As a HUGE Bowie fan, this album is incredibly precious to me. My older brother had bought it just as I entered high school and with all his music he shared it with me and my younger brothers. Several years later he convinced our mom to allow me to go to Boston for my first concert, which was Bowie. The night was surreal. I was in full Ziggy Stardust garb with my spiked hair, platform shoes and glitter socks. The night ended with Rock n’ Roll Suicide, the stage spotlights variously colored, dancing over the crowd. Fifty years later, that memory remains vivid, and I’m forever indebted to my big brother. Watching you react was so much fun. Thank you for the listen. I love the parallels you made to other songs and artists, and helped me to think about this in some brand new ways. Although Lady Stardust may be the least musically interesting it is historically quite important in my opinion. This was the first time I’d ever encountered an artist openly embracing and empathizing with a Transgender person. At a time when the stigma laid heavy on people who didn’t conform to the norm, this taught us that different was okay, and helped us to better understand the world.

We who bought the album when it was released know that on it it says to be played a full volume and a truer statement there never was! It was our intro to what would become known as Glam Rock and I first heard it when my brother brought it back from college, had to go get my own copy and you’d hear it being played at full volume in dorms! Very much a concept album and the story is as important as the music, needs to be heard without stopping and reading the lyrics while listening. Trust me, this launched Bowie to the top of the pile and you’d never have heard his 80’s stuff if Ziggy was never recorded… by the way “Lady Stardust” is anything but a bad track and very important to the narrative.

Nick an Lex welcome to the fantastic world of Glam Rock, where there are some fantastic and exciting discoverys to be made. I still cannot believe that i saw this tour in my local Town Hall back in 72. This is such an incredible album I remember buying this when it first came out and just kept playing it over and over again.Ziggy Stardust was David Bowie's alter ego and his backing band were at that time the Spiders from Mars.

B Mac

Rick Wakeman is on this as a session artist. He was invited to join the Spiders from Mars but declined in order to join Yes.

JK

I can never hear Ziggy Stardust without expecting the 1, 2 punch into Suffragette City. It was that way on his first greatest hits album, called Changes One. That was my first Bowie album - I was a little late to the party. Thank you both for this!

Always great to hear David Bowie. An unrepeatable human and visionary artist. Such a great variety of soundscapes and vibrant narratives, it’s always time travel when I hear these songs. So much adventurous music and musical ideas in the early 70’s. Love the drama and operatic rock opera ideas.

Yay! I truly miss both of you together on a regular basis and hope we see a lot more of it! How is Lexi's back doing? Are requests for the 2 of you together ever coming back? Any chance of another live chat, maybe an overdue celebration of 50K subscribers?

NicknLex

Hi Gary! Request of us together are definitely coming back next year. For now Nick has been covering for me and gas even gained a little bit of a following on his own. I am seeing a doctor twice a week for my back. Full albums and full movies will always be us two for sure. I can't wait to be back doing regular and marathons with Nick. We will do a live soon Gary.

Great album, but I always wondered why it's held in as high regard as it is. There was a months-long contest on Facebook with thousands of people participating to choose the best album of the 1970's, and this album won. I mean, yes, again great album, but far from my favorite of the 70's. It's not even Bowie's best album (that honor goes to Hunky Dory from the previous year), and there are 3 or 4 albums of his at least I'd rate higher. The best songs are classics, the lesser songs are also great, but it's not the best ever, and the concept is a lot more loose than most people think it is. Still, can't go wrong with 1970's Bowie!

Hi guys, I really enjoyed this. My memory is seeing Bowie doing Starman on tv and putting his arm around Mick Ronson during the chorus. In the 70's just think about that moment. I remember everyone wanting this album. It was better than the way Designer Clothes are looked upon today. It defined you. I remember my 1st day at Art College walking into the Students Union to get a coffee and seeing a guy with orange hair exactly like Ziggy Stardust character that Bowie took upon. He looked amazing. David Bowie's best friend was Marc Bolan and I was heavily into T.Rex. There is so much similarities between Bolan & Bowie with their early albums. They must have given each other so many ideas. You would absolutely love the album "Electric Warrior" by T.Rex.....as for another Bowie album .... "Hunky Dory" is a masterpiece ! You will be blown away. This was sooo good. Thankyou ! .... Oh, and if you see this in time .... A Very Happy New Year to you both ! Byeee Jim X

Not even one of his best albums

B Mac

Wakeman is on this by the way.

It's my favorite album of his. The only track I don't think is really good is the one cover, "It's Not Easy". I love the band he had at the time, and I think his songwriting, the arrangements and production are all stellar. I feel like you two would really enjoy Station To Station.

"Starman" is also in the movies The Martian and Glass Onion, and on the series The Crown and 1899 . You already caught it. I was going to say, a fun thing to do is listen to "Hang Onto Yourself" then listen to "I Don't Wanna Go Down To the Basement" by The Ramones. Definitely some 'influence' there.

Great Reaction - This is the BIG Ziggy Album. I feel the songs come to life more when he played them live. Check out the 2022 Bowie movie Moonage Daydream its not a Biopic - but more a immersive experience. Saw it in Theatres. It would be cool to do a Video Reaction of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Concert Film The last concert he ever did as Ziggy

Kristine Doggett

Great reaction guys! One of my faves. It'd be cool to see you guys do some Alice Cooper. The album 'Love It To Death' (1971) by the original Alice Cooper band is a good place to start. If you liked the elements of punk in Bowie's music or his edgier sound you'll love seventies era Alice Cooper.
