Who doesn't love ranking things? Your favorite and least favorite, the best and worst, the top and bottom. On this two-part episode of Sacred Symbols+ (which we only realized was a two-parter about halfway through, around the same time we realized we didn't need to do this every few months), we try to order PlayStation's 18 fully-owned teams in some sort of quantitative fashion. That's virtually impossible, of course, as we're talking about art created by artists, but nonetheless -- with some sort of firm criteria in tow and the best intentions in our heart of hearts -- we do our best to make sense of the immense potential within PlayStation Studios. (This episode is dedicated to selections 18 through 11. The Top 10 is coming soon!)

I’m going to predict the top three results here. 3. Santa Monica 2. Naughty Dog 1. Insomniac I feel like Colin would rank ND number one, but Insomniac was such a steal for Sony and they make fire games that make $$$. Definitely Insomniac’s spot. I can’t begin to guess for Dustin and Chris, other than guessing neither of them would put ND at #1 but would concede to it being in the top 3. Santa Monica could end up at #2 🤷‍♂️

I feel like the sheer quantity puts Insomniac at #1. Naughty Dog would be #2 for me. Sony Santa Monica could go up depending on what they do post God of War.

I like these as an excuse to just get a gut check on the various studios. It’s a good jumping off point for good discussions. So I’m all for these. I will say that Colin yelling shut up at Dustin, even if it wasn’t completely serious made me pretty uncomfortable. I thought he made a good point. This calendar year alone outside of Guerilla, ND, and SSM all the studios have been pretty quiet.

Dustin is right on this one, you shut the fuck up Colin!!! I know you want recurring content but this topic only makes sense once a year at most. The only thing that should change rankings is a game release. None of these studios put out a game every year so even yearly I think is too much. Every 2 to 4 years would be ideal because then you would see some output and be able to change the rankings accordingly. Announcements and updates shouldn't change anything because they are glorified promises. My 2 cents oh and apologize to Dustin you dingus!

I have psychotic dreams in the early morning too, I recently upped my dose of antidepressant and the REM rebound basically ruined my life for a week until my body acclimated to the new dose. Sleep stuff is fucked, stay strong and drink water!

I think you guys nailed Sony Bend and I can't help but feel like they are in a weird place. It is almost like Sony forgets to call them down for dinner when it is ready. It feels like a push and pull relationship most of the time and like many other Sony studios on the bottom half of the list they do have a lot of potential to make something universally great. I’m glad others have already pointed out what Dustin himself said. This isn’t needed so frequently. Wasn’t even needed this time. Let the devs put out some games first. That said, I look forward to what you’ll think of next for a recurring episode.

Chris is right on the money with Savage. Colin as a sports fan you have heard people say the best referees are the ones you don't even notice. Best case scenario for Savage is that they drive revenue for Sony on the mobile front, and we never actually hear about them as core playstation fans. Good episode.

I'm with Dustin on this. This should be a once a year exercise at most. MAYBE every 6 months. There just isn't enough change with all the studios to justify it. It's not like these studios have a very high output (excluding Insomniac)

I like to think I’m not a fanboy. I love to represent Sony because I think they make games the industry can’t live without. I fear I may have crossed a line over Days Gone. I am so at odds with people that oppose me on Days Gone, I am actually introspectively questioning myself. I can understand not liking it, but I believe those that say it is not a good game either didn’t play it, they hate Sony, they love Xbox, or some combination of those. Perhaps some people only capitulate on titles that have metacritic scores that render them undeniably great, and take every opportunity to pile on to those that don’t. All I know for certain is that some of the most memorable events in any game happened to me in Days Gone, and the industry would be worse without it.
