So... the poll was pretty much determined from the moment it was posted! 😂 We FINALLY got to this much-requested album. OH BOY!

Happy Thanksgiving to all! And a special thanks to whomever suggested this album! Now I will watch it.

Rick B

The Lyrics for Lucy give me shivers (in a good way) and I don't know why

Alden21

Really enjoyed this reaction, such an iconic album. It never gets old. The only criticism I have is that the volume is so low, it really takes away from the experience. Great one though, thanks a lot for doing this.

Great Scott

so I believe it is mostly a concept album, being that it's not The Beatles performing this album, it's the band "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" that is performing. However, the very last song "A Day in the Life" *is* by the Beatles, for contrast. Still a great album. There's a lot of background in Wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sgt._Pepper%27s_Lonely_Hearts_Club_Band

Dom Citrullo

Ringo sang lead on With a Little Help from My Friends.

Rick B

I believe George Martin was responsible for all the string orchestrations (being an old-school producer in the '60s)

Dom Citrullo

On She's Leaving Home, it was about the daughter leaving home. Worth a read of the lyrics, then you'll get it.

Rick B

.... One more thing then I'll shut up!... The album cover was filled with famous people that they admired or who had some influence on their lives. I was too young when this was released but my parents had the album and I remember looking to see if I knew any of these famous people.

Dom Citrullo

The album cover contains pictures of some of the people the individual Beatles liked or admired.

JK

Great reaction, and so much fun to hear it fresh through your ears. They generously gave With a Little Help From My Friends to Ringo to sing, and that was the right choice. He suddenly became a very important member of the Beatles with this hit song. Nick, John Lennon was speaking against domestic abuse on Getting Better - an important issue for him. And Lex, the story about your aunt sounds just like the daughter running away from her parents in She’s Leaving Home. Next Beatles choice needs to be Abbey Road!

Scott Anderson

Happy Thanksgiving I can’t wait to watch these two react to this landmark album.

Phillip Bates

This album marks the first time that Paul experimented with LSD, as John, George and Ringo had previously done and pressured Paul to try. He gave in during their break after the Revolver tour, and he was inspired by The Beach Boys Pet Sounds and Freak Out! by Mothers of Invention. He really wanted to push the boundaries and do something different. They had decided to stop touring, so this afforded them the opportunity to do things in the studio that they would find difficult to perform live. George got to bring in his Eastern influence, playing the sitar. Everyone member got to sing, as well. It has so many technological breakthoughs in recording and production. It's definitely their magnum opus. Glad you both enjoyed it.

NicknLex

We did this because of you btw!!! ❤️ No one else has mentioned the volume. Maybe it’s on your end??

KevB(rewski)

"and a splendid time is guaranteed for all" Paul sang the Sgt Pepper intro. Ringo sang With a Little Help..., probably his peak vocal as a Beatle. When I finally went to see Ringo and his All Starr Band play live, hearing Ringo sing With a Little Help near the end of the show was spine tingling! Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is them, dressed in those colorful "marching uniforms" as a fictional band. It was a way to "get away from being a Beatle" for awhile, and creating this whole alternative reality. Remember, they decided after the 1966 tours in large outdoor stadiums in front of 50,000 screaming fans, playing on ancient PA systems, that they had enough of touring. They had so many ideas about doing more creative things in the studio, adding more instruments, using strings and horns, with the technical help of George Martin. They knew this music would be harder to recreate live with a simple 4 piece band. They felt like trapped animals in cages with virtually no private lives, and they wanted to be let loose and explore their creative limits. That's what led to Pepper. John sings Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (LSD), which I believe was a legal drug at that time. Paul sings Getting Better, one of my fav tunes from the album just because the way it sounds. You need to keep in mind not to take everything literally. This is a fictional band in a fictional world. Its not autobiographical. The songs on Sgt Pepper are all linked with no long pauses, ie Dark Side of the Moon. This was the revolutionary move of making an album as a thematic concept album which flows as one piece of art, meant to be listened through completely instead of as individual singles, much like a symphony. Fixin a Hole is a fantastic underrated tune, again sung by Paul. Great guitar work by George on Getting Better and Fixin a Hole. She's Leaving Home reflects the reality of the 60s and kids leaving home more in the Flower Power hippy era. The parent's point of view contrasted with the thirst for Independence and freedom. Its a sad touching song because the parents feel like they failed their daughter and can't understand why she wants to leave. Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite is probably my fav tune of all, even over A Day in the Life, simply because it best reflects the swirling colorful "kaleidoscope" as Lex said, of sounds like being in a carnival with all kinds of strange sights and sounds. The magic George Martin did with tapes and edits putting John and Paul's thoughts into music on tape is an amazing story. I just love the whole atmosphere that song creates. To me it defines what Sgt Pepper is all about. Only The Beatles could create an ethereal spiritual Indian song of peace and self exploration by George and follow it with Paul's pop ditty about growing old together and have it make sense. Then I love the way they put 2 silly catchy tunes back to back, Paul's Lovely Rita (and yes, there still are "meter maids" walking around giving parking tickets in downtown cities), and John's Good Morning leading into the Sgt Pepper reprise. Genesis used reprises on many of their albums. That's direct from Sgt Pepper (and classical music). A Day in the Life is a perfect closing track to close out this journey. The insertion of Paul's middle verse contrasts so well with John's dreamy vocals. And yes, you've got to listen to the entire closing piano note! Its hard to even begin to measure the impact of Sgt Pepper on the musical world since 1967 because it was so different and yes, Progressive. The album as a unified piece of art (including the cover of various famous figures in history, society, people they admired etc). No longer would albums be viewed just as a collection of unconnected singles. You can draw a direct line from Sgt Pepper to Dark Side of the Moon, with branches of progressive rock music growing out in all directions from there. There would be no Dark Side without Sgt Pepper. (Who's Next, The Lamb, ELO, Alan Parsons Proj, etc). The advances and creativity in recording technology alone makes it iconic, on top of the great music. Loved that you both finally heard this masterpiece together, because so much of what came after in rock and pop music was affected or influenced by this album. A great piece of musical art!

Richard Dobson

Well that was a joyous experience, listening to a masterpiece with you both. Alexia, you can skip drama school and go straight into the movies! Can I make a couple of comments on some songs.

Richard Dobson

I always end the message too soon. Getting Better - You must give this another listen Nick, as you were a little distracted with drinks, tablets and one line of the lyric! Musically, it is stunning with so many subtle touches, glorious percussion from Ringo, and the anti-wife beating message generally assumed to be written by John (who was from a broken home). Within You Without You - George had been taught sitar by Ravi Shankar in 1966 and plays sitar, acoustic guitar and tambura on the track, along with an assorted number of uncredited Indian musicians from the Asian Music Centre in London, all recorded while sitting on a carpet on the floor of Studio 2, Abbey Road with lights dimmed and incense burning. Oh yes, there were also four violinists, two viola players, two cellists, two double bassists and a harpist. When time travel is perfected, that's where I want to go! I didn't hear this first with my wife guys, because I was three months shy of my 14th. birthday! However she did buy me a box set of every Beatles U.K. released albums on vinyl in stereo for my 30th. birthday. It is still in mint condition. I was also fortunate enough to be in Cape Town with my children in September 2017 and my son woke me up on my 64th. birthday playing 'When I'm sixty four' on the stereo!

KevB(rewski)

Nice details Richard. 64 is getting too close for comfort for me....add>George gave us a great preview of Within You Without You on Revolver with Love You Too, which I now see they already reacted to.

Gary Arnett

#1 Paul, #2, Ringo, #3 Ask Julian, he published a repo of his original picture along with his tribute EP "Lucy". #8, not as surprising as it might appear. George gave us a preview of what he might be doing the previous year with Love you To. And the albums you compared it to.... this was years before either of those. (Edit: Weddings My eldest son and his 14 - 15 year long spouse just did their ceremony also.)

Richard Dobson

I'm sure you'll embrace the feeling Kev!

KevB(rewski)

I tend to agree. Doesn't need to be ear splitting, but a bit louder to capture the punch of bass and drums would be nice. If there is a way to increase the viewer's volume level without affecting your own headphone volume level that might be a solution. Don't know how your setup works.

KevB(rewski)

What about the White Album!? A split session? So many great tunes on that album.

Richard Dobson

I would hope that you react to the ups and downs, the beauty and the bizarre, the pop and the prog, and the rock and the roll of The White Album next. Warning! It's a double album so perhaps two sessions?

KevB(rewski)

Where else can you hear tunes about roller coasters and doing it in the middle of the road. 😉

Debra Brabenec

I have that box set of albums too- a Christmas gift from my mom (requested by me, somewhere in my 30s!)

Debra Brabenec

What fun to see you two react to this iconic album! I could imagine smelling the incense and watching the lava lamps as the music took you far away to groovy land! The sunglasses were perfect, and I cracked up as you both mimed riding a merry-go-round! If I had a pick for the next album, it would be to go back and do Rubber Soul, which was the first album I ever got. I'm partial to the Capital release, as those songs in their particular order are set in my brain and the UK version just sounds weird to me! Eventually, though, you must do The White Album and Abbey Road too! I'm thankful for you two, your wonderful channel and our community of music lovers!🎵❤️🎵🦃🦃

Richard Dobson

It's one of my most prized possessions Debra. We are very fortunate!

Alden21

My thoughts exactly.

Alden21

No, the volume is fine for other videos, it's just this one.

KevB(rewski)

Well, I don't have those super nice vinyl box collections you two have, but I do have The Beatles CD Singles Box, and the Beatles EP Box, both in opened but pristine condition, with the reproduction of each release's original art work on mini LP sleeves. Ridiculous to even bother playing them, (2 and 4 songs on each disc), but just scrolling through the great pics on the covers once in awhile gives me a nice sense of satisfaction.

Stephen Caruso

had this album when I was 9 and in 1967 we were dismayed that there were no hits on the radio from it - we loved it to death .. 1978 Robert Stigwood did a cheesy movie with the BeeGees who got famous for imitating the Beatles and also has Peter Frampton and Aerosmith and Earth Wind and Fire.. you may enjoy the Beatles covers

NicknLex

So odd!! Our volume for your ears always stays the same. What we are able to control is how it comes through for us. Maybe the volume of the album was lower? Sorry about that!!

Alden21

Hey no worries! Like I said, I really enjoyed the reaction. The sound issue seems to be out of your control so it's all good. Cheers!

KevB(rewski)

All the Superstars in the world can't redeem that "musical" imo. It tarnishes the legacy of Sgt Pepper in my view, should have never been done. I'm sure I would feel the same if some big Hollywood studio tried to make a movie of Genesis' Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. There are certain things that just shouldn't be f'd around with by people with no clue.

EW

Not true. Paul first took LSD in December of 1965. This was long after that

EW

John was against domestic abuse and abuse against women but he continued to do it. He almost strangled May Pang to death in 1974 (7 years after this) but Harry Nilsson pulled him off her

EW

The domestic abuse lyrics in Getting Better were written by John Lennon and he admitted it. He struggled with hitting people his whole life. There are several examples of him hitting women and men in the 60s when he was a teenager and in his early 20s, but he continued to do it later as well. He almost strangled May Pang (girlfriend while on a break from Yoko) to death in 1974 and only didn’t because Harry Nilsson pulled him off her. People like to say John only slapped his teenage girlfriend once like that would make it ok (it doesn’t) but it sadly isn’t true

Lee Haskin

Too funny, Lex at the end you said something about the Thanksgiving holiday and then said "although you might be watching this in March." Are you psychic? 🤣🤣🤣 It's awesome that you can appreciate what this album did in 1967 that was far beyond anything that had been done before. Despite the songs themselves, the recording techniques were far ahead of their time. Though this is not my favorite Beatles album, some of my favorite tracks are on this. A Day in the Life is a masterpiece, Fixing a Hole is very simple but is one of my top McCartney tunes. A few years ago at karaoke, I sang "She's Leaving Home" for my mom, my friend picked up the extra mic and sang backups. That piece always chokes me up. I couldn't look at my mom until it was over, and she was in tears. That song always got us both! I will always remember that experience.

Laura Moore

Beatles do not read or write music. The did understand chords, and were known to drive accross town to learn a chord they liked. They clearly understand theory instinctively, but didn't have the vocabulary. Luckily they had George Martin in their corner. He conducted strings and other orchestral pieces. At any rate they wrote down lyrics, but performed and wrote music by ear.

Laura Moore

I heard a Paul McCartney interview where he admits that after Sgt. was completed, he was convinced he was playing out of tune. It took several days for the rest of the band to talk him off the ledge.

Laura Moore

This album is so Britsh. The motifs, the lyrics, no blues here. Very inspired by British dance halls, the lyrics refer to so many British traditions from there own childhoods. "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite' inspired by a poster advertising a magic show. Listen to the lyrics of Day in the Life. Inspired by British headlines.

Laura Moore

John worked very to change. Yoko got him there.

Patti Crichton

I have never heard of a cover of "Within You and Without You" done by anyone, or have heard of one. The people on the cover are real people that existed that each Beatle admired. Meter maids were (and I think still are) in the UK, never in the U.S. that I am aware of, who went around to distribute parking tickets to cars who were still parked after their time was up on the meter, that they paid for. They wore a uniform, that included a skirt, jacket and hat, plus the bag on her shoulder that carried the book, and pens, etc. My eldest son was the drummer in a Beatles cover band, for 10 years. When I had my 64th birthday 15 years ago, the band learned "When I'm 64" to play for me at the gig they were performing at the weekend of my birthday when I was visiting him. It was SOOOOO FUN and I LOVED it. I am a "1st Generation Beatles' fan who was 16/17 years old when the Beatles came to the U.S. for the first time to play live on the Ed Sullivan Show on Feb. 9, 1964. I would turn 17 exactly ONE MONTH from that night, on March 9th. I am STILL a "die hard" Beatles' fan today at 79. The loop you heard after "A DAY IN THE LIFE" was on the playout groove on the vinyl album, which will just continue to play until you lifted the arm containing the needle, OFF of the record and flip it over, or remove the record. There is also a sound that only dogs can only hear, and not humans, BEFORE that last tape loop "Never see it any other way" comes on.

Patti Crichton

NICK and LEX, You haven't quite reacted to ALL the Beatles' catalogue. You haven't reacted to their first few UK albums in chronological order as they were released. Their first "PLEASE PLEASE ME" album, their 2nd "WITH THE BEATLES," ( you did their 3rd "A Hard Day's Night"), their 4th "BEATLES FOR SALE," their 5th "HELP!" their 6th "RUBBER SOUL," their 10th "THE BEATLES" AKA as "THE WHITE ALBUM," their 11th "YELLOW SUBMARINE," their 12th "LET IT BE" and then their FINAL LAST RECORDED ALBUM "ABBEY ROAD" Again, these are ALL the UK releases as this is the way the Beatles and EMI/Parlophone label intended for them to be heard. When Captiol records in the US were involved in releasing the UK albums to America, they slightly changed the track listings and some of the albums ART WORK which was different from the UK counterparts. It wasn't until "SGT. PEPPER" that both the UK and US albums had the same album art work and track listing. Please note, that the "LET IT BE" album was the LAST to be released but is NOT their actual LAST album. "LET IT BE" was RECORDED BEFORE the "ABBEY ROAD" album, but was held back and RELEASED AFTER "ABBEY ROAD" so as to come out when the "LET IT BE" movie was released to movie theaters in 1970 to be a companion piece to the film. "ABBEY ROAD" was their LAST RECORDED album, their "goodbye/swan song" album. TOO many people think their first few albums aren't "important" and will ignore them. THAT is so NOT TRUE. Those first few albums are what STARTED "BEATLEMANIA"! It was THOSE albums that WE who were in that age group, INSTANTLY and INSANELY fell in LOVE with their SOUND and their LOOK, including ME. We had never BEFORE heard ANYTHING like what we were hearing on those first 3 albums. Their first UK album "PLEASE PLEASE ME" was their FIRST # 1 album, staying at the top for 30 WEEKS (that's 7 months and 2 weeks) !! IF those early albums had FLOPPED, we likely would have NEVER had any of the albums that followed. SO, those early albums ARE VERY IMPORTANT, and SHOULD be heard and not brushed off as "meh" or unimportant. OH, another thing, ALL their SINGLES that were released can be found on these 2 albums "PAST MASTERS Vol. 1" and "PAST MASTERS Vol.2" so you should react to all those singles too, that were not on the albums, but were released to the radio stations around the world which were given a lot of air time and charted in the various music charts in each country. On the APRIL 4, 1964 BILLBOARD HOT 100, the Beatles held the TOP 5 songs, plus 7 other of their songs on that same chart, a total of 12. Their albums were # 1 and 2 on the album chart. I HOPE you will see this, but not sure, because it's been 17 months since your did this reaction!

Patti Crichton

WHY can't I see the "Magical Mystery Tour" reaction??

James Horlock

Yellow Submarine is Ringo on vocal.

James Horlock

Oops! And “With a Little Help”.
