Are the Digital Guerrilla Warriors Beating PlayStation? | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 533

Hello! It's me, Colin. Please welcome Tom from Moore's Law Is Dead and the Broken Silicon podcast back to Sacred+ for what feels like the millionth time. It pleases me to have MLID back in our presence so that we can discuss a myriad of pressing issues, paramount among them the 'digital guerrilla war' breaking out surrounding the PlayStation brand these last few months. You may recall that Tom called this exact thing on his last appearance, that Sony has much more to worry about from relentless online denizens that it does from its own core customer base. The big question is: Is the onslaught of negativity working? Or is this all yet another in a long line of internet mirages? We touch on tons of other topics in-depth, too, including the latest news and info on PlayStation 6 and Xbox Helix, price tolerance (or intolerance) when it comes to consumer spending in the gaming space, the prohibitive corporate cost of cloud gaming, the idea that PlayStation 4 may never go away (nonetheless PS5), and much more. Please enjoy!

Respectfully, am I the only one that rolls their eyes at what Tom has to say? How can the info he "has" be correct if nothing related to the PS6 has come to fruition? Anyone can say anything about anything and sound half-right. He talks very pretentiously about what he "knows" and it makes for an unpleasant listening.

The PS6 hasn’t been announced so we don’t know yet. As far as I know his PC info has been right? I like his episodes, my only negative from the last one where he had some crazy ideas of what the PS6 could potentially could do.

Colin can’t understand why a publisher would be pro consumer, by giving away a PC copy. It’s the opposite policy of milking your customers for every penny, which Sony seems to be following.

I really think Sony’s financials at the end of this quarter will not give almost any signs if anything has changed from any sort of boycott. Sony knew about Black Ops 1/2, GTA pre orders, Wolverine etc. so I fully expect financials to be higher. As Tom said, financials soon won’t necessarily provide much info on the current state. This also depends on how they conduct themselves going forward into PS6’s reveal. I’m curious about the numbers, but yeah don’t think we can definitively say that the boycott ‘hasnt worked’. Though for the record, I’m not really sure the impact will be that substantive if at all. As Tom said, think it comes more down to optics and overall, I think the optics have been pretty bad on Sony through this gen. Question is do Sony care lol

Zane

He was the first person to say anything about there being a PS6 handheld and it's common knowledge now. Also leaked the exact specs of the PS5 Pro and leaked PSSR, for which Sony copyright striked him. It is a fact that he has contacts at AMD who know what PlayStation is making

There you go. Digital foundry has quoted him, he’s def got the sources!

I am genuinely interested to see how Wolverine performs. When the concept of a wolverine game came up I thought it sounded pretty cool, but I couldn't care less about anything superhero/marvel related at this point. Spiderman and Batman tend to remain popular no matter what, but Marvel movies have struggled since endgame and I could not care less about the Wolverine game at this point. Now if it comes out and is a huge surprise id be open to getting it at that point

Don’t forget Wolverine is pretty popular, him and Deadpool did make a billion at the box and it seems like marvel is in more positive direction with doomsdays pre-order sales.

JoshM

Yeah I’m kinda unsure what’s gonna happen with Wolverine. Thinking it’ll still sell a ton but probably not as much as Spider-Man? But idk really

Yeah Colin is in a bubble on a lot of topics. People that double-dip on multiple platforms are a niche of a niche, so giving away a complementary PC copy costs the publisher very little.

My only issue with Tom was him claiming in 2020 that there would be games that would only be possible on PS5 due to the "magical SSD." But that was more of a prediction. He literally just leaked the PS5 Pro 2 years ago, so I think his sources are solid.

A loyal customer that enthusiastically buys your next game is more valuable than an enthusiast that reluctantly buys the current game on another platform, because you were not generous with them. The good will CD Projekt Red has created by giving away the upcoming Witcher 3 remaster is more important than the amount of revenue that they could have extracted by charging for it. With their generous behavior, I am now much more likely to buy the new Witcher 3 DLC as well as Witcher 4.
