Leon was silent, everything was rushing through his head, yet at the same time he was thinking about nothing. He never expected to know how he would feel if this ever happened. He had been preparing himself over these passed few hours for if this was the news he was going to receive, but deep in his mind he never actually believed it would be the news he would ever get.
Once Chris was ready to be taken on a stretcher to an aircraft osprey outside, Leon was told to follow. At the moment he was just the body of a human, his mind and soul seeming to not be present anymore.
Chris was secured near the front of the osprey and Leon sat in a chair at Chris' feet. Head hanging low, shoulders sagging with his hands limply resting over his thighs.
Just before they were about to take off for the long trip to the United States, two doctors in full disposable splash suits carry a stretcher and place it at the back of the aircraft. A black body bag covered in at least 2 or 3 layers of plastic was on the stretcher. A tag was stuck into the top layers of protective plastic with writing on it.
The body was too far away to be able to read what was on the tag, however the both of them could easily guess what it says. The aircraft then finally took off from the ground, leaving Germany's soil, next to be landing home in Washington, DC.
After 20 minutes Leon had done well to keep himself together as best he could, then he made the mistake of finally looking over to the stretcher they had brought in. This is what breaks him.
Leon's nose scrunches up, the corners of his mouth turning down as his bottom lip quivered. The tears that had just been falling every so often now flow from his eyes like a stream. Slouching in the seat he was in he covers his face with his hands, loud sobs leaving his mouth as he cries.
Chris laying was in the stretcher hearing Leon cry like this, he had never heard this sound of pure pain leaving Leon before. He too covered his eyes with a single hand and let tears flow, silently sniffing as his own bottom lip quivered.
-----*9 Hours Later*-----
The whole trip consisted of Chris sleeping and Leon nodding in and out of sleep. He had sat beside the body bag on the stretcher after an hour into the trip. Not caring if the ground was comfortable or not he stayed by the body the whole flight.
Now back home on American soil Chris was carried to another helicopter to be taken to a hospital where he will stay until he is healed enough to go home. Leon was placed in quarantine for 2 days in the DSO's Private Hospital connected to the HQ Buildings. Hunnigan was able to come and see him, asking if she could be the one to tell him he was allowed to go home.
Leon sat in the hospital room, wearing sky blue pants and top the patients were given to wear while in quarantine and recovering in the hospital's patient wing. The door opens.
Leon stays looking out the window, hand fiddling with the white tag around his right wrist, expecting it to be someone with his food. He hadn't been hungry but he could hear your voice in his head telling him to at least eat half of what he was given.
Seeing a familiar reflection in the window his head snaps around, seeing Hunnigan with a bag of his clothes, shoes and other belongings he had been wearing upon entering quarantine. He stands to his feet and walks towards her, eyes having dark rings around them, his complexion paler than normal as he hadn't been getting the right nutrients into him. His cheeks sunken slightly from lack of nutrition.
"Oh Leon.." She says placing his bag of things on the desk beside the door.
He continues to advance closer to her, and she knew exactly what he was going to do. Opening her arms she invites him for the hug he would be taking from her even if she hadn't invited it. He wraps his arms around her and rest his cheek on her shoulder as she rubs his back. Leon was one for physical touch, she had learned this over the many many years of being his FOS since coming into the DSO.
He pulls away from the hug after a few seconds, feeling the prick of more tears wanting to show their ugly heads in his eyes. He hangs his head low and she gently placed her index finger under his chin to urge him to look at her. She could see he had been crying, and a lot.
"Why don't you get dressed? I am going to drive you home. Your bike has been taken back to your place so it'll be waiting there for you." She explained.
Leon only gives a nod and takes the bag on the desk and leaves into the bathroom to change. Placing the hospital clothing in a material hamper in there.
Leaving the bathroom, Hunnigan was standing against the desk she had left his stuff.
Leon followed her out of the building, knowing which car was hers he could spot it in the car park and makes it his destination. Opening the driver's side door for Ingrid she gives him a smile as she slides into her car. Closing the door after she was in, Leon walks around the front of the silver Audi, sliding into the passenger side of the car. He rests his head against the seat.
Ingrid looks over to Leon as he exhales heavily, giving him a gently look of concern. Her car comes to life and she drives Leon home. Ingrid usually has the radio playing at a low volume, waiting until she was out of the city before turning it off.
Leon's head turns from looking out the window to the radio, knowing she was about to speak up.
"I know this is a silly question, but how are you holding up?" She asks, flicking a glance at Leon before looking back to the road in front of her.
Leon just huffs out a breathy laugh, turning his head to the window on his right, chin resting in his hand. "I don't know. Not good. But at the same time it hasn't hit me yet. You know?"
Ingrid nods in understanding. She wasn't sure how he would be feeling, but she was also torn up about the situation. They sit at a red light and Ingrid suddenly exhales, turning her blinker off, going straight instead of turning left into the hills to Leon's house.
"My house is that way." Leon says as they start moving on the green.
"I know. I'm not taking you home."
Leon frowns looking to her with confusion. "What? You wanting to get something to eat first? I'm not hungry so you don't need to worry about me." He says turning back to look out his window.
"I'm taking you back to the Facility."
This makes Leon adjust his position in his seat. "I don't need to go back to the hospital if that's what you're thinking."
Ingrid shakes her head as she does a loop around the block, undoing their progress of going to Leon's home. After a few minutes of silence she pipes up. "I'm taking you to the morgue."
Leon felt his chest tighten. He would like to say his goodbyes, hold her hand one last time, apologies. He needed closure. "Thank you."
Ingrid nods and continues to drive back to the facility, parking her car around the back of the hospital wing. Both make their way into the lower levels where the morgue is.
Walking up to the front desk, Leon trails behind Ingrid, hands in his leather jacket pockets.
"We are wanting to view a body." Ingrid says to the receptionist.
"What is the name?" She asks, rolling her chair to the other side of the desk surrounding her. Taking out a folder from a drawer she flicks through to the back.
Ingrid gives the receptionist your name and she nods getting your body's location.
"This way." She says standing up, leading the both of them down the cold hallway and into a room on the right.
Entering the room, the lady walks along the wall of silver doors. "Right here." She says as she opens the silver door with your name and pulls out the tray. The same black body bag is on the tray, this time without the layering of plastic.
"Lucky you came in today, she was supposed to be taken to the furnace this morning. But we seem to be having trouble with the lighting mechanism." She nods and looks to Leon, taking notice now if his posture.
"I'll leave you alone." She then leaves the room, closing the door behind her to give them that little bit more privacy.
Ingrid watches the lady leave and turns to the black body bag. Taking it upon herself, she starts to unzip it. Ingrid frowns upon seeing the body. "That's.." She then struts towards the door, opening it and catching the lady halfway down the hall.
Leon's back straightens as he sees Ingrid leave the room, that wasn't like her, she wasn't one to shy away from a dead body. Even if it was a close friend. Leon brings himself to look at the body bag. Stepping closer he opens what Ingrid had unzipped.
It wasn't you. Was there maybe a mix up?
He steps back and looks at the name on the metal door. That was your name, so why wasn't this you lying on the tray? He closed the bag and gently pushed the tray in, closing the door quietly to be respectful to whoever this was.
Leon leaves the room and walks at a fast pace towards Ingrid talking to the lady going through files on her desk.
"I'm sorry, Ma'am. But this is the exact same body that came in the other day. Everything is checking out other than the obvious." The poor lady says stressing, maybe there was a mix up? But all the information she had was correct.
Ingrid looks to Leon who overhears as he approached. "I don't think she came back with you." She says to Leon who's eyes widen. She couldn't tell what emotion it was from though.
Leon hurries to the stairs and starts to walk up them quickly. "Leon!" She calls then huffs out, turning to the girl behind the counter. "Thank you, but maybe we should get finger prints of the body and see who it is before you burn her."
The girl then nods, hopping on the desk phone to her manager. Ingrid chasing after Leon and exiting the building.
Leon was pacing, his hand holding his phone to his ear.
"Come on.. pick up." He says to himself.
"Leon?"
"Chris! It's not (Y/N)!" Leon said as soon as he heard Chris answer.
"What? What do you mean it's not them?" Chris was confused. "The body that came back with us?"
Leon continues to pace back and forth, his free hand running through his hair, pulling his fringe back. "Yes. (Y/N)'s still in Germany!"
