Lamotte

You and Colin are way over reacting the “mad”… most gamers agree the character designs Sony have been making are bad, and the stories have been mid and borderline cringe at times. Again that doesn’t mean gaming sucks and I use my ps5 all the time. Am I playing Sony games? Not usually no. It’s other devs and publisher games that have been knocking it out of the park. Why do you and Colin not use any logic at all. Sony making bad games does not = “there are no games” and yes it is frustrating. Also, live service is trash and killed EA and Ubisoft and most likely will kill Sony eventually as well.

Ryan

But what about the bottom line for the shareholders??

Ryan

I’m very interested in seeing what the new Xbox looks like. I’ll gladly switch in a second with the way Sony has been headed.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

Because most people have also been collecting Steam games since 2014 and those can still be played TODAY on any PC. So moving to an Xbox that is Steam compatible will be a larger library.

Ryan

He’s 100% dead wrong on things not cooling/warming themselves in space lol

Captain Falcon

Excellent episode. Colin and Tom bounce off eachother well

Johnny Lamotte

Stop comparing everything to Twitter. It’s delusional. Not everyone is grifting.

KYisLife

It’s not a guarantee that PS6 will sell well at launch. Please remember their bad execution with PS Vita. Colin thought at the time that it would kick the 3DS’s teeth in. PS6 will likely be an amazing system, but the fanbase may not be there.

Jordan Wray

He is correct about traditional cooling methods not working, to simplify it, the ISS and other space instruments convert heat energy into light/radiation for heat dissipation into Space. Not working is perhaps incorrect, drastically less effective and more difficult to implement is probably the fairer phrasing.

NeO JD

PS6 is going to be a battle of this is cheaper than a PC at similar performance vs what can’t I already play on my PS5.

crosstriangleOsquare

I really don't think people are going to look at Sony as a bad marketer for GTA6 when people are bombing the comments with NO DISC, NO BUY when Rockstar themselves decided to go all digital. Did I miss something? Or did that bit of logic from Tom not set off any alarms for Colin?

Chris Evans

What was he mugged about? Colin’s info and data are 100% correct Tom is just making guesses and assumptions

Chris Evans

It doesn’t really change the fact that gaming is and has remained wildly inexpensive and value rich compared to other hobbies/ luxuries.

Chris Evans

If Microsoft comes out with a disc drive and takes a financial hit on their console by pricing it cheaper next gen could get interesting.

BigDumbStupidIdiot

I was more annoyed at using a skewed statistic than the point itself. Gaming is an incredibly affordable adult hobby. I think millennials and zoomers gamers are at a financially stressful point in their lives, starting families and paying rent for the first time

Asha Shwarma’s Karma

I guess I’m the living embodiment of the Vincent Vega meme, because I’m looking around, I hear and understand the complaints, and I’m like……wuh? I sit on my couch, I turn on my PS5, I have more content than I’ve ever had in my life (and I’m an Xer that started on a Commodore 64), and I’m thoroughly pleased with the content I’m playing. From Lovish to South of Midnight, from Ragnarok to Ghost, I’m entirely entertained. I live out of a suitcase during the NFL season, and I’ve got a Portal I can play my games in a hotel room. Soon I’ll have a PS6 and I’ll be able to play on my flights. I’m sick of nothing except the noise, and in the last three months I’ve gone out of my way to purchase every game day one even though I’ll never get to playing them all, just to counteract the noise.

Asha Shwarma’s Karma

I’ve not been treated like shit. I have a horde of games that I enjoy playing. I’m quite pleased.

Asha Shwarma’s Karma

Sony fucked up their pipeline for sure, but it looks like the dev schedule is back on track. Like Colin mentioned, this fall and spring are stacked. I hope at the very least that the PS6 handheld gets announced this spring/summer and I can play proper games on my flights and in my hotel rooms.

Asha Shwarma’s Karma

I’d be the same except I already jumped ship from Microsoft to Sony for the exact same issue. I bought a bunch of good box D&D games for my Commodore 64 three decades ago. Microsoft launched the original Xbox without a floppy drive and I had no way to play my physical games on their console! I wept and I wept and then I started the “No three and half, then not in my gaff” movement. At least three people agreed with me on MySpace.

Walk Forward Cutscene

Listening to Colin talk about play anywhere is one of the most out of touch and uninformed things I’ve ever heard. I buy and play a lot of games, and I’ve only double-dipped a handful of times for my all-timers. And when I do, I’m buying the second version on a deep discount. If these are my habits, there’s no way a more casual gamer is frequently buying multiple copies of a game. The publishers aren’t losing much by participating.

Samus1611

I don’t think Sony will backtrack on physical games But I am absolutely paying attention to Xbox. They have a one off chance to convert me back to them. I left Xbox in the 360 days when the machine wouldn’t stay alive more than a couple months. I’ll convert to Microsoft in a millisecond if they keep physical on helix. Likely they won’t. I have almost 500 platinums and over 400 ps4 discs and 175 ps5 discs. Ps5 pro is my final Sony product. I’ve already went and bought a switch 2 and started investing in games there. F Sony

John Wick's pencil

I don't know many people who make $33 dollers per hour. It's more like $22.

Gooch Gobbler

How can Colin go on an on about how important engagement and microtransactions are to these companies and then not get cloud gaming? It's money/engagement from people who would never give them a dollar otherwise. I would never cloud game but I've been trying to get my broke friends into it instead of giving up on gaming entirely. It's better than nothing. These are people that want to play Peak and stuff like that, not Witcher 4 at 120 FPS. Throw in some ads and recurring revenue? I get it

Poopoo Platter

That wasn't a take he just said he heard a rumor that witcher 4 might be the game

y_kyn

It is cold in space ...

Aaron

Of course Tom uses AI daily. Sounds like where he gets a lot of his information from lol
