Popping in to say that my school in the US has the exact same 4 units of "practical skills" as Taha's. We called them Technology Education (Tech Ed) and Family & Consumer Science (FACS) and had them for a semester each in 7th & 8th grade.

The reason that schools in the US do not have those courses is because academics are focused on STEM education.

Wanna chime in too about practical skills courses. I was in high school in Montreal, Canada, around 1992-1997 (yeah, I am the outlier in your demographics). I had almost the same as Taha's, i.e. one course where you would cook, sew and make a family budget ("économie familiale"), and one where you would do woodworking and basic electronics soldering ("initiation à la technologie").
