FULL ALBUM: The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

Yeah, this is a soundtrack album to a film they created, which is why there was an instrumental piece. It’s such an amazing album. They were really experimenting with recording tricks and techniques here but the songwriting is always good, as are their vocals and playing. So many good songs here. I loved your rendition of All You Need is Love from Moulin Rouge. Such a great movie! And soundtrack. And Ewan does such a great job singing all those classics. I’m glad you both enjoyed it. Can’t wait for the next one from them.

Iconic album, but aren’t they all? John wrote I Am The Walrus to confound critics whom he felt were reading too much into his lyrics. So it was intended as a ruse, but became an enormous hit. Personal note: I was walking in Greenwich Village with a friend when a car drove by and the driver told us John Lennon had been shot and killed. We walked all the way up Manhattan to The Dakota, and stood with the crowd that had gathered in Central Park across the road. That area in the park is now designated as Strawberry Field.

I was only 11 years old when I heard Magical Mystery Tour. Here in England, the album did not exist. It was a hard backed book filled with pages of stills from the movie and 2 EP's containing 2songs each side. My sister had it, as she had all their singles and my older sister had more Beatles EP's. It was much later I saw in a music paper the album existed only in America, so I order the vinyl import and was probably the only person in England to own a copy...Well it certainly felt that way because when I told people there is an album, noone believed me. The 2 EP book set was too famous for an album to also exist....Within 6 months of me owning my copy it was in England in stores. Then other American Beatles albums appeared like "Help ! The Original soundtrack" which is quite different from the English album "Help" and the same with "A Hard Days Night Soundtrack" I was lucky enough to discover and get imports of these albums on vinyl during the 70's... On Magical Mystery Tour the track "Blue Jay Way" is all George Harrison not Lennon. I know , even I get confused who's singing sometimes. It explains why their harmonizing was so amazing. The movie is a very strange one but worth a look. In it during the song "I am the Walrus" each Beatle wore a different mask. Noone knew who was who behind the mask, but it was believed the Walrus was John .. for obvious reasons ! ... but it wasn't !! Listen to the song "Glass Onion" from "The White Album" ... and the lyrics ... "So here's a clue for you all .. The Walrus was Paul " Good eh ? Lol Great reaction. Loved every minute, thankyou !! I agree with you Nick that Penny Lane is the best song on the album, with All You Need is Love and Fool on the Hill as a close second and third. And while I grew up favouring Paul, it's hard for me to choose now as I love both of their voices and songs.

Wow, Jim, I never knew about the EPs and the books, or that we 'mericans had the albums before you all did!

Debra Brabenec

I just started listening, and I will comment more later, but I so wish the music could be louder. I would rather have to turn it down than not be able to turn it up.

I was almost 11 when this came out. We didn't have it, but my cousin Susie had at least 3 copies and she gave me the most beat up one, which was without the booklet in the middle of the gateway jacket. That was John singing lead on the title cut, and Paul, of course, on his lovely "The Fool On The Hill." It was George that wrote and sang the trippy "Blue Jay Way", which is an actual street in LA where he waited for friends on a foggy night! "Your Mother Should Know" is a McCartney song, probably influenced by the dance hall songs his father played. The spoken words you hear in "I Am The Walrus" were from a BBC production of King Lear. When I first got an answering machine in the late '80s, I used to love to be creative with my outgoing message. One time I played "Hello Goodbye" simultaneously at 2 different speeds! During the "Paul is dead" debacle, it was thought that John said "I bury Paul" at the end of "Strawberry Fields Forever", but it turns out it was "cranberry sauce!" That was a piccolo trumpet adorning Paul's wonderful "Penny Lane" and I was so glad the Spotify version did NOT have the little trumpet coda at the end that some versions have- it always seemed trite to me. I adore "Baby, You're A Rich Man", both lyrically and harmonically. "You keep all your money in a big brown bag inside a zoo! What a thing to do!" I remember watching the worldwide satellite broadcast of "All You Need Is Love" on The Mike Douglas Show. It was in June of 1967, and the song wasn't released until July. I remember marveling at how John sang with gum in his mouth! This was SUCH a treat to watch you two react to! If it is possible to raise the volume of the music and lower your mics a bit, that would be great! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie

Another interesting item from the film is that The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah band, with Neil Innes, who was a frequent collaborator of the Monty Python troupe, sang a song called "Death Cab For Cutie." Thus, a future band name was born!

Debra Brabenec

I love that idea! Wish it could happen, especially now.😥

i was 9 when my cousins got this album and I loved it as my favorite song at the time was All You Need Is Love- Magical mystery Tour was a cool track and Strawberry Fields/ Penny Lane I had the single and I also had the Hello Goodbye/I am the Walrus single as a kid got it for Christmas from cool parents

Stephen Caruso

Blue Jay Way was George Harrison and he was into Sitar and Ravi Shankar

I have to admit, when I first saw that you had reacted to Magical Mystery Tour my heart sank. But then it dawned on me that you would probably be playing the US album version which has five famous singles added to the original double EP released in the UK. 'Strawberry Fields Forever' was a double A side single with 'Penny Lane', 'Hello Goodbye' was a single that had MMT's 'I Am A Walrus' as its B side, and 'All You Need is Love' had 'Baby You're A Rich Man' as its B side. So this was never intended to be an album, but their US label Capitol reckoned this would be a much better seller and of course they were right. It's a much better listen too!

The original Magical Mystery Tour concept was as a TV movie, and it was shown on BBC TV on Boxing Day 1967. I was 14 then, and my (and the whole country's) Christmas was centred around the new Beatles movie. It was such an event! The double EP had been released on 8th. December so I had heard the music already but the fact that we would see them on screen was very exciting as by then live performances from The Beatles were already a thing from the past. In all honesty it was a bit of a let down at the time and the UK press gave them a big thumbs down! It was the first time The Beatles had made a critical mis-step and it surprised them somewhat. Musically I think that 'I Am The Walrus' is one of THE great rock songs, and the title track, 'Fool On The Hill' and 'Your Mother Should Know' are top Beatles songs of that period, but George Harrison's 'Blue Jay Way' and 'Flying' (credited to the whole band) fall way short to my ears. The jewel of my music collection is a 13 LP boxset of every original Beatles album (i.e. UK versions) and this is not there, so it was so good to listen along with you Nick and Alexia. I worshipped these guys, so any full album Beatles reaction is fine by me. If you want to hear all the great songs, you have to play all their albums! By the way, this US version was eventually released in the UK in the mid seventies.

Love The Beatles, thank you for doing this. That part you were trying to figure out at the end of All You Need is Love was In the Mood by Glenn Miller :)

Richard Dobson

The gum thing also stuck with me too Debra! How could he do that? My mother always said it was bad manners!

Debra Brabenec

I've read that he often chewed gum because his mouth was dry when he sang.

Michele

Yes. Thanks. Great swing track. 😽

Michele

Speaking of gum … does anyone remember the Beatles gum and trading cards ? I collected quite a few. Lol 😝

Michele

Thanks. Great reaction. Of course, I loved it! 😽💕

Michael Gray

This is one of my favorite albums of all time along with Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band. Simply awesome.

You guys should try diving into some George Harrison music, both with the Beatles and solo. He's an amazing talent who was over shadowed by two musical geniuses, but he was a force to be reckoned with in his own right.

Great Scott

theoretically the tv movie is available someplace for viewing. Kind of a bunch of music videos collected together with a story behind it. I did somehow see the movie once, they got a film copy and showed in in my HS auditorium once years later, I was disappointed it was so short, at around an hour. But it was cute. (Although I kind of like the Yellow Submarine movie better for the Peter Max art and better song videos.)

Blue Jay Way is George, not John.
