Happy Monday!

YOU VOTED, WE LISTENED! Thank you to our dear Dan member: Paul Z. for this wonderful recommendation that made it to the poll and WON!

We had previously listened to Side One on YouTube, so here is the link for that if you wish to see our FIRST reaction to that side. Side Two was totally new to us... or was it!?

Nick and Alexia, I could talk all day about The Moody Blues. Firstly, no, The Beatles never recorded an album as orchestral as this. Individual tracks like 'A Day In The Life' and 'Eleanor Rigby' but not on this scale. I first heard this album in 1968, when I was 15 years old. Although I h

had heard 'Nights..' on the radio my proper introduction to the Moodies was their next album In Search Of The Lost Chord. I was hooked immediately and soon bought Days Of Future Passed. I agree Nick, the songs do sound very much of their time. Bear in mind though, that the orchestra does not play on any of the band's songs (apart from the final epic climax to 'Nights') and the strings are in fact Mike Pinder's mellotron. Aside from The Beatles, this band was my gateway also into rock and progressive rock. I idolised them and each album release was a major event for me. Each member wrote songs, each one could sing, they played tons of different instruments and the mellotron created soundscapes that no other band created at that time. I thought they were so cool!

Nick & Lex...wonderful reaction. Not sure if I have mentioned this to you, but... You can think of Days of Future Passed as a day in the life - or you can consider it to be the Life of a human being. Morning mentions childhood. Peak Hour is the frantic years of the 20's and thirties. Tuesday Afternoon is the 50's and the slowing down of life's activities. Then, last, but not least Night's in White Satin. Did you know that coffins are lined with white satin?? As always, Love you both, Ken

This was so fun to listen to this with you two! I had never thought about parts of this sounding like The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but now that you mention it, I can totally hear it! Cool thought. I first heard this in about 1978 when I was 14, but it didn't grab me quite as much as their other early albums which I also first heard around that same time. Their next SIX albums are awesome just like this one. I like them a little bit more than this but this one has slowly risen over my life to where I like it pretty much just as much as the others. Those next six have a little less orchestral material in them and a little more stuff like Peak Hour, Tuesday Afternoon, and Twilight Time. There's so much material there for you to digest! Six...count 'em...SIX full albums like this one without a single weak song. I want you two to gobble them up! Although I would love to listen to them here with you. So fun. I love your taste in music!
