Ranking PlayStation's First Party Studios (2022 Edition, Part I) | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 246

Who doesn't love ranking things? Your favorite and least favorite, the best and worst, the top and bottom. On this two-part episode of Sacred Symbols+ (which we only realized was a two-parter about halfway through, around the same time we realized we didn't need to do this every few months), we try to order PlayStation's 18 fully-owned teams in some sort of quantitative fashion. That's virtually impossible, of course, as we're talking about art created by artists, but nonetheless -- with some sort of firm criteria in tow and the best intentions in our heart of hearts -- we do our best to make sense of the immense potential within PlayStation Studios. (This episode is dedicated to selections 18 through 11. The Top 10 is coming soon!)

Mentally prepping myself for the Media Molecule slander before giving this a watch; even though they are arguably Sony’s best studio.

Lmfaoo Colin you just gave Lockmort his Xmas gift when you told Dustin to shut up. 😂

Insomniac has never made a game that I've loved as much as the Last of Us Part 1 but in terms of pure fun and quantity and quality of output they could be my #1 depending on how Spiderman 2 and Wolverine turn out. Love the ranking episodes I hope you do more like it or even some debates ❤️👍

I think doing this quarterly is way too much, as Dustin was saying, not enough happens within that period of time to shake up the lists in a sort of meaningful way. I would even argue the output of the vast majority of their studios isn't enough to justify doing this annually. In my opinion, it would be more interesting to instead do a yearly reflection framed around the Sony studios that actually did something (good or bad), and ranking those studios overall impact, or something like that.

You guys just helped me to finally understand why I'm a night owl. Same exact daily trajectory. Lemme know if you figure out how to crack the code! Soft acid doesn't sound viable.

#DustinWasRight Plus, a ranking of the games released so far by PlayStation Studios in the PS5 generation would be great!

Right. I was the fan that came to chat about dreams. Sucks to hear Colin didn’t like it, feels worse knowing I disappointed him

Quarterly seems like massive overkill imo. Honestly even twice a year sounds like too much but that's just me. Great episode either way. My thoughts on Playstations first party are almost allways right in line with Chris's. I'd really love to see the fun and more quarky studios like Media Molecule be special again. We all know Insomniac is Playstations best studio though.

No. This does not justify recurring episodes throughout the year. And it’s unfortunate you thought the dreams episode we did wasn’t good enough for you. I went out of my way to send the recording my end cuz apparently there was a technical issue. I just wanted to show a different perspective since you literally say the exact same thing about dreams, you really have nothing new or interesting to say about it. Maybe we don’t need to hear from you when it’s something you simply don’t understand or care about Colin.

Sorry dude! Didn't mean to insult you. I just don't think we did a good job of showcasing the game at all, that's my opinion as the owner of the content. So we opted not to publish. Am happy to try again, though.

I understand. Just came off a little weird but it’s cool. Thanks for the offer though!

Loved this! Love anything where you talk about Sony’s studios. When are you going to do an updated assessment of all of the studios and their different projects? Loved when you did that previously. You’re the man, Colin. Continue to love everything you’re doing.

Michael Miller

High Heat Baseball was actually 3DO. Triple Play was EAs baseball game. And The Show used to just be called “MLB”. And EAs basketball game is called NBA Live.

Steve Bitto

I agree with the other commenters on frequency. Doing this annually may even be too much. Most of these studios release something once every five years - some not even that frequent.

Thought the exact same thing after a short gasp 😱 felt a little bad for Dustin. Fodder for Lockmort though for sure 😎
