Aloha Patrons!

I'm getting ready to embark on quite an adventure - my partner and furbabies and I are moving to Honolulu at the end of this week.  Moving is never easy, and uprooting to an island is especially daunting, but I'm excited to start a new journey.

Join me today for the last Beginner Live Jam from San Francisco (I'm teaching a beginner-friendly version of Prince's "Purple Rain").  After that, I'm giving myself a couple of weeks to settle into our new city before the next Patron live event - our monthly events will continue as scheduled on Pacific Time.  See below for our calendar of events for this month.

Thanks for all your well-wishes.  I look forward to sharing more from the Aloha State!

Welcome to May, and a warm welcome to all the new Patrons!  If you are a new Patron, please introduce yourself in the comments below.  Feel free to share how long you've been playing, what kind of uke you play, if you have an uke club to play with, what songs you've been working on. And if you've been a Patron for a while and want to share, please go ahead. This is a good place for your questions too - fellow Patrons, feel free to help me answer any newbie questions.

Thanks to all of you for directly supporting my work and for helping to create a powerful and positive online ukulele community.

A note for newbies - I know Patreon can be a bit hard to navigate. Please be patient and explore, and be sure to join our secret Patrons-Only Facebook group!  (email patronhelp@cynthialin.com with your facebook email address - more info in the Community Notes at the bottom of this post.)  Our community on facebook is active and supportive, and it's the best place to post any question you have about Patreon or ukulele.

April 2019 recap

In April, we kicked off the #100DaysofUkuleleSongs Project 2019, and it's been amazing and inspirational to see many of you from all over the globe sharing your videos!  (follow at @clukesquad on IG, and in our 100 Days of Uke facebook group)

Thanks to all the Patrons who tuned in for our 5th annual Beatles Jam (which was held April 14th in San Francisco and streamed online).  I posted three new play-along videos on YouTube, created from last year’s Beatles Jam footage:  "Come Together",  "Oh! Darling"., and "Love Me Do" (which features my harmonica skills!).

I had a blast playing Beatles numbers with my friends and bandmates Ukulenny, Abe Lagrimas, Jr., and Steven Espaniola  - and with hundreds of folks who joined us and strummed along!  If you missed the fun, you can re-view the livestream video on Facebook, by clicking on this link.

Aloha Cynthia and welcome to the 808! Look forward to having opportunities to participate in events that you hopefully will be hosting here like you did in the Bay Area! I'm sure you have plenty of support the logistics covered for your move, but if Lisa and I can be of any assistance don't hesitate to ask :) See you soon! Aloha.

Hi. I’m a new patron and my 8 year old, my husband, and I started learning six weeks ago, taking lessons as a family out of shared love for Steven Universe, and because my daughter didn’t want to take any music lessons alone. However, it turns out I am the fanatic. I’ve been working on The Lion Sleeps Tonight (and “Giant Woman” from Steven Universe). Cynthia’s videos quickly became my favorites! So grateful.

Tim Magnuson

Aloha... Good luck on the move! Just became a patron this week. Had seen your vids on YouTube, but didn't even think about Patreon. My bad. But we fixed that. Been playing guitar for over 50 yrs. My lovely wife took up uke 4 years ago, so, that means I took up uke... ;-) Still play it like a guitarist, though. Love your style and lessons. We'll get a lot out of them!

Cynthia Lin

welcome Colleen! i love the idea of the family music lesson. my dad took piano lessons with me when i started at age 6. i know a lot of other folks here got started because of their kids! check out our Patron Community Manager Jenny’s videos - she has shared a number of Steven Universe songs. she’s @newukenewyork

Cynthia Lin

welcome Tim! i also play uke like a guitarist (acoustic guitar was my main instrument til i went all-uke about 6 years ago), all styles welcome here.

Anya Smirnova

Aloha Cynthia and patreons! Anya here joining from London, UK. I started playing uke 2 months ago when my 5yo son was learning uke in a holiday strings club. He did not wish to continue, but I got hooked up on it :) Love your youtube lessons and have just joined your patreons community and learnt that you are moving to Hawaii. How exciting! Getting even closer to the uke roots! Good luck with the move and looking forward to more fun uke lessons

Hi Anya, I did the same when my grandson was learning to play at school. Now 3 or so years on I am a little Ukulele group, we practice each week in a local pub and do little gigs from time to time. Cythia’s You tube was such a discovery...she is an amazing teacher and I would never had even started this journey without her help...you will so enjoy the journey too...wow especially moving to Hawaii...all the best.

Paula Basehart

Ok let’s try this again, haha. I play Luna concert uke with a group of wonderful women ukelele players, we call ourselves, Sister Ulele, after a teacher at a catholic school one of us attended. Long story. Anyway, I am happy to be part of this patreon group. I live in a small (5,000) town in NE Washington state. Cynthia, I hope your move went smoothly for all your family members.

Scott Miller

I discovered your inspiring lessons online, and I now play with a group at the SF Golden Gate Senior Center. My spouse and I were fortunate to catch your last SF performance with friends at the PianoFight a few weeks ago. Love your music! You'll be missed in SF.

Erin Bender

Aloha Cynthia! I’m a new Patreon and new uke player! I live on O’ahu as well! Welcome to the island! You’ll love it! Perhaps you will hold live lessons here as well?

Amanda Matheson

I came to check for the monthly song vote. When is it usually uploaded?

Cynthia Lin

aloha eric! welcome! i think it’d be great to have our monthly live lessons in person on O’ahu. i’ll work out a venue once i’m more settled

Hi Cynthia, Thank you so much for your inspiring lessons! I have been learning from you since January of 2016 and became a patron in January of 2019 (wanted to become a patron in 2016, could not due to technical difficulties). I have mentioned your tutorials to many people. I learned of you through a gentleman in the Ukulele group I play with In New Hampshire. Thank you so much and am happy to here you are settling in to your new home!

John Gambel

Hi Cynthia, Sorry about the post above . I always hit the return key early. I am a relatively new partron. I have been playing for about 2 1/2 years. I generally play a Koaloha Low G tenor ukulele, but I also have a soprano and a high G tenor. I love them all. I play regularly with the Uku Annapolis group. We meet twice a month. I really appreciate how you break down a song for teaching purposes. I have learned a lot from you in a short time. My goal over the next year is to attend as many Ukulele festivals as I can afford and take the classes that are offered. Keep up the great job! Thank you!

Yoke

Hi Cynthia, I’m a new patron but have been following you on YouTube and Insta (printsnpatterns) for a while. I just learned Don’t Dream It’s Over thru your tutorial as it’s one of my favourite songs. Hope you’re settling in nicely in Hawaii.

Cynthia Lin

thanks for joining here, yoke! and thanks for supporting on insta, i definitely recognize your handle :)
