The creative core of APP was Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson, a songwriter, composer and pianist. They met in the canteen at Abbey Road and they co-wrote most of the material. They had a core of musicians an brought in guest vocalists for specific tracks (many of the 'gentle' vocals are Eric Woolfson). After they fell out, the output was released under just Alan Parsons, but the quality of the material remained exceptional. So glad you're enjoying all this music from my era (I was 16 years old in 1969) and grew up a mile from Charterhouse School, watching our local band, Genesis, from their first days.

Thank you for reacting to this great album by one of my favorite bands of all time. I grew up on Pink Floyd and APP and have listened to every album many times. Eye in the Sky is one of many great albums by APP. My favorite one is The Turn of a Friendly Card, released in 1980. Though, all of their previous albums from the 70s are excellent.

Phillip Bates

I love APP. And this album is great. My favourite album from them is Turn of a Friendly Card, but they have so many great albums, that usually have a story/theme. My first expose to them was Tales of Mystery and Imagination, their debut album, which is amazing. I Robot, which followed that, was also great, as was Pyramid. Check all of those out.

Dontbe Long

Excellent album to listen to....I always felt Children of the Moon was very Beatles like...Pink Floyd too...the entire album is fantastic

Colin

What a lovely surprise. It doesn't get much better than this."Old And Wise" one of my all time favourite track's sung by Colin Blunstone one of my all time favourite singers. You certainly know how to spoil us.❤️

Murdock Moriarty

What a freaky friday you've got ahead of you. And what treat you're getting back to APP. Now, I honestly will say this isn't my favourite of theirs, though you can hardly find any fault with this album. And, i'd argue it's their last real "classic release".

Greybeard Music Man

Absolutely the best album in my honest opinion! Thanks Nick and Alexia. This was certainly a treat! Hope your recovery is complete Alexia. You're looking very well. Love and respect to you all!

Great reaction so far -- will comment as things crop up. So yes, it is Sir-i-us (ser-ee-us), I believe it's known as the "Dog Star" -- the brightest star in the night sky. Eye in the Sky is somewhat of a commentary about spy satellites and drones watching over / stalking all of us. Is the dystopian future already here? I guess, yes, you have caught on to that general theme of the album. I always like all of the APP Instrumentals -- this album, I Robot, various other albums. EitS, O&W and Psychobabble were hot here -- I loved the bass vocal on it during the refrain (as I can sing that low). I've been listening to APP for years, probably starting with I Robot (as it was sort of based on the Issac Asimov story/series of the same name). Great listen. thanks.

Hi guys, what a lovely colour-coded reaction! I only know bits and bobs of Alan Parsons' catalogue, but I did enjoy listening to this album very much. You know, I've never really heard that much of a musical connection between this band and Pink Floyd. We all hear things differently of course, and Alan was the Floyd's engineer, but his music feels to me a little more like... Supertramp maybe? Anyway, it's a fine album with great music. What I love about music is the connection between musicians from one band/album to another band or album. There are some great connections here. As Colin commented above, 'Old and Wise' was sung by Colin Blunstone who was the vocalist in The Zombies, a great British band from the 60's, whose keyboard player was Rod Argent, and you've done an Argent marathon haven't you Nick? The core of the Project band was Ian Bairnson on guitar, David Paton on bass, and Stuart Elliott on drums. These are all heroes of mine as they played together on Kate Bush's first couple of albums. In fact, Stuart would remain Kate's drummer of choice all the way until her comeback album 'Aerial' in 2005. Ian, David and Stuart first played together in the mid 70's in a band called Pilot and had a pop hit with a song called 'Magic'. I just love that there's always an interesting connection somewhere! Thanks for this reaction NicknLex, as I've said before, it's so good to have you back. Lots of love Richard xx

Great album choice...I really hope you enjoy the show. I bought this album as a blu-ray audio version and sounds spectacular in that format. Thanks for this gift to us. Since you mentioned King Crimson (and you know by now I always hone in on them when mentioned), please listen on your own to their 'Lark's Tongues in Aspic' album. I know it will blow you away. Maybe you can just do an album summary, or something, without playing any actual music just to give us your perspective on it. Just a thought...

Ahhhhhh…APP. so glad you guys finally reacted to more Alan Parsons, as you know I’ve been pushing for them for a while. My #2 listening choice right behind Steely Dan. You will definitely enjoy them in concert. I’ve seen them a number of times over the years since they started touring. I remember back when APP would release a new album and it wouldn’t leave my turntable for weeks and I’d drop the needle upon coming home from work. Most of the albums are concept albums and are best listened to in their entirety but I know that’s tough to do for you. APP has some of the best instrumentals which are always the standout on the albums. They even released an album of all the instrumentals, (which are actually great to use as theme music for photo slideshows). Like you said about this album, there’s really not a bad song on ANY of their albums, and a few of the other albums are actually better than this one. (My fav being “Turn of a Friendly Card”. You’ll also enjoy learning the lineage of musicians that work throughout the albums (Ian Bairnson’s guitar solos) and the people Alan has worked with ( Beatles, Floyd, Al Stewart-Year of the Cat, Ambrosia, to name a few). Thanks again as it was a joy to hear this again, in it’s entirety, with headphones. Enjoy the rabbit hole that is “Alan Parsons”…❤️

Great choice and reaction, as always, and great to see you back! You will absolutely love the show. AP always has top-notch musicians on his albums and the same with the live shows. For those of us sports fans here in the US that are old enough to remember...and I definitely am...Sirius was used as the intro for the great Chicago Bulls teams in the 80's and early 90's w/Michael Jordan. Seeing APP live will always be a special memory for me...I saw them with my wife in early 2019. Her health had started to decline and I lost her in 2020...that was really the last time we were able to go out and really enjoy an evening of music, so hearing this again brought back good memories. Always enjoy your reactions and keep up the great work!

Nick and Lex, do you hear why us oldsters say that modern music is crap? I'm 58. Graduated from high school the year this came out. Listened to it a ton. I had forgotten how awesome this stuff is, especially Silence and I. While listening, I'm getting chills and shedding tears. So fun to experience this with you!

Patrick Nicolucci

Hey Guys, the genius of Alan parsons is 2 fold. One he is a recording master, 2nd his music is very layered. he starts with one instrument then layers another then another. He is amazing . enjoy! there so much more music you haven't heard yet from the Alan Parsons my favorite song on this album is Old and Wise.

Mka

I love Alan Parson' Project. I've listened to this album many time but I had not in long while. Having listened to it again I realized what a great track Old and Wise is. You should listen to The Turn of a Friendly Card. It is perfect.

Mark Grasnick

Me, not so much Beatles but more Supertramp. Listen to the harmonies, very reminiscent of Breakfast in America.

Mark Grasnick

Definitely Supertramp, more than anyone else..

Gary Arnett

Old and Wise vocalist is Zombie Colin Blunstone. This is likely APP's best album, still in my top 10 after all these years. Every song perfection.

Debra Brabenec

I really enjoyed this album, and, as Richard said so well, I only knew "bits and bobs" of APPs catalogue. It was fun to see Marley zooming, he's such a doll! Have a great time at the concert! 🎵❤️🎵

Hey Nick, That Pink Floyd song that you were talking about was called "Young Lust" from The Wall 1979 and MTV went on the air on 8/1/81, Lex!! And as for this album, They did released at least one or two more tracks as singles and or for active rock radio besides the title track and there are 3 songs on side 2 and this is another APP masterwork and have fun for me and I'm sending you both love & prayers!! Can't wait to hear from you soon!! - <3 <3

ProgRockFan

Agree. My favorite on side 2 is O&W

Hi guys, I finally got around to listening to this in full. I bought this album on vinyl when it first came out. I haven't played it in a few years, and it is so good to not only hear it again, but to have it shared like this with you is sooo good. I have all his albums. You have one heck of a journey filled with many surprises. I find his albums are like movie soundtracks. They invoke so many images as its stirs up the imagination. Top notch production values ...of course ...and each Project is different with different musicians & vocalists, some of whom do return on other albums as you will discover. Just wait till you get to the album "A Valid Path" ... a BIG surprise on that ! ...[ More than one ...if you have heard the debut album Mystery & Imagination ] I really enjoyed this with you both. Thankyou ! .... Wishing you Lex a full and speedy recovery. You & Nick mean the world to me. Byeee -Your friend from England. Jim X

Thanks for the reaction - it’s a better album than I remember! I still think that Tales, I Robot, Pyramid, Eve and Turn of a Friendly Card are better. I dismissed this one years ago after hearing it, so I’m glad I tuned in, now I’m going to have to go buy it!

Loved the Reaction!! Would love to see more of.your reactions on APP. So some tidbits from each song of the album. Sirius: It's the brightest star we can see in the sky woth the naked eye. This is probably the most played APP song, but many people don't know it's APP, they know it from Michael Jordan and the 90's Chicago Bulls. Eye In The Sky: it can mean many things, but Eric Woolfson got the insporation from the cameras in the casinos ceilings (if youhear the lyrics with that in mind, they make total sense). Children of the Moon: not sure what this one is really about but it is political commentary; it is sung by long-time APP bass player, David Paton, who was better known for forming and fronting the band Pilot with their hit single "(Oh, Oh, Oh, It's) Magic". Gemini: I always saw it as Castor talking to Polux (the two main stars from the Gemini constellation), but I could.be way off; sung by the musical genius Chris Rainbow (R.I.P). Silence and I: the burden of keeping secrets... probably my favorite APP track all-time, featuring a 95-piece orchestra playing at the time; kudos to Andrew Powell, who would make all the orchestral arrangements for APP. Fingers Burned: sung by APP regular Lenny Zakatek; the song was recorded in the key of E, but the tape was run at a lower speed to give the instruments thet "reverby" sound. Psychobabble: I believe this was the first song to be recorded for this album; gotta love that bass!! Mammagamma: a song played almost in its entirety by a computer with some bass, guitars and strings added later. Step By Step: one of my favorites! Gotta love that bassline too! The guitar solo was recorded plugging Ian Bairnson's guitar straight to the console and the "jungle" noises at the beginning are all made by Lenny Zakatek - no synthesizer involved. Old and Wise: this song is like an anthem in the Netherlands; although many people think this is a sad song, Eric Woolfson thought of it as having an optimistic message - masterfully sung by Colin Blunstone, who you might recognize from The Zombies.

I've watched several of your videos on YouTube and finally joined here after you posted this full album reaction. Thanks for sharing. I was 9 or 10 when this album was out and making waves, and my Dad played this album A LOT. I like the big popular tracks of Turn of a Friendly Card and a few other singles, but as a complete APP album I'm really only familiar with this one. It's so good. I hope you enjoyed the concert -- assuming they didn't have a full orchestra, there are YouTube videos of a concert the current APP lineup did in Colombia a few years back with a full orchestra, and they did "Silence and I" and "Old and Wise" -- highly recommended. ... My first concerts were about 2 weeks apart in 1988: Moody Blues and Pink Floyd (Momentary Lapse of Reason tour), so you guys are right up my alley. Look forward to watching more here!

Great reaction, I've listened to this album for so long I can't remember, it's like it's always been in my life. Silence and I is one of my favorite songs ever, and Old and Wise, Alan is such a master of melody and harmonies, he comes up with layers of beautiful melodies to build something epic. I'm so glad you two got to listen to the album before the concert last night, it amplifies the appreciation when seeing it live, and the concert was fantastic, great sound, great setlist (although a bit short). It was great to meet you in person, and hopefully we get to do something again soon.
