Aloha Patrons!

See you Thursday, May 23 at 4:30pm Pacific Time for our monthly Live Lesson- if you click on the video above, you’ll see a countdown for your timezone.

I'll teach our May vote winner, "The Girl From Ipanema" by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

PLEASE NOTE - I am creating this lesson for All Levels.  If you look at the chord chart, there are a lot of chords.  Don't be scared. :) I have easier alternate chord choices for some chords.  We'll use the basic island strum to start, so if you're a beginner and you're determined, you can definitely learn this song.   I'll also share a fun strum variation for the intro and an intermediate variation with muting.

Thanks, look forward to seeing you online!

xo cynthia.

My first time! So excited!!!

Eric Guerin

Missed the live jam but hit it later, it’s a fun one!

Maggie

Time vote: later (I’m in ohio) and I’m still good with later Bc it’s after dinner and kids bedtime! 😉

Maggie

Loved the song. Loved the lesson. We will do any more work on this in intermediate jam?

Robin Gonzalez

Fun and challenging lesson. I grew up hearing this song. I love it. Thanks!!

John Gambel

Hi Cynthia, I am from Annapolis, Maryland. I really enjoyed the challenge with this song plus it is such a great song. It is a great song for using the chord shapes up and down the fret board. Concerning the time I like the idea of later. It seems that the time always fell on our dinner time here on the East coast. Hope you enjoy your new home in Hawaii. Keep up the great job!

Trish Dyball

I loved it Cynthia. Had to do the lesson later but I love that style of song. The 6 week lessons really helped me to accept the challenges even though some of it was a bit out of my depth. Thank you so much. Tall and tan and not so young and lovely.......... I love the water and what is underneath. Such a joy to play this song.

John Gambel

Hi Cynthia, I play the song on both a low G and a high G. I think for this song I like the added high note for the boss nova sound of the song. Your thoughts?

Patricia Hurley

Hi Cynthia, later lessons would be great, thanks!

Dorain Jacobs

Love the song, love the lesson and totally love the view looking out your window!

Cynthia Lin

hi trish! thanks for the feedback about the 6 week classes helping you prepare for harder lessons. i'll keep that in mind.

Cynthia Lin

i think it works both ways and depends on what you like to hear, and what your specific instrument sounds like. :)

SONIA BARDES

SOOOOOO PERFECT !!! THANK YOU CYNTHIA <3

Franziska

I would love to see the advanced version of that song!

Mad4Uke Paris

Wow! I remember when this song was a hit. I loved it - being tall and sometimes tan and fantasising as a 10 year old that it could be about me - haha. Fast forward to the present- wasn't sure I could get that fancy strum down (rhythm not one of my strong points ). What a great surprise that it even resembles Jobim's big hit. Cynthia, you are amazing! Your lessons are so clear and simplified - even those of us without natural talent can feel proud. Blame it on the Bossa Nova but credit you, for the TLC you put into this tutorial and for sharing. A big Merci beaucoup from Paris. You are the best!

My favorite coffee-shop song. Thank you!

Maggie

Question: what key is this version in?

Theresa M

hi, can you please explain how the split goes using the extended bossa nova? dduudu for Dm and uduDD for the Db7?

Jenny Selig

It's been a while since I watched this lesson, but my reading of the way this is notated is that under Intermediate it says that on the split measures you're still doing one island strum per chord.

Theresa M

What about the chords in parenthesis, [Dm - Db7]?

Theresa M

Not the chords with the *

Jenny Selig

Exactly. The chords with the asterisk are different, with the second chord just getting the D D. I was answering about the split measures without asterisks.

Theresa M

I know, I'm asking about the split measures without the asterisk. In every split Cynthia plays half the split using half beat for each split cord. With the bossa nova I'm confused if she just uses the ddu udu for each chord. When I listen to her play it seems like she does ddu udu but the second cord I can't quite get it. Is she doing ddu udu or udu DD? I'm not very good at this so I'm sorry if I sound confusing. Thanks for your help.

Theresa M

Oh, I finally get what your saying. Thank you
