Aloha Patrons!

Excited to share a new Ukulele Play-Along video with a twist - the song is Yellow by Coldplay but with Chinese lyrics.  Plus, I'm going on tour to China!  More below...

Yellow - Chinese version from Crazy Rich Asians

This version was featured in the recent blockbuster movie Crazy Rich Asians, and I've been obsessed with it since I first heard it in the movie. Definitely go see the film (and support Asian American filmmakers and Asian actors on the big screen), and even if you can't read and pronounce the words, try playing along with the song.  Chord chart attached, and also available on Gumroad.

Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXZk23r6xaA

I've really enjoyed working on this song to beef up my Mandarin skills - because I'm headed to China on tour next week!

October Music China tour with Ohana Ukuleles

This month, I am going to China for the first time, representing Ohana Ukuleles as part of their Music China tour.  I'll be in good company - I'm touring with Hawaiian jazz ukulele legend Benny Chong, acclaimed jazz bassist Jennifer Leitham, and my good friend Abe Lagrimas Jr.  We are performing and leading workshops in 5-6 cities across China - I can't think of a better way to see China than through the lens of ukulele!

Here's our tour itinerary.  Do you know anyone in these cities?  Please let them know!  I'll post more details as I find out about them.

  • 10.10-11 上海 Shanghai
  • 10.13 常熟 Changshu
  • 10.14 杭州Hangzhou
  • 10.17-18 成都 Chengdu
  • 10.20-21 深圳 Shenzhen

Follow me on Instagram @cynthialinmusic for stories from tour, and I will attempt to keep a Tour Diary through Patreon posts (as internet/firewalls allow).

Thank you - 謝謝 - xiè xiè (pronounced shieh shieh)

Happy strumming!

xo cynthia.

Cynthia, i just want to thank you for what you do teaching Ukulele to the public. You have helped me beyond words but the MOST important thing i get from you, out of the 100 other "ukulele instructors" on youtube and Patreon is you MOTIVATE ME!!!!!!! You make me want to pick up the Ukulele and play it, you make me feel like "YES, i can learn that", and THAT to me is more important than all the teaching in the world. Again, THANK YOU!!!!!

I feel so lucky already, never thought you would come to China one day, already watching the online lessons hasn’t been so easy, we need vpn to access ins,FB and such websites, including your videos on Patreon because they re up loaded via YouTube which is as well blocked here. Truly happy you are coming to shanghai, so people getting know you we need awesome uke teacher like you here! :) and how about the workshop where will it be ? The exhibition center ?

Mike Olsen

Very nice, Cynthia. Could you also provide the song chart with English lyrics?

Will Peralta

This makes me curious if you spoke Mandarin before, or did you learn the lyrics for this song?

Jennifer Gaul

I live in Hangzhou and am trying to figure out where Cynthia is playing? Anyone know? It's this Sunday and I'd like to go to the concert.

Janice Collins

Will you be putting out a tutorial for this song? I can't seems to find my fingers. lol.. BTW, I only started learning playing uke a little over the year ago and you are the best teacher I found! Thank you!

Jess Souza

This is one of the coolest things I've ever heard. I would love love to learn to play Ye lai xiang one day!!

Gregory Savage

Greg SavageI would love to come to your concert in Shenzhen but tickets and venue are a bit of a mystery. I have looked at all the sites I know and am none the wiser. Someone please help.

Gregory Savage

I will be learning this song. There will be huge brownie points where I work in China for learning this song.

Leanna Heiman

You are so awesome, Cynthia!! I speak Chinese and would love to learn more Chinese songs on the ukulele, but it's not easy to find the chords for many tunes so I have had to come up with my own arrangement. Not a bad exercise, but transposing songs is a new skill and takes time. I'll definitely work on learning this one so I can record and post to the 100 Days of Ukulele group. So excited!!! :-)
