Aloha, Patrons!

Welcome to the New Year!!  I am excited for another year of musical exploration, creative growth, and community building with our Patron family in 2020.  Thank you for being here, and thank you for directly supporting my work and for helping to create a powerful and positive online ukulele community.

Share your uke/music goals for 2020

If youʻd like to share your uke and music goals for the year, please comment below.  Your comments might help your fellow Patrons identify their goals, and knowing your goals will  help me to plan my lessons and videos accordingly.  Folks on the facebook group (if youʻre new, see the bottom of this post for how to join) have mentioned fingerpicking, finding more time to practice, learning to improvise, and work towards memorization and performance.  Feel free to mention these things and anything else youʻd like to share!

Iʻd like to share 2 goals for Patreon this year.  First, Iʻd like to incorporate voice exercises and vocal technique into our monthly Patron events.  After my bout of laryngitis on Australia tour, itʻs become important to me to focus on vocal health and awareness.  Weʻll focus on controlled breathing, which is good for everyoneʻs health, and weʻll learn different scale exercises, which will also illuminate the basics of music theory.  Weʻll start with a dedicated online Voice Workshop on Saturday, January 25, so save the date if youʻre interested.  Iʻll share more details in a separate post.

Iʻd also like to get in a regular habit of professionally recording both the audio and video of our monthly Patron lessons for public release.  After this yearʻs move from San Francisco to Hawaii, itʻs taken me some time to re-establish my home studio set up.  I can share more about the behind-the-scenes of video and audio production with the Patrons, and maybe that will encourage more folks to join the 100 Days of Ukulele Songs project this year.

If you are a new Patron, welcome!  Please introduce yourself in the comments below.

Feel free to share how long you've been playing, what kind of uke you play, if you have an uke club to play with, what songs you've been working on. And if you've been a Patron for a while and want to share, please go ahead. This is a good place for questions too - fellow Patrons, feel free to help me answer any newbie questions.

A note for newbies - I know Patreon can be a bit hard to navigate. Please be patient and explore.  Some important resources:

  • Check out our New Patron Guide/FAQ post, and please comment there if you have a question that the FAQ doesn't answer.
  • Be sure to join our secret Patrons-Only Facebook group  (email patronhelp@cynthialin.com with your Facebook email address - more info in the Community Notes at the bottom of this post.)  Our community on Facebook is active and supportive, and it's the best place to post any question you have about Patreon or ukulele.
  • I also recommend downloading our CL Patron App, which has links to all my channels and resources (see Community Notes for links to download).

Meiju Luoma-Nirva

Hello, greetings from Finland! ❤️ Im a newbie. I joined to patrion yesterday 🙋 First of all, thanks to you Cynthia. I've been playing ukulele about 2 years now. With help of your videos i've been able to have motivation to practise. First song i learned was Stand by me. 😊 Now i can play a bunch of different songs and i've even been writing one of my own. I want to learn to find the correct strumming pattern for each song. Sometimes i find a song i like, but i can't figure out how to play it even if im familiar with the chords. I like music theory and i'd like to learn it more. And im really into singing! Someday i hope i have enough courage to join live jam sessions here in Finland. We have those every week. Now i just enjoy listening, but i really want to do more than that! So im interested in vocal lessons too ☺️ Love🙏❤️ Meiju

Rosemarie Watkins

I'm keeping my goal small and specific this year. I want to learn some Chuck Berry double stops to play for an intro and outro to *Run Run Rudolph*. Other than that, I find that if I just have fun learning new songs, I just incidentally pick up all kinds of skills I can apply to other songs. So, yeah, the *Rudoph* double stops and FUN are my goals!

Rosemarie Watkins

Meiju, I encourage you to sing. I'll bet you're better than you think you are! That said, I'm looking forward to Cynthia's vocal lessons this year.

Carol Schwartz

Hi. I’ve been a patron for quite a while and absolutely love it!! I live in Melbourne Australia and have yet to find a uke group to Joplin up with. Also, I’m not on Facebook - absolutely deliberately as I’m not a fan of their philosophy or ideology - so am not able to join in a lot of the chats that go on. I wish a new group would start on some other channel. I’m very excited to hear about the voice lessons. I’ve got a terrible voice and have actually been having some singing lessons as I think the ukelele is a perfect instrument to accompany singing. Really looking forward to 2020!! Thanks so much Cynthia. I think you’re a brilliant teacher the way you break down the music that we learn and the way you encourage the learning process. Brilliant!!

Jon F

This year I'd like to learn one good instrumental song that sound good on the uke, maybe Classical Gas or some other song that I don't know about yet. I also want to learn some Mexican strumming patterns and songs for my daughter-in-law who is expecting my first grandchild. And improve some more on Stairway to Heaven :-) Oh, and in general I want to learn just about every song you've ever taught because each lesson has some new skill to learn. I really enjoyed your latest lesson, Big Yellow Taxi, but I find that I say that every single month. Cynthia, have you been working on some original songs? I'd love to hear them!

Tina Johnson

This year I am going to perform with a band. Is there any problem with using your chord charts? Any chance of providing the chord chart for Blue Monday? The new Wonder Woman 1984 movie trailer features that song.

Wendy Kriegel

I'll try to do the 100 day challenge again! I'd like to do a ukulele festival again, preferably with Cynthia Lin if my schedule allows!

Patricia Lebreton

I'd like to perform more, both solo and with a small group. I performed one song as a duet for the first time in October, at a talent show at work. Related to that - I want to improve my singing (which is not bad but I would like to build strength and control) so I'm thrilled about the vocal emphasis this year, and I want to expand my repertoire of songs I feel comfortable performing. Longer term, I'd like to improve in blues, bluegrass, gypsy jazz, and traditional folk styles, and I'd like to write songs. I know some of your patrons ask for more contemporary music, but I'd love to go in the other direction and learn some great older tunes. I love your lessons and your generosity in sharing them with us Cynthia - thank you! I do have a Facebook account, but I haven't joined the Facebook community because I try to limit my interaction with social media; it sucks up too much time and energy. I live in Sydney. All the best for 2020!

Patricia Hurley

My first goal is to be more public with my playing - posting videos, joining a local club’s monthly jams and maybe even doing an open mic. I also want to learn more about music theory, and to become a better & more confident singer with my playing. And I want to go to the NYC retreat!

Maggie

Uke group goal: Getting ukes for kids in our local Nepali community for 2020 and establishing volunteers to help teach the kids. Personal uke: work on performance skills with attention to working on the microphone and finding my best vocal ranges. I have some spots in my vocal range I’d like to tweak. So the CL voice stuff in really interesting to me. (But, I might have one on one lessons this year to work on it.)

Maggie

Vocal class in January is during the Brown County Ukulele Festival- I’ll try my hardest to pull away and be LIVE for that class- I’m really interested! 👏🏻

TimmO

Hi Carol, I wanted to follow up on your FB-aversion. Me, too. I’m looking for ways to get away from FB. Besides their philosophy and business model, social media is not where I like to spend time, like Patricia said below. Do you have some suggestions of other alternative channels? Cheers, Tim

TimmO

My 2020 goals (3): 1. Learn how to solo (Ben Ahn was very inspiring) 2. Start playing with other instruments ... a trio?? (bass, percussion, guitar) 3. Focus on jazzier, blues -style arrangements. I have been playing for 5+ years; recently retired.

Carol Schwartz

Hi Tim. I tend to use more private channels for communication -Slack and Whatsapp (which i know is owned by Facebook) as they are much more private and the channel itself does not intrude at all on the communication. CYNTHIA does have a community tab which allows interactions but FB is promoted as the preferred channel.

Dave Thomas

It would be great to learn some picking and/or strumming exercises that I could do either as a warm-up or skill builder, in addition to the great songs we are learning.

Linda Lee Peacock

Have enough patience to learn how to left hand mute & to learn & use chord inversions

Linda Lee Peacock

Woops, hit send too fast. I also want to work on claw-hammer technique and get better at that. And to be better at chord melody playing. I like all genres of music, so it's hard for me to concentrate on one thing, to master any one thing.

Linda Lee Peacock

That said, just because I won't join FB, it doesn't mean that I don't accept that I'll miss out on some content from those who like and use FB. That's the way it goes.

Eric Guerin

My 2020 ukulele goals: Better mastery of the fretboard to solo / improvise, etc. and expanding to baritone ukulele - so memorizing the chord inversions to allow me to play on either baritone or standard ukulele tuning seamlessly.

David Brock

My 2020 goals are to firm up lots of the songs that I've played (for example in the 100 days challenge) into songs that I can do reasonably firmly from memory. So, even though I did the 100 days challenge (at a one-a-week level, which I'm continuing), I may actually cut that back in order to achieve this 2020 goal! But way too fun to drop completely!

Donna Grant

I'd like to try the 100 days challenge to overcoming my fear of soloing online. I want to become more confident of singing and am excited about Cynthia's vocal coaching. I want to improve skills by methodical practice - something I am not able to do in my bi-weekly uke jams with my community center group. I'd love to notation on the fretboard, and more fingerpicking.

Molly McCobb

Hi Cynthia and the entire community! I love the Uke goal setting theme. I’ve been playing my Ukulele now since August and have used your videos and chord chart religiously. I love the island strum and my goal for this year is to get better at picking. I really want to nail down the song, Shallow!! Thank you for creating this community and for making learning the Ukulele seem possible.

Ragna Viola Soennecken

Hi everyone, I'm a complete newbie, I just got my first Ukulele for my 30th birthday (Flight DUC323) and I absolutely love it already! I used to play clarinet when I was younger and dabbled with the guitar, so I have a fair bit of finger flexibility already. My main goal is to learn strumming patterns and improve my chord transitions so that I can play my first song on the Ukulele 😊

Renée Forsythe

My goal is to write a song and then play it out loud to others. That is two big goals, with vocal training part of the package!

Bianca Heidelberg

Besides getting better on the uke, I want to improve my singing, and I want to learn how to arrange songs and how to write my own songs.

Janice Lee

I find it very difficult to play and sing at the same time. I'd like to improve this but not sure how to go about it.

Janice Lee

Thank you, Jenny! I have seen this video before. Some songs I can easily sing but others I cannot. I think it depends on the beat/count. I rarely count when I play, just go by how I know the song, so adding words to the mix just throws me off!

DJ Aerne

Hello all .... I’m an intermediate uke player, looking to do more jazz / blues, and goals for this year are to learn how to memorize Cynthia’s fabulous arrangements, learn more strumming patterns, and do smoother chord transitions. Always looking to sing better, too.

Marion Tissot

My goal this year is to arrange my own version of the songs I want to sing... So being able to choose from a big "tool box" of strumming patterns and finger paterns the ones I find suit best the song. Adding little impro on top of that would be the best!

Jenny Selig

If people have ideas for platforms that would be well-suited to community engagement, feel free to post about it here! I see Carol mention Slack. And does WhatsApp have group function? Or just individual?

Ruth Gicqueau-Michel Simpson

Hi, I've been playing for about 3 months now and thanks to Cynthia's amazing teaching I've made good progress. For 2020 I'd like to learn more about soloing on the ukulele, perhaps using pentatonic scales of various kinds. I've learned a few shapes but would love Cynthia to give her take on them. Thanks!

Maritess Zurbano

We're new Patrons! My 9 year old child and I are LOVING playing Uke. we're trying to find the tutorial for "Happy" here. Someone please help us?Thanks in advance!!!!

Dina A Roosth

Hi. I'm very interested in focusing on fingerpicking lessons. I read somewhere (an email maybe?) about fingerpicking song suggestions. I would so love to learn the opening riff for Pure Prairie League's "Amie". It's nowhere to be found online. I suspect that people just don't want to tackle it. I have a friend who keeps asking me if I can learn it. He's very ill and I'd love to fulfill his request but I wouldn't know where to start on my own. Thanks!
