Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the San Francisco psychedelic rock scene of '66-'70 is a trip worth taking and exploring in context...

To answer your question about mono, monaural recordings (and AM radio) were all we had when we first heard the Airplane, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, etc. it wasn't that you only heard "one side" but all the music came out of the speaker combined with no right/left channel separation. Stereophonic recording existed, but like FM stereo radio and color TV was on the cutting edge, expensive, and with limited material until the late 60's, and timed perfectly with the mind expansion and color saturation of the era. We didn't feel we were missing anything in the mono/black & white days, because not only was there nothing to compare it to but the music was so exciting we could have been listening through string and tin cans and we still would have been thrilled by it...

Jefferson Airplane vs. Jefferson Starship is a little like progressive vs. commercial Genesis, but only the way Starship ended up. It was first formed by two of the founding members (and S.F. Rock power couple) Grace Slick and Paul Kantner, and their heavy psychedelic/political roots took on a sci fi element with Blows Against The Empire, which has some AMAZING guest musicians. It wasn't until a few albums later with Red Octopus that they went totally commercial and no longer counterculture (which lost early fans like me)...BTW, if Lex likes the 60's Flower Power vibe of "How Do You Feel" she needs to dive deep into Mamas & The Papas...Among the BEST harmonic blend and vibes of 60's rock, hands down...

I notice Lex has her flower power earrings and necklace on, getting into the time, Love it

I'm sorry that Nick wasn't feeling well, I used to get Migraines and they are debilitating so I know Nick's pain, I hope Nick feels better soon and I'm praying he feels better soon.

Scott Anderson

Hey Nick, I hope you’re feeling better soon. Sorry to hear that you are feeling poorly. So great to see you guys reacting to this with quintessential moment in rock ‘n’ roll history. Lex maybe you can get yourself a Jack Cassidy base semi hollow body style he was famous for playing. I’m halfway through the reaction Nick just checked out. Hope he’s better soon. Feeling 10 feet tall. Watch out for those pills that mom give you. They are useless.

A very trippy album, definitely not one to listen to when you have a headache. Feel better Nick! Maybe a take a break from reactions for a while (says the guy who just requested more New Wave music). We’re lucky that Grace Slick is still with us at age 86. Especially with her addiction history and near fatal car crash a few years after this album came out. You would find this album cover and especially her picture on many a dorm room wall in the sixties and seventies.

I had a crush on Grace Slick when I was 9 and I saw them do their songs on TV - it was the golden age of psychedelic times Jimi and Cream and Airplane and Doors etc Strawberry Alarm Clock and lots of cool bands-

Nick I am praying for you sorry you are in a bad way my brother

JK

My tiny transistor radio was about as good as a tin can.

Tony Grinney

Me too! Not just at age 9 it continued for a long time! Especially the video from Woodstock.

I saw Jefferson Starship in 1978 at Knebworth sadly without Grace Slick as she had a throat infection. Genesis were the main band but there were a lot of good bands including Tom Petty and Brand X.

Was "Somebody to love" also in "Good Morning Vietnam"? Embrionic journey was the closing sequence from the very last episode of "Friends" great guitar playing by Jorma. Strange that I'm such a big "Airplane" fan but I have never heard this album in full having said that I know every song from this album. I have 5 CD compilation set of Jefferson Airplane and so all but two of these songs are on it. This was the psychedelic era and so songs were trippy but still short within the 3 minute pop song. Long songs came with prog, Thank you for playing the album I really enjoyed it. Hope you feel well soon Nick.

Jefferson Airplane became Jefferson Starship in the early 1970s and had some hits. Then, in the 80s , became Starship and had some hits.
