Rewriting Star Wars Episode VII | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 159

We're pretty hard on Star Wars here on KnockBack. But it's only because we care so damn much! Yet, we're rarely (if ever) asked to put up or shut up when it comes to the topic... until now. As voted on by our listeners, this episode is the first of three that will be dedicated to the new Star Wars trilogy, but through a simple lens: If given free reign, what would our new trilogy look like, one that takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi and includes as much or as little of established lore as possible? Well, today, we open our respective trilogies with our Episode VIIs. Dagan sets up a tale of familial redemption through haunting spectres of Darth Vader's past. Colin writes about an out-of-control corporation commanded by a religious prophet intent on showing the lies of the Force. They are very different stories from each other, and certainly different from canon. Naturally, we hope you enjoy both. A new episode of KnockBack launches each Monday morning. Been waiting for this topic for a while

Damn, for the second knockback video we get a star wars topic, this is awesome.

brody_low

Knockback is such an incredible podcast. Great job Colin and Dagan!!

Jason Bolla

5 minutes in, this is the video series I was looking for - so awesome seeing you two interact together. Also, Dagan looks even younger in street clothes. I hope I look that good at 47.

Robert Schultz

Awesome episode, makes me sad that Disney couldn’t do better. Colin, is your antagonist a male Karen???

Robert Schultz

I had the video running while doing work, about 30 minutes passed between looking at that screen. In those 30 minutes both Colin and Dagan were shrouded in darkness 😂

Ryan Harvey

Colin, when you say that Luke went with Karen I cracked up 😂. I’m sure it’s spelled Charon or something ,but it just made me think of Karen compilations you always talk about. Edit: I wanted to come back and remark about your guys stories at the end. Guys, I gotta say, greeeat stuff! I wish either of these could be what we got. Kinda sad actually.

Will Hahn

Has anyone noticed some weirdness with the audio quality of the video version on Colin’s end? It sounds like his voice is all echoey and whatnot.

Caleb Greer

This was awesome! One thing I’ll say about the idea of Starkiller Base in Episode VII being dumb is that it has more depth than people give it credit for. The planet it’s on is Ilum, the planet used by Jedi Younglings to gather kyber crystals for their lightsaber construction (as seen in the Clone Wars before Episode VII). It was also one major planet used by the Empire to mine kyber crystals for the Death Stars (hence the giant trench). Lastly, unlike the death stars that destroyed like 2 cities, a couple ships, and 1 planet combined, Starkiller Base destroyed the entire Hosnian system (like 6 planets?) that housed the entire government of the New Republic. It actually succeeded in wiping out the government.

I did notice some weird audio doubling on Colin's audio on the Youtube version, but I haven't checked the MP3 version.

I love the creative ideas here and would enjoy other "what if" episodes. It also makes me sad about the confused/uninspired corporate mess that Disney has given us.

LastStandMedia

Yeah. We had an audio issue with Dagan's video and needed to combine the tracks. This should be a problem with the MP3.

LastStandMedia

I mean, it's a cool idea... it's just very much the same thing. Connecting the planet that was heavily mined for the Death Stars is super cool, but do something else with that instead of making it its own weapon.

Travis B

Its good to see that the vaunted “noodle arms” run in the family. Love you guys.

Blake Wall

Dagen should have kept the mini Emperor on the mic and not said anything to see if Colin would notice

Zachary Smith

Greetings D&C, not sure if the follow on episodes are recorded already, but if not consider doing each of your movies completely rather than jumping between Colin and Dagan. Jumping back and forth was somewhat hard to follow being unfamiliar with the stories and characters.

NeO JD

Really like your force religion idea Col. Although everybody having the force sounds kinda nuts 😄 Love Dag’s Grey idea also, and overall I think his vision for his characters makes me prefer his story so far. My only issue with this ep is I wished you guys had done the whole bit one at a time, instead of back and forth so it’d be easier to follow along. Looking forward to the other parts though.
