Aloha, Patrons!

A warm welcome to the many new Patrons who've just joined us! Please see the bottom of this post for notes on how to join our private Facebook group (the best place to get support and ask questions) and other helpful tips.

For this month's Live Lesson, I will teach 2 songs: "In My Life" by the Beatles + "Dance Monkey" by Tones and I

This month's vote stirred up lots of discussion about new vs old songs, wanting variety in our monthly songs, ideas for how to vary or alternate genres for our monthly vote, including the possibility of allowing me to choose the songs to maintain variety.  I hear you, and I thank you for all your input.  This community is a growing, living thing, and for me, leading a community of this size is a role that I have to learn.  I definitely need your help!

Next month, we will vote from a selection of current songs.  Beyond that, we can try different genres for the monthly vote.  There are so many great songs to learn, so I will do my best to keep the mix interesting and relevant.  I ask that everyone keeps an open mind about learning all kinds of music.

I want you all to know that constructive comments shared with aloha are always welcome.  Let's respect our community and our fellow Patrons - please comment with kindness.  We're all real people, and we can talk to each other as individuals who share a love for music.  I've learned a lot from reading your comments on the poll, and will keep those ideas in mind as we move forward.  I will try to do a better job of getting feedback from you all.  Please know that I try to do what is best for the community at large, but indeed it is impossible to make everyone happy (and as an idealist, it's something I have a hard time accepting).  The one thing that I can guarantee is that, for any song I teach, I will create an enjoyable arrangement for players of all levels.

"In My Life" was the poll winner, and it truly is one of my favorite songs.  I'm very happy to teach it, and I know it will make for a great lesson.  You can see my version of the song here., and I will teach an arrangement based on this version.

I also want to teach "Dance Monkey," because it is popular right now and we need something fun and upbeat, so this month we'll have a bonus song. :)  Watch the original here, I'm working on my own version to post as well.

I hope you'll join me for the Live Lesson for these 2 songs on Thursday, February 20 at 5:30PM Pacific Time.  Iʻll post the chord charts and lesson info tomorrow before the lesson.  You can find all Patron events on our Patron Google Calendar.

Patrons at the $5+ tiers can tune in for the Live Lessons. $3 Patrons will receive access the day after the Live broadcast. All Patrons will get access to the recorded lesson next month.  If you'd like to change your pledge and join us for the Live Lesson, click here for help on editing your pledge.  For tips on getting the most out of a Live Lesson, check out Patron Mark Pierce's Guest Post on the topic!

Next month: What are your suggestions for new songs?

For next month's vote, our choices will be new songs.  What does that mean exactly?  It's open to interpretation, but I'd loosely define it as any song that's hit the pop charts in the last year or two or is in the zeitgeist.  You can comment below, and you can also go back to the February 2020 Song Poll to keep commenting and up-voting your song suggestions for next month.  One of my current favorites is "Don't Start Now" by Dua Lipa.  Excited for fresh choices. :)

Look forward to seeing many of you online on Thursday!

xo cynthia.

Cool, never heard Dance Monkey, had to look it up, lol, but I like it. I'm all for exploring new and different music.

Franziska

How about "The Git Up" for next months vote?

Anya Smirnova

Aloha Cynthia. Good call re how to diversify songs!

Anya Smirnova

Love "Don't Start Now" by Dua Lipa! Am always amazed how you can do an uke arrangement of any style song.

Anya Smirnova

"Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi is a beautiful song

Anya Smirnova

"Before You Go" by Lewis Capaldi is another one

Britta Rey

I like those two songs. Looking forward to learning them ;-)

Kara

Looking forward to both! My nephews will be happy to hear some contemporary tunes.

Binh Alley (Lily)

Thanks so much Cythia. Love the 2 songs idea and love what you are doing for uke community. "Peace" out ;)

Abby Joslin

I'm excited to mix things up- I really appreciate the mixture of older and more contemporary music that gets taught in this community. Another angle that might be fun from time to time- it's Black History Month here in the US. What about featuring a selection of music to vote on by black musicians next year for that, or music by women for Women's History Month?

Allyn McColley

I seldom vote for the monthly song that actually wins, but I always end up loving the song chosen and the arrangement! Thanks so much for all your hard work, creativity, and talent Cynthia Lin. I can't imagine how you are able to put all of this together for us month after month!

Sue Schuster

all the hard work you do for all of us. When I met you in person at Mighty Uke Day in Lansing, MI I had only been playing for 3 months. Your kindness, patience and desire to share something you love radiated the entire weekend. All of the Aloha never dims with you and I think we all feel happier after one of your sessions. Playing the uke has certainly been good for my "brain and soul".

Sue Schuster

Oops Somehow the first part of my comment flew into mid-air it seems. I mentioned that the songs being taught this month will be fun to learn and then added my thanks to others for all the hard work you do.

John Michael North

I feel that this group should be for all ages and tastes in music. Having all new songs for next months vote does not do that.

Jon F

Thanks again Cynthia for all you do. "In My Life" is one of my top two songs (you know what was #1!) and I was so happy it's this month's lesson. Like some, I often skip voting because whatever wins, I end up liking whatever you teach us. I believe that variety is key to having an open mind. I'm hoping in the future one month's theme might be instrumentals for us shy singers... "Theme from Godfather", or "Classical Gas", or anything... Thanks for listening to us!

Shauna L

I'm so glad we are doing Dance Monkey too!

Becky Poteet

Please tell me how I can receive another copy of the lyrics and chords for My Girl?

Patsy Walker

Should be able to get it on her app. Or I’m sure you can find it n the Patreon site also

Kathryn Tamms

Am I missing the posting of the chord chart for the $3 patron tier? Where should I go to find it? Thank you!

Sandra Enns

Thanks so much even attemtping to keep all people happy lol! I'm excited to see what the next month's voting will be. I'd vote for "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi Thanks for asking and for all you do! <3

Bonnie Baker

Periodically it would be nice to do a vote from a selection of the runner up songs from the previous months. Those songs never seem to win but clearly are very popular with the voters.

Janet Amos

I don't see any voting for March or April on the google calendar or in the posts, am I missing something? In any case, my suggestions are I'm going down by Bruce Springsteen and Lover by Taylor Swift!

Jenny Selig

Hi, Janet (and anyone else wondering) -- the voting has been suspended for the time being. Read all about it in the March newsletter!
