A Vicious Cycle | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 138

Who knew that we'd talk about Six Days in Fallujah for two weeks in a row some 12 years after the original iteration of the contentious game was cancelled. Yet, it's all our sphere wants to talk about, as the FPS revival of Six Days is drawing the ire of predictable industry-types. The question, though, is simple: When does criticism of a game stop being about the game itself, and start being about the critic? This is a deep subject, so naturally, we dive right in. Plus: The DualSense class action lawsuit is on, Avengers is getting its PS5 update very soon, Legends of Mana, Ninja Gaiden, and even Xbox-exclusive Stubbs the Zombie are all PS4-bound, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Does G4's revival have any prayer of succeeding? Following the recent Nintendo Direct, are we hankering for a State of Play? Does Project Triangle Strategy tickle Colin's SRPG itch? Is Chris in action figure form as eldritch as it sounds? A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. NVM. I'm dumb and didn't read the time stamps to skip them. So I'll just assume they've always been there haha.

In the lead up to the release of Modern Warfare 2019 the writers said the game wouldn't be political but it was actually very political as many of the missions were based on real conflicts in the Middle East, for example there was a mission based on Benghazi. I think they were only saying this to kind of keep marketing for the game a bit more neutral to avoid backlash from certain audiences. I believe 6 Days in Fellujah will be a similar case to this.

As a cisgendered male of white/Asian origin with strong ties to the Latino community I felt personally offended that you fellas didn’t talk about the possibility of a porn spinoff called Six Nights In Fallujah. Be well 😎

Those good old original podcast beyond episodes with you and Greg, and Ryan Clements ofcourse were truly hilarious. I was like 14 at the time and just wondering wtf are these guys getting paid for this. :)

I too find it sad how Adam Sessler has gone off the deep end. For a long time, he an Tom Bissell were my absolute favorite game reviewers. Even though there are some great reviewers out there now, none of them come close. My only hope for him is that he hasn’t lost his creative touch, but he’s got a lot to prove because his Twitter persona is so goddam unlikeable.

As an apache helicopter with gender non conforming glittersexual sociopath with strong ties to the kekistani community, I agree.

Yep. He was part of a YouTube channel around the time the PS4 launched called Rev3Games, that was my introduction to him, and I really enjoyed his content. Then I followed him on twitter and oh boy 😂him and Jim Sterling are incredibly toxic and insane lol.

You hit the nail on the head about narcissism in social media, Col. I’ve been thinking about that lately and I’ve been really trying to mitigate my own narcissism by not posting about almost anything. I’ve been listening to a ton of Jordan Peterson and he talks about that a lot. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I totally agree with you.

The far left and the far right are equally censorious, and always have been... horseshoe theory has some merit lol. The centre right and centre left have always defended freedom of expression. The only difference is that it's the far left who hold all the reigns of power now (big tech, the media, government, universities, etc), so it's their turn to be the authoritarians. It's the right who are feeling the effects of this most now, so they're the ones more vocally in support of free speech, the same way the left were more vocal back when the Christian right were censoring them. That's how it comes across to me anyway, would love to hear people's views on this.

We don't deserve the three people on this podcast. Nobody is perfect but I'm glad for the sanity you've brought to this space. Everyone else is preaching division and honestly we just wanna have fun playing games and have civil conversations about them. Thank you guys

Absolutely, the shoe is now on the other foot and we are all acting accordingly. The only ones being anywhere near consistent are the people who are not tribalist

The Sessler situation is so disappointing... He was actually the reason I started to take video games seriously back in the day. His work at Rev 3 games was great, and his Ken Levine Interviews are the best out there. He fell so far, so hard. Personal subscription to ideology is the heart of divisiveness.

Zack Fair

It's actually against the law for British troops to be in a battle when white phosphorus is used

JD

Excellent conversation on 6 Days. The most thoughtful and nuanced I've seen in the media yet.

That's the point I believe. Cod and six days are saying that they will not be giving their personal take and tell the player how to feel. They are leaving it up to the player how to feel with the events put infront of them. I call it more trusting your audience to be able to piece together their own minds.

Hawk_757

This ridiculous “woke” journalism is the worst part about gaming today. I seriously can’t think of anything else that comes close. Well, maybe publishers and devs misleading consumers about the quality of their games gets pretty close lol.

BlindRiot

Sadly, it seems to me that most people don’t make arguments these days...it’s become far too easy to just take a position. I’m old enough to remember things called context and nuance.

Dear Colin, I've been gone for quite some time due to financial circumstances and am happy to have been able to re-sub! I noticed you and Chris were talking about Rockstar Games' next potential title. I don't know why they don't bring back Manhunt as a Battle Royale game. Also, with your recent foray into game design, have you considered applying your knowledge of history to story-writing. There's a lot of lesser known stories from history that I feel would transition well into a JRPG format.

jordan allen burton

I wouldn't try to engage anyone you disagree with in the type of dialogue you're interested in.

You might and I might but they simply AREN'T. I think it will not be productive, not because of you but because of them. I think it's folly. Even IF you got someone to agree to go on your show (they won't) you're only gonna get an aggressive guest that will be belligerent. Mark my words.

Hi5 Music

I'm glad Chris was there to reign in what Colin thinks as the "left". Colin will often poke (or be poked by) annoying woke liberals and then that's what he views as "the left". Actual lefties don't give a shit. They want out of the REAL wars. They're concerned with relief for the country and the actual incompetence/corruption that's preventing it.

I'm starting to realize that I have more in common with further leftward people, because they also hate identity politics.

The situation surrounding this upcoming game reminds me of recent controversies surrounding Ubisoft games like Far Cry 5 and The Division 2. Games which the gaming media was outright annoyed that they didn't 'take a political stance'. The thing is, both games have plenty of political themes, and the various characters and groups have different political ideology, religious beliefs and lifestyles, but it's up to the player to interpret them. That level of nuance is appreciated by the fanbase, yet the gaming media is angry that the games don't take a more black and white, 'right vs wrong' approach, which is just childish.
