Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well :3 The purpose of this post is to discuss Patreon’s new feature that allows videos to be uploaded directly to the app/platform.

Context (warning: lots of text ahead xD)

To give you some context, years ago I used to upload my videos directly to Patreon using Vimeo, but that platform was charging me too much, and sometimes the links wouldn’t work properly. Because of that, I stopped using it and switched to MEGA instead.

The way I’ve been sharing videos with you is through MEGA links, either by sending them through private messages or by having you access the links through the welcome message and Collections. There have been several issues with MEGA over time, but I’ve gradually found ways to solve them.

I addressed the download limit by providing smaller files known as -FIX- versions. I also addressed the accessibility issue by contacting Patreon to fix the welcome message (there was a period when it wasn’t displaying properly), and I made the links easier to access by using the “Links” tab at the top of the page and “Collections” to help you find them more easily.

I’ve been working this way for quite some time now, and I feel like my current workflow is pretty stable. I also think most of my followers have probably gotten used to it by now—or maybe not, which is exactly why I’m making this post xD

A few days ago, Patreon added the option to upload video files directly to a post, making it much easier to publish videos without requiring all those extra steps to access the files through MEGA.

Now I’ll share my thoughts about this in the form of a few questions, because I feel like explaining everything in one giant wall of text would be a pain xD These are questions and thoughts that I’m having a hard time figuring out on my own, so that’s where you come in :3 I’d really appreciate hearing what you think.

Would using this feature mean that I should re-upload all the animations I’ve made directly to Patreon?

From what I can tell, videos uploaded this way can’t be downloaded. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Especially considering what happened recently—someone reposted four exclusive animations on social media. They’ve already been taken down, but it still happened.

Would I use both MEGA and Patreon’s video feature at the same time, potentially affecting my workflow, or would I stick with just one of the two? If I use both, MEGA would essentially only exist as a way to download the video, which would make uploading it directly to Patreon feel somewhat redundant, since you’d already be able to watch the video while downloading it or after downloading it from MEGA.

Should I simply ignore this feature and continue with my current workflow, using MEGA the way I always have?

I personally like downloading video's because I can watch them whenever. I don't have good internet with my phone so it's nice to just download and watch later. I would be worried about patreon looking into what you post more if you do use the feature. They like to overstep and ban people for silly reasons. As for the milk thing, huh? Me personally would say MEGA for tier 3 and patreon for tier 2 and lower if that makes sense. Gives you a reason to use both if you decide to. Not my choice though.

Maybe make the download available for a higher tier? Or just leave it as is IMO. The new feature is nice but I also wouldn't trust Patreon 100% with it long-term

Maybe a test run might be worth it? I don't mind mega so far; having the option to download is nice if streaming isn't working but its not a make or break for me.. Dropping the next video on patreon and on mega to judge engagement might be a good way to go if it's feasible, but I'm here for your content whichever way you choose

I do enjoy being able to download the videos, but am very aware that is were the most piracy can happen. So maybe making the Mega more public for people to access after the videos are no longer Paid exclusive? That would be my thought, anyway, but it's totally dependant on how you wish to handle it

Actually, when I uploaded the video and was setting everything up, I saw an option for the thumbnail, and it said that it had to be suitable for all audiences since it’s something everyone will be able to see. So yeah, I’d have to be very careful with that. As for the second point, are you suggesting that I limit the download option to Tier 3? That’s actually a good idea.

I feel like maybe you could work with both, but upload the videos to MEGA first (for downloading purpose), and then later upload them to Patreon. Kind of like a way to make the viewers revisit the animations, helping the time between each post feel a bit less empty 🤔

Limiting downloads to Tier 3 sounds good, although in that case, would I remove the MEGA folders and links for Tier 2 and below? I mean, if that were the case, Tier 3 members already have access to everything, and it would reduce redundant storage on MEGA

It makes sense. You keep download an option while hopefully not taking too much time to set up. Idk what you do for tier2. Also don't skip the milk thing. Why do lemon go in milk??

It wouldn’t make much sense because the public videos are uploaded to social media, which helps me reach more people. Limiting them to MEGA would be somewhat redundant.

But if I upload it to MEGA first, everyone will download the video, and even if I upload it to Patreon afterward, they probably won’t pay much attention to it because they’ll already have the video on their devices. And some people will ask where they can download it, so I’d end up having to answer the same question over and over again xD

Seems like a good call covering the bases to me. Higher tier to prevent leaked videos and people at least still have the option, then see how that works for people from there. Now that you've mentioned the censoring from patreon over the thumbnails though, I'm a little concerned given patreons approach to NSFW in the past that they might try to police that stuff more

What do you think about this: only Tier 3 members would be able to download the videos and have access to MEGA, while Tier 2 members would only be able to watch them on Patreon (not including Tier 3-exclusive videos)?

By “higher tier,” we’re still talking about Tier 3, right? Not a possible Tier 4? xD The problem with leaks is that as long as people have access to downloads, there will always be someone who leaks the content. And while there are ways to report that kind of thing, it’s still frustrating and discouraging to see it happen. As for Patreon, my understanding is that you can post 18+ content as long as it’s exclusive. The problem would be if something with more suggestive or mature themes were made publicly available. In a way, that’s one advantage of MEGA: I’ve kept Patreon limited to context-free, non-suggestive images, while MEGA contains the main content.

Some people might be unable to download it for whatever reason, so the Patreon upload would be a good alternative to still be able to see your work 🤔

My thought would be less limiting it to MEGA and more where you'd have one or more MEGA folders just for archival/download purposes that you add videos and sequences to when you also upload to to Social Medias. So you'd still make the public posts as normal, but then you'd also have a link on your profile to all of your current public works. What some creators do as well is have an Archival tier on patreon with the express purpose of gaining access to *All* public artworks done by that creator. You could even hide a MEGA link on a cheaper, or even free, tier of your Patreon. Thus leaving your usual social posts while still giving people access to download them, but only if they check out and follow your Patreon

And about the reupload, sadly, it's the internet. There will be reuploads one way or another, weither we want it or not ^^' Best you can do is ask to delete them soon as you notice them, but I wouldn't pay too much attention to stopping it right away, might be too much effort for not many results sadly

Oh yeah I'm thinking start with the download option in tier 3 and see if it needs adjustment after a trial run. And that's good to hear, as long as patreon doesn't seem like they'll have a problem then it's definitely worth a shot. I like people having the option to download but not at the cost of your vids getting leaked.

This is true. I was just thinking more as a convinience thing. Find your Patreon, oh hey, here's a link to all your previous works ;3 But I have read through the other comments, as a Tier 3 member, I would not complain about Tier 3's still having access to the Mega links ;3

If the goal is also to maintain less redundant storage then just making archive access part of a higher tier makes sense to me, ultimately would be less work for you too I imagine! The current "Tier 2" folder contents could just be folded in.

Considering Patreon could drag you through the mud over any violation potentially banning your account if they choose to I wouldn’t bother. Unless you make PG versions of everything or edit the videos so they end before the clothes rips off. I like MEGA and also like the idea of having something to show for money spent. If this all goes tits up at some point I’ll still have some of the greatest inflation porn ever created thanks to you. Densel Torrington would be proud!🫡

I prefer being able to download. If something happens/changes with Patreon one day, then suddenly it's all gone.

I would be against the patreon only uploads or even patreon uploads at all. First personally I like being able to download vids, means I don't have to mess with mega and or have a internet connection to rewatch vids. Additionally should a artist fully disappear for any reason then I at least have a archive of material. Second Patreon has proven itself to be unreliable to creators of lewd content, or content Patreon deems lewd. It has removed, banned, and forced censorship on accounts in the past. No reason to trust it now as your place to post now as they could choose to at the least delete / modify the content at a whim or at worst use it to remove your entire account, since who knows what AI it might use to scrub your videos for content it could later use as a reason to punish you. Though I do understand you wanting to use Patreon and its lack of a download feature to help protect your content from piracy, which is more and more rampant it seems these days. Though I will say nothing is truly protected from piracy, as if it streams on the net it can be recorded or downloaded if you have enough time and drive to store it. However at least for now I pay annually for a Full Subscription to Mega just because so many creators use it to upload and I know that MEGA at least seems reliable about not giving a crap about lewd content and for the most part actually protecting privacy as much as any company can when it comes to not tracking who downloads what, for better or worse. Personally I would not mind you adding tiers to your subscriptions to add a MEGA archive level. Meaning pay more for access you your now very impressive back catalog, and have a cheaper option for people who only want to stream videos off of patreon, or some other non-archivable site. Even tiers where you can access say three months, or six months, or something like that and then a even more expensive one for a year, or all time. As to point five, never had milk with lemon so I dunno, more research is required.

Either way, if I upload something that Patreon doesn’t like, they’ll send me a notification asking me to edit it, and that’s it. If that ever happens, I’ll reconsider a few things.

Patreon isn’t as strict as many artists make it seem. If I upload something that violates the rules, they simply send me an email saying that they’re going to hide the post and ask me to edit it before reposting it. I understand that I can’t fight piracy, so I’ll simply trust that there are still good people out there who are willing to support my work. In return, I’ll continue treating my supporters fairly, keeping my content accessible, and creating content that’s genuinely worth supporting :3 I don’t plan on making downloads exclusive to a more expensive tier. In a recent post where I shared my conclusions, I mentioned that doing that could be a little unfair to subscribers in the lower tiers who are already used to receiving certain benefits. The best thing I can do is add more benefits, not take them away ( •̀ ω •́ )✧ And the milk with lemon thing is just a joke xD

I personally do not like MEGA because they rate limit you and have a cap on how much you are allowed to download. And even if you reach that cap and decide to just watch the video on MEGA, they still don't let you without paying for a subscription
