Fading Ubiquity | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 237

Not too long ago, Ubisoft was one of the most powerful publishing entities in all of video games. Today, it's a beleaguered entity haunted by an absurdly high headcount and a development pipeline ill-suited for modern trends. The result has been an in-progress collapse notable enough to warrant an extensive update from the company itself, alongside a flurry of cancelled projects and ominous adjusted financial expectations in a worsening economy. The long and the short is: Ubisoft has big changes coming, and we're eager to talk about all that's gone wrong, and what may go right in the future. Other news includes rumors of a second party People Can Fly-developed shooter for PS5, the faux story about vertical PS5s breaking, and the embarrassing Limited Run Games fiasco, plus more. We then end this week not as we traditionally do -- with six questions from the audience -- but rather with our Game of the Year awards, the most prestigious and important you can possibly imagine. We also focus-in on a listener who wrote in about his teeth-brushing habits, and... well... we'll leave it for the show. Is the title a Jesus Twins reference?

Evan Cooper

“Thoughts” is another example

You guys should render and release these shows at 0.5x speed so all these 2x bois are forced to listen normally

Luke Silletta

I had an opportunity to go to the invite only Last of Us premiere here in Calgary Alberta. I'm not going to go because its on the 19th... Why isn't it on the 14th? Disappointing.

Greg Dawson

Talking about anglicisation of words, reminds me of my favourite George W Bush quotes. "The problem with the French is, they don't have a word of entrepreneur" 😂

Alexander Dean

Gotham Knights is really good. Not better than City but I prefer it to Asylum

LastStandMedia

60 frames, then maybe. And why would you write that spoiler? Weird move.

Greg Dawson

Wtf. Why would you write that spoiler???

Yalingo

Did anyone actually expect anything different from LRG? Knowing who works there it's completely on brand. Excellent episode again boys, I'm going to have to give chained echo's a go, still getting to the minnerva fight in crisis core though 😅

Alom Mohammed

44:10 Yup.. agreed with Chris. I listen to Sacred Symbols on Monday whilst working at 1.2x speed. You dont miss anything and the timing is still fine. I do listen at 1.5x speed if I am driving though.

Myles kennison

hey colin, your take on what happened too that woman was incredible. It gave me chills. It could not have been said better.

Travis B

Colin you are now full blown grandpa Simpson yells at cloud. 🫡 And I can only speak for myself but my healthcare costs have only gone up while my quality of care has gone way down since obama care. All these fucking conglomerates gobbling up private practices have ruined the industry. We aren’t people, we are just a patient ID. I have zero faith in universal health care system in nation this large, run by these fucktards.

James Anderson

Ok where is the option to submit comments/write ins? I need to talk about the tooth brushing!

Mark Corlson

Skull and Bones is a good game if you want to be constantly nagged to feed your crewmates.

re: weddings. when we got married in 2007, i was like what, 23? she was 22. i worked at a fast food restaurant, she worked part time at a clothing store. the wedding food was: finger sandwiches. and cake. and punch. our total cost for the entire wedding, clothing, venues, food, and rings included, was under $1000. now *that's* how you get married. now as an aside, i've been to a handful of weddings. not many. but a few. and i've never been to one that had a full blown "meal." ever. ever. i've been to weddings that have snacks. that have cake. that have finger sandwiches. never one with a legitimate actual meal. i've also never *ever* been to a wedding where any sort of alcoholic beverages were available or consumed at the reception. ever. so i think colin may be a little off base in putting that forward as the expectation. btw, we're still married. and not as broke. so that's good. 😁

Keith Huntington

actually, i must correct myself. i went to one... *one* wedding where there was a meal. this was in 2002. they were both 18 years old. the meal was renaissance themed so it was a full on boar with an apple in its mouth. i don't remember the sides. but i do remember the pulled pork was pretty amazing. they annulled their marriage when they came back from honeymoon. literally like their marriage lasted shorter than. a month. moral: meals at weddings = doom for marriage.

LastStandMedia

Well, to each their own. I'm not about to invite people from all over the country to Virginia and give them finger food. That's just me. It's really not a judgment; I'm just not doing it.

Jared Hines

Great episode! Really interesting bit about Limited Run Games and the Hogwarts Legacy debacle happening. I come at this completely objective, but I would love to hear a full conversation about the public discourse surrounding this game. I respect everyone's opinion and really want to hear if buying this game directly supports JK or makes the buyer transphobic. Gaming outlets have even suggested to people not to buy the game or refuse to review it. Even our friend David Jaffe (who has personal experience in the matter) has even stated that "I don't like her views on trans folks and I don't want her shit in my home." Again, I would really like to listen to a constructive conversation regarding the game, its links to the IP holder, and how buying it correlates to transphobic ideologies. Thank you for all that you do! Whether this conversation makes it in or not, I appreciate you taking the time to read every comment! :)

Stonehorn

It doesn’t. It’s a massive overreaction by a group of extremely unstable people.
