Aloha Patrons!

Welcome to August, and a warm welcome to all the new Patrons!  Thanks for joining us here, and thanks to all of you for directly supporting my work and for helping to create a powerful and positive online ukulele community!

If you are a new Patron, please introduce yourself in the comments below. Feel free to share how long you've been playing, what kind of uke you play, if you have an uke club to play with, what songs you've been working on. And if you've been a Patron for a while and want to share, please go ahead. This is a good place for questions too - fellow Patrons, feel free to help me answer any newbie questions.

A note for newbies - I know Patreon can be a bit hard to navigate. Please be patient and explore.  Some important resources:

  • Check out our New Patron Guide/FAQ post, and please comment there if you have a question that the FAQ doesn't answer
  • Be sure to join our secret Patrons-Only Facebook group  (email patronhelp@cynthialin.com with your Facebook email address - more info in the Community Notes at the bottom of this post.)  Our community on Facebook is active and supportive, and it's the best place to post any question you have about Patreon or ukulele.

July 2019 RECAP - San Francisco Uke Fest!

I am just getting back from an epic 3rd Annual San Francisco Uke Fest - I'm exhausted, elated, and already planning for next year!!  See lots of pics and videos from fellow Patrons in our secret Patron facebook group or on our @sfukejam instagram.  I got to see and meet a number of Patrons, including Chipper, Janice, Connie, Susie, Wendy, Valerie, Dan, Heidi, Shelley, Ed (let me know if i missed anyone!).  Can't wait to share our flash mob.  SF Uke Fest IV is coming in July 2020, and I will share details soon so that we can have a big Patron gathering next year.

New videos

In July, I posted three new videos.

  • I posted a play-along video for "Your Song," our June Patreon Vote winner. Watch it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/l3e4xZRysZ4
  • I also shared a play-along video for "Old Town Road," our July Beginner Lesson song. You can see that here.
  • Ukulenny and I collaborated on a play-along video for folks practicing Bruno Mars' "The Way You Are" for our SF Uke Jam Flash Mob. You can play along with both of us (and pick the part that interests you most) at this link.

More July 2019 News:

  • On July 19th, I released "Aquamarine," a new original song that I wrote on my ukulele at Kailua Beach on Oahu. Read more about it, and how to listen to it, in this post.
  • I hosted a Meet-and-Greet in Honolulu during the Ukulele Festival Hawaii, and got to meet a number of Patrons there. Thanks for coming, if you were able to drop by!
  • In our July Patron Live Lesson, I taught "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings. That lesson is now available to all Patrons. We worked more in-depth on skills using this song in the July Intermediate Jam ($20+ Patrons), as well.
  • I taught an arrangement of the Lil Nas X x Billy Ray Cyrus Remix of “Old Town Road" at our Beginner Jam ($10+ Patrons).
  • I had a blast with many Patrons and other ukulele performers and fans at this year's San Francisco Summer Uke Fest, from July 27 to 28, 2019.  If you attended, comment below to let me know what you thought. Be sure to check out the videos and photos attendees are sharing on Facebook and Instagram!

Aloha. I am Jenny, I live in Seattle, WA. I grew up in a small town on the North of Greece and have also lived and worked in the UK and France. I studied Computing in England and worked for many years as a software developer. I have always loved listening to music, especially alternative rock ("Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds" are my all-time favorite), but never had the chance to learn to play an instrument. I was diagnosed with very early-stage breast cancer in 2010 at a young age and went through some very painful treatments including chemotherapy. After my treatments we visited Maui in Hawaii with my husband and it was such a healing place, we fell in love with it and it became our favorite vacation spot. We still go there regularly and love Hawaiian culture, including the music. I thought I was done with cancer but unfortunately it came back in 2018 as a Stage IV bone metastasis. That news was too much to handle psychologically, I was very angry. I love sports and they help me let off steam, but during that period the doctors did not allow me to exercise at all (due also to a sports injury that happened around the same time) and I needed something to take my mind off my health problems. A psychiatrist recommended the Music Therapy class at Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle, and I gave it a shot. A Music Therapist was teaching the ukulele there and I went with my Mom, who was visiting me from Greece for support. In the beginning I found it very hard to learn to play an instrument as an adult, it was hard for my brain but I really enjoyed the challenge and it was a form of "active meditation", like the instructor said. My Mom noticed how happy it made me and that it improved my mood. I started going to class every Wednesday, getting more and more into the ukulele and enjoying the socializing with other cancer patients. We sang together and I found that very healing too. The hospital also provided a number of private classes with the Music Therapist, and those classes helped me too. We practiced and also recorded some private ukulele meditations for me to listen to. I found your YouTube videos early on, Cynthia, the basic ones on how to hold the ukulele, how to strum and later on about finger-picking Creep, and I realized I love the way you teach, you make it easier and more fun for beginners than any other online teacher and I also love your encouraging attitude and feel-good presence. At the Cancer Institute I learned the very basics with Betsy, our lovely Music Therapist. They have to stick to the basics because it's a walk-in class for all cancer patients - no experience required. After about a year I realized that the basics became too easy for me and I needed a bigger challenge, so I stopped going to that group. We had a small ukulele at home, the Soprano Lanikai LU-21 that my husband had been playing on and off, but I realized from the cancer classes that the Concert size was better for my fingers and easier to move through the strings. So I bought a Kala Concert KA-C which I read was a good beginner ukulele, and that's the one I'm playing now. I'm still a beginner, not an absolute beginner but still a beginner. I decided to become a Patron when I felt compelled to learn to play "Shallow" - even though it's above my level, I'm getting better at it with time and practice. I love tuning in to your Live sessions, they keep the learning exciting and alive and it's nice to interact with the community out there. I hope I will keep improving and will learn to play and sing some of my favorite songs. I hadn't realized that music was so much like math, with beautiful patterns. I'd like to get more into music theory too. I hope to meet you at some point Cynthia, maybe in Seattle or Maui. Mahalo!

Hi Cynthia, what can I say about SFUkeFest 2019? It was so much fun! I had never attended a Uke Festival and let me tell you it was worth the drive (from Canada 🇨🇦)! My husband came with me as a non-player but went home as a budding beginner uke player. He enjoyed UkuLenny’s pre’splosion lesson so much he’s hooked now. I enjoyed the master workshops and I can tell you many many lightbulbs came on from the sessions I attended. All those music theory piano lessons I took as a child and teenager finally clicked. I am eager to pursue this new knowledge to be a better player. The gala concert was a thrill - I practiced that GnR riff all the way home in the car. The talent of all the artists was truly amazing. Being from out of town, I appreciated the restaurant recommendations. We had breakfast at The Grove twice, and dinner at Pa’ina and both were great thank you. The only things I would do different next year is a) bring my music stand, and b) stay at a hotel in Japantown. We stayed at Yotel which was great, but the neighbourhood was a little sketchy. And I would try to use some superpowers to win one of those fab prizes. Thanks again Cynthia and the rest of the SF UkeFest team for all your hard work organizing a fun weekend. I’m planning to come next year.

Sandee Magliozzi

Cynthia - Came across a new song I love that I want to recommend for the beginner jam maybe for Sept. I’m guessing August might be too soon, but the chords and pace seem doable I can just never quite figure out the strum and/or fingerpicking pattern - is there a tutorial for that?

Sandee Magliozzi

opps - hit too soon. The song is Crowded Table by HighWomen AKA Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris, and Amanda Shires,

Hi Cynthia and fellow uke lovers! I am a new Patreon member and have been playing ukulele for over two years now, but, I am still learning! I am from Ottawa, Canada, we have several great uke clubs here or near Ottawa. The one I attend meets twice every month at a local pub, with an average attendance of 50-70 people, so much fun!! I saw you play, Cynthia, at the Lansing Michigan Uke fest two years ago and I attended a couple of your classes. I am learning to play Fire and Rain which you recently posted, I love that song! I hope to be able to play it and sing it at the right speed soon, I love the different strums. It sounds great! I am looking forward to the upcoming online jams in August. Aloha.

I'm sure more people are reading this post than those who are hearting it. I read it as an email and couldn't heart it. I looked it up on patreon to find a link where it was easy to heart.

Dimi Vasiliadis

Hi Cynthia, just wondering how much you will be selling your ukes (AUD) when you bring them on your tour?

Cynthia Lin

Cynthia Lin

Cynthia Lin

thanks Paula! i think you do have to click through to the web to see the heart at the bottom right of the post. no worries, thanks for reading!

Cynthia Lin

hi dimi! i will probably have folks order in USD, and it will be the list price of $179 (beginner model) or $449 (performance model) with a $70-$100 shipping/handling charge, as they will need to be shipped ahead of my travel. i’ll post more details in the Aussie Uke Squad. actually, perhaps you can help me receive the Sydney order, in you’re interested in a uke... :) i’ll message you!

Polyxeni

Thank you Cynthia, and do also let us know when you visit Maui, I might happen to be there.

Polyxeni

Γειά σου Ντίμι, do you speak Greek? I 'm Greek, I grew up in Greece and have lots of Greek relatives in Melbourne!

Dimi Vasiliadis

Annie

Hi Cynthia and fellow patrons! I'm Annie from the Bay Area, and have casually played on the Cordoba uke I got from Guitar Center years ago, but have only started learning more seriously this year. I had such a blast at SF Uke Fest and winning the Kala Bass Uke just made the day extra delightful and amazing 😊! Now I'm excited to learn how to play it, hehe! I'm a new patron and am blown away at the wealth of info here and have started diggin in to the You've Got a Friend tutorial. Looking forward to more uke playing and jams!

Simon Bedwell

Aloha! Joined a couple of months back but failed to introduce myself! Based just outside London, UK and have been playing Uke for nearly a year now. Loving the playalongs & tutorials.

Cynthia Lin

congrats, annie!! that was so awesome to see you win the Ubass! thanks for being here, and hope to see you at the next SF event. :)

Cynthia Lin

Hi Delinda! We're looking at July 24-26, 2020. I will keep the Patrons posted on our plans, really excited for next year's fest!

Rachelle Chong

Hi everyone. I picked up a uke at the house of a book club buddy and got hooked about a year ago. I played piano as a kid so the fact I can read music helps a lot. In my early months, I watched Cynthia’s YouTube Video lessons a lot and she was so encouraging and fun. Thumbs up! After 6 months, I decided to take lessons from Richard Michos at The Music Shop on West Portal. This helps me hone technique and learn music theory. Just recently I bravely joined the San Francisco Ukulele Rebellion group to learn to play with a group. (See the Meet up app to learn more about their twice monthly SF jam sessions.). In the first months, I performed twice with them at the Valencia Sunday Streets fair then the San Francisco Ukefest. That was terrifying and challenging but I learned so much through these experiences. The San Francisco Ukefest was fabulous fun. Thank you for the wonderful program ending with the amazing concert with the inspiring artists. Uke on!
