This month's Live Lesson:  "Losing My Religion" by REM

At the beginning of class, we'll review last month's lesson on "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in the key of G. Music is attached to this post.  Please post a homework link if you've had a chance to work on the tune!

I taught "Losing My Religion" (here's the REM original for reference, and you can practice with it since my arrangement is in the original key, yay!) to my Advanced Beginner class back in San Francisco many years ago. It seems to be in the 100-Days zeitgeist right now, so I revisited my previous arrangement and streamlined into one page, and added a few more fun extras, like riffs and strum variations.

This would be a fun song to play with another uke friend. Let's make that a challenge! Find a uke friend to collab on this with! We can talk about how to do that in the lesson.

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

How to Watch Live

1. Click on this direct link to the lesson: https://youtube.com/live/egeKHpKacHQ

For those who are new, please note this is a private link, intended for Patrons only.

2. Log in to YouTube to join the live chat, and please say hello!  I can't see that you're watching unless you chat.  If you have trouble using chat on a mobile device/ tablet, you may want to try on a desktop or laptop browser.

3. Feel free to post your questions to me, or to the community.

How to Watch Later

1. Watch the video linked above (it's the same as the live link).

2. Feel free to post your comments and questions below.

Jackie

Hello, I hope to join you for the zoom. I am in the UK and it will be 1am so fingers crossed I can make it. Im looking forward to it. I can sleep in the next morning, so I'm lucky :-)

Suzanne Wu

Hi Cynthia! I will not be able to make it today but I will be watching later on Your Tube. I have a question about the Somewhere Over the. Rainbow in the Key of G. I am learning it because I will be performing in with classmates at my 50th high school reunion. I struggle with the Bm. My hand stretch is hard. I try to replace the 4 fingers with my pinky but it is so short the pad hits the c string. My compression of the E and A also is a little fuzzy. If today is a good day to talk about hand placement for short stiff fingers please do. Best regards, Suzanne Wu (Bellingham, WA)

Linda Austin

Aloha, Cynthia! Here's the link to my attempt at Somewhere Over the Rainbow. My challenge is.....everything! Consistent strum. My main focus right now though, is mindful chording (the first knuckle of my chording fingers need to bend quite a bit more, closer to 90º, otherwise adjacent strings are accidentally muted.). I posted this to the 100 Days Challenge FB page. It's over 3 mins long but, of course, no need to listen to the whole thing. :-) I hope this link works as I'm new to posting videos on my YouTube channel. Thank you Cynthia! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czbfkRQ9yWE

Oh I didnt make it. I fell asleep. I’m listening to the recording now. It’s 7am here in the uk. My ukulele is ready!

Greg Turner

Outside my time zone so won’t be live but I can’t remember looking forward to a song lesson as much as this absolute classic from my “youth” :-)

Cynthia Lin

hi linda! this video is private, can you change the setting to "unlisted"? that way i can watch without it being public

Cynthia Lin

hi cynthia! great! see if you can focus more on the metronome, you might need to get used to it by active listening to it, and just playing the uke first. add the singing after your uke metronome practice.

Jenny Selig

Hi, Suzanne! Not sure if Cynthia already addressed this, but usually it is more about wrist and arm placement than how long someone's fingers are. Finger placement is also important -- getting up on the tips of your fingers, not the pad, helps.

Cynthia Lin

nice work, joe! i'd encourage you to use the metronome and get crisp with the rhythm. it will bring up your playing overall!

Cynthia Lin

hey linda! great to see you! i'd suggest playing along with one of the play along videos. you are sometimes adding an extra measure. you can slow down the video so that you can practice your mindful chording.
