We meet Arthur Emerson, who remembers Jackson Elias' visit well. The Chaosium book mentions a friendly man who is frightened by a certain N'Kwane and who gives you all the information you want to know. Too easy!
In my opinion, following the book to the letter is a mistake. It's a safe bet that Emerson, even if he doesn't know everything, is involved in some shady import business and doesn't want to divulge anything about his client. The warehouse is the perfect place to spice things up a bit and make this character unfriendly and suspicious of you.Push him into a corner, or come back discreetly at night to discover through an account book that the network is sprawling (even global), as well as the first clue to Ju-Ju House and Silas N'Kwane. Your players will be much more impressed as they enter this sordid investigation.2-The Harvard Library map is where you meet Miriam Atwright, who corresponded with Jackson Elias. Obviously, the library is very well stocked and you should be able to find a lot of information there. The map was created based on a photograph.3-The Pr. Cowles Office map is where you meet Prof. Anthony Cowles and his daughter Ewa Cowles. He can tell you about various cults, including one in Australia. Why did Elias want to meet him? Did he see similarities with the cults he was investigating? The map is a reworking of one I created for Beyond the Mountains of Madness.4-The Gallery Victoria Post map is a bit of a “bonus” location.Victoria Post is a very close friend of Erica Carlyle's, and she is mentioned in one of the articles recounting the tragic story of the Carlyle expedition. Chaosium's book doesn't say any more than that, and you can simply skip over it if you've managed to get an appointment with Erica Carlyle.
In my opinion, Erica Carlyle is a difficult person to meet. She is extremely wealthy and heads a business empire. She has little time, and why would she be interested in investigators like you, whom she knows nothing about and who are probably profiteers, if not outright crooks?Several third-party publications mention this difficulty. Convincing Erica Carlyle is no easy task. Convincing her advisor Bradley Grey may be a solution. Breaking into her home will be complicated, as it is well guarded. So, contacting Victoria Post, an art dealer who runs a gallery in New York, is a good way to achieve this. Especially since she sells to Erica and could possibly arrange a meeting.Appealing to Victoria's interests with topics such as modern art, which she loves (see the artists she supports), would be very helpful.
5-The Road to Carlyle map is also bit of a “bonus” location. The Carlyle Estate is a bit far from New York City, and you'll definitely need a car to get there. Take advantage of a remote location like this to introduce some danger. After all, the investigators may be starting to cause trouble. Surely they've attracted too much attention. And cultists are resourceful!
On a road like this, they could have been followed by corrupt police, by a suspicious car (the same one seen at the Chelsea Hotel). The road is slippery and an accident can happen so quickly... And why not bring in a summoning...
Note that this road can be used to get to Arkham to see Pr. Anthony Cowles, to Boston to see Miriam Atwright, or to Sing Sing Prison.6-The Carlyle Estate (GF & 1F) is where you meet Erica Carlyle, sister of the late Roger Carlyle. Once you gain her trust (which is not easy, see above), she may show you around the library where Roger spent his days and give you a lot of important information about the expedition he led. If you manage to convince her to walk with you, she may agree to take responsibility for a large part of the upcoming trips, if you keep her informed of the progress of the investigation.
Note that Erica is well protected, the mansion is well guarded, and there are bars on the windows. You will also notice that Roger's room is located above the library, which may have had an impact on his difficult nights. In the next Highlight, I will present the arc of Harlem and Hilton Adams.----Also:Read my post explaining the highlights here
