Aloha Patrons!

Welcome to October, and welcome new Patrons! If you are a new Patron, please introduce yourself in the comments below. Feel free to share how long you've been playing, what kind of uke you play, if you have an uke club to play with, what songs you've been working on. And if you've been a Patron for a while and want to share, please go ahead. This is a good place for your questions too - fellow Patrons, feel free to help me answer any newbie questions.

Thanks to all of you for directly supporting my work and for creating a powerful and positive online ukulele community.

A note for newbies - I know Patreon can be a bit hard to navigate. Please be patient and explore, and see the Community Notes at the bottom of this post for more info on joining our communities and where to get help.

Download the Cynthia Lin Patron App

October China Tour and Tour Diary

This month, I am going to China for the first time, representing Ohana Ukuleles as part of their Music China tour along with jazz ukulele legend Benny Chong, acclaimed jazz bassist Jennifer Leitham, and my good friend Abe Lagrimas Jr. We are performing and leading workshops in 6 cities across China - I can't think of a better way to see China than through the lens of ukulele! I'll share specific tour cities and dates in a separate post.

I will attempt to keep a Tour Diary through Patreon posts, and I will post on Instagram (follow me @cynthialinmusic) as internet/firewalls allow.

Also, Patron events for this month will shift a bit due to the tour so please check dates below, but we should be back on track next month.

Alfa Garcia

Hey everybody! I'm Alfa Garcia and I've been friend of Cynthia's for about a decade. I've been playing uke for eight years alongside some other instruments (piano, violin, guitar) and play a custom Mya-Moe uke tenor that was built by the talented Aaron Keim (something I discovered during LA Int'l Uke Fest last week!) Very excited to be part of the community. Not learning anything new at the moment, but looking forward to diving into some new songs with Cynthia's help. ;)

Kate G

Hi Everyone! My name is Kate. I am a new-ish patron...and a new-ish uke player. I started in June. I have a concert ukulele and have been working through Cynthia’s tutorials (just got to “Kiss the Girl.”) I’ll be at at least part of SF Uketoberfest and am excited to be joining the community—both on Patreon and in person!

Linda Dooley

Hi Cynthia! ... new $5 patron after having been a $1 patron for several months. I just NEEDED to get those chord charts sooner AND knew I’d love those “live” lessons. I’ve only been playing for a year. I started out with an Enya soprano, got an Eddie Finn cigar box for Christmas, and bought a Kala spalted maple concert. I just ordered a Luna High Tide tenor and my daughter in Shanghai just sent an Enya EUC-M6 for me but I can’t open it until Christmas. It is so beautiful, I can’t wait. I’ve just made an amazing mango wood wall rack to hang them all on. I’ve been working on all the recent lesson pieces and am LOVING them. THANK YOU FOR THIS GIFT TO US ALL!!

Christine G

Hi friends. I had to skip the live jams for a few months, so I’m excited about this week’s jam. I’m still at Confident Beginner level, but I enjoy plucking along and hearing from all the other players who post such great videos.

Christine G

Wasn’t that a great festival? Really enjoyed all the performers, workshops, and merchants. It’s always great to see Cynthia!

Bette Lou Fletcher

Hello everyone! My name is Bette Lou. I am a new patron and a new player. Learning to play music is on my bucket list...I am old enough to be on Medicare so time is a’wastin’!!! I have a BEAUTIFUL Ohana TK-75 Spuce w/ Maple tenor. Way too nice for someone who is only playing for three weeks. For the preceding year I have been fiddling around with a five string banjo. I have found that to be a lonely journey as I don’t know a single other banjo player. A friend told me she had an interest in ukulele and she knew of a club willing to take on beginners so I made the leap and commitment to take the uke on along with the banjo. I am looking forward to becoming a part of the Patreon community!

Greg Crandall

G’Day Everyone! My name is Greg and Sydney Australia is home. I’m a new patron and new ukulele player (both since September). Having a blast learning so much so quickly. There is a big festival in Newcastle (2 hours north of Sydney) in a few weeks with lots of workshops and performances (really looking forward to Honoka and Azita). I’m at a stage where my brain and my fingers just don’t cooperate with each other but they are getting better with each other in their own good time. Special thanks to Cynthia as it was her tutorials I first spotted and they have been loads of fun and very informative. Safe travels in China. Fascinating country. Cheers everyone!

Eugene Saw

Hey all, I'm Eugene. I've been playing for 7 months now and have learned 7 songs from Cynthia. I'm playing on a Makala soprano that was sitting on a shelf for a few years. Thank you, Cynthia, for making learning fun and simple!

Carlos and Stephanie Ramirez

Hi! I'm new! I'm Stephanie, from Florida. Omg!! So glad to be here!!! I am 51 and have been playing for six month! I have an Amahi concert and love it! I started with a Lanikai soprano pineapple and it's hard for me to play. Cynthia- I became a patreon because you make it so much easier to learn and you're just so kind and patient. Thank you for all your hard work!

Kendra Sibbernsen

Hi folks, I am Kendra and I bought a DIY ukulele kit for my birthday and made my own personalized design and have been playing for about a month. You can see the building process and result here: http://nearspacescience.com/near-space-ukulele/ I wanted to learn how to play at least one song really well and picked Can't Help Falling in Love, I searched and found Cynthia's teaching videos and thought they were wonderful. Since then, I've been working on Moon River and Landslide. I'm happy to be here.

Nicole D Millis

Hi started playing the Uke in June to give my brain something to do while recovering from a running injury! I love it, never successfully played anything... I feel very proud of the few songs I've learned. Currently playing a cherry red Fender Seaside:)

Aymeric Collart

I just discovered that I've been following and supporting you for months, but I had never introduced myself before! My only "direct contact" with you has been through the weekly live of Instagram. My name is Aymeric, I am French, but I live in Taiwan. I started playing ukulele when I entered the last year of my Master degree. I felt that I needed something else to do to relieve the pressure of research, but I needed something constructive (so watching Youtube videos wasn't good! ;) ), and above all positive. So I started with the cheapest ukelele I could find, and since I had kept playing for more than one month, I changed for a Kala-C concert. This ukulele has been my friend while I wrote my Master thesis. Then, I moved definitively to Taiwan for my PhD degree with a 4-year fellowship, so I wanted to celebrate all these good news. That's why I bought another ukulele from a Taiwanese brand, which is the Papa All Solid, tenor one. I have to admit it kind of became my new companion while I'm struggling with my PhD dissertation! :)

Cynthia Lin

welcome Aymeric! and good to see you here as well as on instagram. :) my parents live in Taiwan part of the year, so i'm sure to visit before too long. we can have a Taiwan Patron meetup!

Sandra Šustić

Thank you so much for the links upstairs. Yes it's hard a bit to get through the page and find what I need. I am Croatian, been living in Roma, IT most of my life. I had my first uke for my 43rd birthday in August. My family was tired seeing me watching your videos without having ever played any instrument... After less than a two months I'm able to play, strum, fingerpick and sing simple songs thanks to your tutorials. So it's never to late to start :) Unfortunatly in Rome I have found only one uke community quite distant from where I live but strangely on the other side I found that music stores have increased their offer so might be uke comunity is all to grow! I'm looking forward a Tenor, Concert one is quite small for me. I would do anything to find/buy ROXANNE chord chart Cynthias version so if anyone from Comunity could help me in this, I would be very grateful... Least but not last as we say in Roma, In bocca al lupo Cynthia for your China tour!

Shelley Rubzow

Hello Cynthia - my husband gave me my first uke a year ago on my birthday, a Makala Dolphin. I have never put it down and this year I am treating myself to a new one. The good folks at Tapestry Music in Vancouver, BC have ordered me a CK-14CL! I can't wait for it to arrive :-) My first lessons were with you via your free YouTube videos. Then I took a 10-week program from Ruby's Ukes, a ukulele school in Vancouver, BC. BTW Ruby puts on an annual festival in Vancouver, it would be great if you could attend as an instructor/performer. I like to practice trying to play along with the radio but mostly enjoy your tutorials. And playing Tom Petty & George Harrison music... Current song I’m working on is Paul McCartney’s Ukulele Version of “Something”. Keep up the inspiration, I joined your Patreon page because I think your good karma is worth supporting. My only question to you is where do you find the time to perform/create tutorials/post on patreon/etc/etc/etc...???

Theresa M

oops! my first comment was cut short. My name is Theresa I live in San Diego county, I got a uke about a year ago. Its a KALA, I don't know what type. How can I tell? I did take a beginner class for a couple months but that's all they offered. I started learning songs from youtube and that's how I found you. I have been practicing three little birds, brown eyed girl, stand by me, stairway to heaven, riptide, somewhere over the rainbow but not all that well. I figured it was time to take the next step. One is pay for your hard work and learn to play better.

Rich Montoya

Aloha Cynthia, great job on the filming of the Yellow video! Very well done! Safe travels to China, hoping holiday travel plans bring you back to the 808. Your last show at Kakaako was a great time! (shaka!)

Janice Collins

I'm born in Singapore and had been living in the US for the last 10 years. Last March 2017, I bought my first uke on Amazon, a Sobrano and its still one of my favorite uke (I have four now, three Sobranos and a Concerto). I like to call my "passion" my mid-life crisis but its so much more.. I used to work in a Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility and whenever I could, I'll bring my uke to play for the residents and they all loved. It had even helped some residents with mobility (the inresistible urge to tap along with the tune). Thank you.

Cynthia Lin

grazie Sandra! i just looked up In bocca al lupo - to which i am supposed to respond "crepi!". i think you'll have to teach some friends in Rome to play uke and make your own uke club. :)

Cynthia Lin

hi shelley! thanks for picking up a CL Signature Uke! i'd love to come to Vancouver, please do let Daphne know. :) the answer to your last question is, i'm a vampire and do not sleep... :) and i get help where i can and constantly try to streamline. as we say in hula, imua! move forward!

Cynthia Lin

hi theresa, welcome! look in the soundhole of the uke at the sticker for the model number, and look up online what the model number stands for. you can usually find out the size and wood type from the model number

Cynthia Lin

welcome Janice! hopefully you got to see Crazy Rich Asians, which was set in Singapore. nice reminder of home!

Rich Montoya

Awesome, looking forward to your next Island visit as I'm sure many others are. You probably have enough support here but if you need any assistance prior to coming or upon arrival feel free to reach out. I'd be happy to support this great community in any way I can. Aloha!
