{Patron-only post}

aloha all!  a warm welcome to all the new Patrons!

for those who are new:

  • the first week of the month, we vote for the monthly tutorial. (i'm behind on this, blame it on the July 4th holiday!)
  • the 2nd week of the month, i share a chord chart for that song (for $3+ Patrons) and teach a live lesson of the song (for $5+ Patrons).  this month's live lesson is Thurs 7/13 at 4:30pm PDT - details will be posted separately.
  • at the end of the month, i publish a Patron-supported tutorial on YouTube for everyone to enjoy.
  • we have a calendar on our forum (please sign up and check out the discussion topics) where you can see the monthly events.

first, some news from my corner (and reasons for why i'm behind on our Patron events schedule for this month!).  the SF Uke-tober Fest that Ukulenny and I are organizing sold out of Festival Passes in 11 days - excited to see some Patrons there!  we are working on expanding the Festival so that more people can join.  i'm also close to releasing my first collection of uke songs from the #100Days project - it will be called Ukulele Days, and it really helped to have Patron feedback in curating the collection.  can't wait to share it!

after last month's Live Lesson (which was too challenging for most, thank you for the feedback), i decided to make a more simplified tutorial for Stairway to Heaven, which was last month's vote winner.  it's an elaborate song, and will probably take me till next week to complete.  i know some folks were interested in the full tab with solo - that project will have to go on the back burner for now.  if you Google for "Stairway to Heaven ukulele tab", you'll be able to find some great resources.

NEW VOTING RULE - I get to pick from the Top 3

it's telling that more than a few of you wrote me last month to comment on how the votes have been skewing towards intermediate-level, complicated songs.  i hear you.  my goal is to make ukulele fun and accessible for as many people as possible.  so this month, I'll choose the song that's best suited for an all-levels tutorial from the Top 3 vote-getters.  let's see how this goes - maybe in the future we alternate between easier songs and harder songs.  thoughts?  suggestions?  feel free to comment below.

HOW TO VOTE

below you see the top 4 poll choices and the top 5 write-in songs from last month's vote.

1. vote for as many of the checkbox song choices as you like below - multiple votes allowed.  please note - as soon as you tick the checkbox, the vote is counted.  (you can look at the ticker on the right!)  note #2 - some Patrons have commented that the voting doesn't work on certain devices, so you might need a desktop browser vs iPad.

2. in addition, you can comment below with 1 write-in song per Patron - just 1 comment with 1 song that you want a tutorial for!  (any additional songs/comments will not be counted)

3. plus, you can upvote other people's song requests by clicking the heart on their comments - so if you and someone else write-in the same song, and then heart each other's comments, then you've essentially doubled your voting power. :)  definitely review other people's comments and upvote your faves.

voting closes Tuesday 7/11 at 11:59pm PDT.  i'll announce the winner on Wednesday, and post the chord chart Thursday in time for the Live Lesson.

happy weekend, and happy voting!

xo cynthia.

If You Want to Sing Out - Cat Stevens

Brenda Hawks

Love this song. On one of his albums when he sings it at one place in song he's playing the ukulele!

Margot Stone

I also vote for more strumming then picking whatever the song is, just not there yet :)

Thorvald Duus

This time i vote for "time in a bottle"

Margot Stone

Thanks Thorvald, I will try that, I learned the strumming version easily for this song, I will take your advice and try the picking. :)

Joshua Green

Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) - ha take that Thorvald and you Jim Croce people!

Jo Ann Wong

Say You Won't Let Go by James Arthur

Joshua Green

My thought about the beginner intermediate conundrum: DO BOTH, one of each per month! After all, the easy ones will probably be a snap for you. Maybe make $2 a month (or whatever you need) a requirement to get the charts if it needs to be more worth your time.

I'd love to get a lesson on Ripple, which I think would be very accessible. I prefer the Jane's Addiction cover, but the original is also lovely. ;)

Stefan Dzwonnik

Can we vote for a song that you want to learn / teach? In the choice just include brackets with 'teachers choice'. Your song choices are always brilliant and I've found the popular vote doesn't generate as much enjoyment from people then the songs that you've personally chosen to teach.

Phylicia

This is what I was thinking, but it seems like asking a lot. I don't mind the idea of alternating from easier one month to more challenging the next month. Sometimes I have to take long breaks from ukulele and having something new and simple to get back into it is fun for me.

Phylicia

The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson

Wendy Dennis

Sitting Waiting Wishing by Jack Johnson

Jon F

In My Life by Lennon–McCartney

Lynn Haney

Thank you for looking to do a more manageable tutorial this month. Though the songs have been great and I've picked good pointers, it's been frustrating not to be able to work a song well

Elizabeth Terrill

I would love Pineapple Mango. Almost won last time.

Bonnie Schroth

Cynthia, I love the teaching level and the way you break everything down. It is so rewarding to learn some beautiful picking. Thank You!

Lisa Guillard

I love your tutorials! Thank you so much! I would love to learn Nothing Else Matters by Metallica.

Claire Marshel

hoping for Here Comes the Sun soon, you version is so nice!

Stuart Bode

Let it be me . A song from Ben E King , has been covered by many including Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers . Stunning song .

Dana Calta

Here Comes the Sun..would be great. Also does anyone have the music/chords for Carole Kings - One Small Voice?

Cynthia Lin

thanks lynn! other Patrons have voiced their frustrations as well, so i'm glad we can address it this month. always open to hearing your feedback!

Cynthia Lin

stefan, thank you for your comment - i think you really hit the nail on the head, and you're helping me rethink the approach for voting. i do spend a lot of time both choosing suitable teaching songs and then crafting a lesson that will bring maximum ukulele enjoyment. next month, i can offer the Patrons a choice of the songs i think will be most fun to learn (and teach), and we can vote from those options. this method will definitely result in better tutorials for a wider audience. i will definitely take the popular vote into consideration, but we'll make "maximum ukulele enjoyment" the top priority.

Cynthia Lin

if it's just a matter of making a beginner vs intermediate chord chart - that would be do-able. but would the charts feel incomplete without each having an accompanying lesson/tutorial? that's more work than i can handle right now, but i will keep thinking about how to incorporate it all.

Thorvald Duus

Think it is fine as it is - last month for you, this month for me - I pay for both beginner and intermediate level - sometimes the beginner songs are more difficult than intermediate songs - Remember - there are only 24 hours a day, and i think ms. Lin works 20 just for US - if i was her boss i would send her on wacation for 2 weeks.

John Lynch

Mr. Blue Sky. Joe Brown's version might be a bit complicated, but it sounds so fun ")

John Lynch

I vote not so much expecting to have my selection chosen, but to give Cynthia some suggestions ... but as far as complicated, or difficult songs go, I thing Cynthia's patrons are becoming more accomplished. Regarding Stairway to Heaven, oh I loved the two rock strum patterns on sheet 3 ... still working on them, but they sound so cool.

Carrie Meyers

I think you need to have more complicated tutorials mixed in or it would be too boring and you will lose patrons that are more advanced .

Elisa Jones

Eternal flame by the Bangles

Jo Winchester

Teach Your Children - Crosby, Stills, Nash (and I'm not sure if Young was in the group at this point, or not!).

Thorvald Duus

Young was on and of thrue the years - Teach your children is on the album "De`ja` vu" 1970 Crosby Stills & Nash ( no young)

Susan Marcin

Twenty One Pilots House of Gold

Joshua Green

Without meaning to be a snob, I agree. Those of us who are more intermediate probably could figure out many of the basic ones just by looking up tabs on the internet

Joshua Green

Actually, I probably would be satisfied with one of your chord charts for an intermediate song in lieu of tutorial if you were doing a beginner song tutorial one month for example. Your charts are way easier to learn from than what typically passes for tabs.

Joshua Green

I have to admit I feel a little guilty and greedy going for two songs I suggested in two consecutive months. On the other hand, if that's what the group wants.. who am I to turn down such a gift? Opportunistically, I'd also point out that Time in a Bottle is hardly the beginner song that many seem to want this month. That said, I will definitely enjoy the tutorial if Time in a Bottle gets it.

Joshua Green

I love this song and the Harold and Maude movie. I guess that movie really lucked out in getting Cat Stevens to do the whole sound track. Anyway, I've tried playing it with some success but I could definitely use help with the strumming pattern. I think it would be a great tutorial.

Eric Hunter

Eternal flame by the Bangels!!

Wendy Kriegel

BLUE AND BORDERLINED BY CYNTHIA LIN OR YOUR FAVORITE ORIGINAL OR UKULENNY'S NEW DAY!!! You guys rock!

Joshua Green

By the way, for fans of I will, check out the I will tabs in Cynthia's Beatles Chord Chart Pack, available from this patreon site. It has chords for 54 Beatles songs! A strumming pattern of DDD (1 2 3) or D D Du (1 2 3&) works well. 3/4 time I believe. I do not intend this as a vote, just as a suggestion for others.

Holly Soptick

Excited to become a patron today. I've learned so much from you already, Cynthia. You're a fabulous teacher!!

Claire S

My children and I found your channel when we searched for "Lava". I do understand that songs that appeal to a younger crowd might not make it on your list. However, we still enjoy learning all the songs that you teach. For this round, I'll put in my daughter's vote: "True Colours".

Thorvald Duus

What about your "twin sister" who played the bas a month ago, can`t she help you out - maybe she can take the beginner class and you can do the intermediate class - do the intermediate and i will catch up in a year or 3 if you don`t raise the bar at that time, what ever i will stay on board.

Jenny Selig

Yes! I've been working on my own arrangement but would love to see Cynthia's.

Jenny Selig

Her existing patrons probably are becoming more accomplished, but there are likely always beginners, too. I'm sure it's a rolling thing.

Jo Ann Wong

If we are throwing ideas out here... I'd like a month where we vote on songs where they all sound more Hawaiian! Where the focus is on the ukulele. Thanks! 🏝🏝🏝

Lucy McGinley

I would like a tutorial of "What a Wonderful World"

Lucy McGinley

I would like a tutorial of "What a Wonderful World."

Mark Freeman

"You Only Wake Up When It's Over" on the Nashville Soundtrack. Incredible song. I'd love to see what you could do with this, Cynthia.

April C

fly me to the moon - frank sinatra

Joshua Green

So... Will it be a Landslide? Only Time will reveal the True Colors of those who vote in Ipanema.

Phylicia

Aww I hope not! I really want Time in a Bottle and it almost won last month, good thing it's Cynthia's choice of top three. Maybe?

Tina Mast

To speak to how to structure the tutorials in terms of difficulty, I really liked what you did with the Moon River tutorial. There were three levels of difficulty with a simple strum, an intermediate strum, and fingerpicking. I know you can't do it exactly that way for every song, but it was a great way for me to stairstep up the level of difficulty. I'm very much a beginner, started playing uke in January with basically no musical instrument experience. Thanks to your wonderful tutorials, I'm playing your versions of I'm Yours, Ho Hey, Riptide, Moon River, and La Vie En Rose. Am working on Sound of Silence, too. i can't wait until I can attempt Banana Pancakes but I'm not there yet. Last suggestion: maybe mix in a few more recent pop hits into the voting mix? Would love to see some Mumford and Sons, Strumbellas, Walk Off the Earth, and Passenger!

Tina Mast

Just going to repeat my suggestions for other artists to pull music from in case anyone wants to upvote. This one is for Mumford and Sons.

Tina Mast

Walk Off the Earth

Kathy Klister

Tina, I was thinking the same idea... even just two levels of the winning song, so that beginners can play it & be inspired to reach towards the more complex arrangements. That's what Cynthia's teaching has done for me. It's been so fun!

John Sheardown

"Wonderful tonight"-Clapton, please. I like the way you are doing the tutorials, with an initial introduction to chords, then simple strum, intermediate strum, then fingerpicking with some new chords and transition advice, with the chords up on screen and you sing in tune, too! What more, really, can anyone want? You have given us the lot!?! There is something there in each tutorial for almost everyone, except perhaps the most advanced. Over the weeks one can with practice, pick up the fingerpicking and develop further by adding our own little extras, if necessary. I think you are doing a great job. Please keep it up. You will spoil your work if you try to please everyone, but your supporters need to show themselves too. Thank you and keep it going from NZ.

Thorvald Duus

Next time we vote I` ll sleep with my eyes open - before i went to bed time in a bottle was in front 91 -88 for Landslide.

Vanessa Causley

Looks like Time in a bottle just can t win !

Phylicia

This makes me sad, this would be the third month in a row now!! What gives

Eric Guerin

Personally, I think the voting is fun and all...but I'd rather Cynthia use her own expertise to pick songs that are timely and would be fun to play on the uke.

Thorvald Duus

If you want to play uke - don`t waste your "time in a bottle" love Landslide too, but think this one is more my level.

Phylicia

I like the idea of voting too, but I have to agree here. It's a little tiring to see the song I've voted for almost win for three months in a row. There's got to be a better way to consider patron input. I can't wait to see what Cynthia does going forward.

Melissa

Dear Cynthia, thanks so much for your tutorials, I could listen and watch you for hours. Have learned tons already! Greetings from Switzerland, Melissa

Melissa

My requests:f Hey Jude, Beatles. Wooden Heart, Elvis.

Melissa

I'm in love with you, Raben

Melissa

BTW, this last one I'm sure is unknown outside of Switzerland, and not very well known inside Switzerland, but it is definetly worth looking up (youtube), catchy tune, good mood song, my husband's and my song when we were younger...

Thorvald Duus

TIME IN A BOTTLE - will by blacklistet from now on - I denie to vote for that song again - don`t think i will ever play it - unlees some one in SF ask me to.

Vanessa Causley

No Time In A Bottle it s staying right there in the bottle, no one is uncorking it any time soon !

Joshua Green

I will vote for it next time. You guys deserve a free ukulele or trip to ukefest or something.
