Aloha, Patrons!

We've made it to September. Are the seasons changing where you live?

Welcome to our new Patrons and "Quarantine Newbies" aka "Qukes"!  Please read on below for newbie-specific info, and introduce yourself in the comments!

Thanks to all of you, new or not, for directly supporting my work and for helping to create a powerful and positive online ukulele community.  I also want to give a huge shoutout to our Community Managers, facebook group moderators, and regional Squad leaders who give their time and energy to support our Patron family and the wider ukulele community.  Leadership is how a community grows, so if you'd like to lead, go for it.  If you're not sure how to start, watch other leaders and imitate, and ask for help.  Feel free to comment here or in our private facebook group.

Thank you for all the support for In Waves!

As previewed last month, my trio U3 (me, Ukulenny, and Abe Lagrimas, Jr.) released our debut album In Waves on August 28th!  Have you given it a listen?

I'm still riding high on the cathartic "release" of a passion project that was 1.5 years in the making, and the sheer joy of being able to perform with my friends again during the Livestream Party (check it out if you missed it, our show at the "virtual Blue Note" made the Hawaii evening news!!).   I am so thankful for my Patrons, who are my biggest cheerleaders.  Your support gives me the confidence and the energy to keep pursuing my art, and I appreciate every stream, download, and word of encouragement!  Speaking of downloading, visit cynthialin.com to buy the digital album and pre-order CDs and vinyl. :)

September theme: the Harvest Moon

Watching the full moon rise last night, I started thinking of the Neil Young song "Harvest Moon," which I shared with Patrons last year.  I googled to find out that we're currently seeing the Corn Moon, and the next full moon is the Harvest Moon.  Which made me think that it would be fitting to play for the next livestream at the end of the month.  And then during tonight's 5@5 (my weekly Instagram live show), I flipped to a chart for Moondance just by chance!  The moon energy is too strong to resist.  Here are some other songs from the moon theme that I'm considering for our monthly livestream.  You can start reviewing to get in the lunar mood!

And I will teach "Dancing in the Moonlight" for our Beginner Jam Lesson next week.

Any other moon songs come to mind?  Comment below!  I'm thinking about what to teach for our Live Lesson and Intermediate Lesson, and would love to hear your thoughts.

I'll curate a songbook that we'll jam to together in our monthly CL x Ukulenny Community Livestream, which is now an official Patron-sponsored event.  Thank you for supporting our experiments with creating virtual community in a time of physical distancing!

New series: The Creator Chronicles

I'll be sharing more about this in a separate post, but here's a quick intro.  Patreon has invited me to become a Patreon Creator Ambassador and share some of the behind-the-scenes of my creator life.  I'll be creating a weekly video series to document the ups and downs of this unconventional career I've carved out for myself.  I hope that by sharing these stories, I can give insight to aspiring creators about this DIY artist's journey, and empower them to follow their passion, make the content they want to make, and use tools like Patreon to build a community around their passion.  I'll be posting on Instagram, you can follow at @cynthialinmusic if you like.

If you are an aspiring creator and have questions for me about my creator life, feel free to post them in the comments below, and I'll try to incorporate them into the video series.

Take good care, keep streaming In Waves, and I hope to see you online this month!

xo cynthia 🌺

I love the moon theme and I love your arrangement of this song! I am in Massachusetts, USA and was asked yesterday by a friend in Tasmania to repost my recording of your arrangement of "Harvest Moon" for the Harvest Moon coming up! It kind of blew me away. I was moved and touched as I don't share videos of me playing very often. Just goes to show the power music can have.

Eric Guerin

As for another moon song...maybe Blue Moon of Kentucky?

Annie

Yay! So happy you're going to be a Patreon Creator Ambassador! Your patreon is my favorite and I'm looking forward to seeing the behind the scenes of how you've been able to build such a large and sweet community. The beauty of DIY is it's so liberating to be able to do things your way...and at the same time frightening because there are no rules! I'd love to know how you've been able to structure your artistic journey over time ❤️.

Cynthia Lin

yay, thank you for posting this, annie! it’s exciting for me to start peeling this apart too - please keep the questions and feedback coming, it helps me to know what kind of creators are watching

Chelsea Tegtman

Hi I'm Chelsea I'm from Colorado and NEW here! I have been playing the ukulele for only a week but I have a piano/guitar background so I'm not a musical newbie. I learned how to play You Are My Sunshine for my 7 year old son tonight and he loved it. So much so he said "mommy this is so beautiful I feel tears coming to my eyes." I about died it was the cutest EVER. So, I plan on learning his favorite songs for him as well as my fav's too. Thank you so much for this community!

Carol Schwartz

Hi from Australia. Just want to thank Cynthia for being such a brilliant teacher. Also could someone please repost the song index? Mine has disappeared. Thanks so much and hope everyone stays safe and healthy in these crazy times.

Dorain Jacobs

I am looking forward to Dancing in the Moonlight!

Freed

Thanks for this comprehensive post -- so helpful! I've been playing since April and have attended as many events as I can and have enjoyed all of them. Like Chelsea, I have a musical background but it's been yeeeears since I've played an instrument. Part of the reason I started playing is that I have arthritis developing in my left hand & wanted to build up my hand strength, and it's definitely helping :D. As my hand strength and skills build, I'm excited to move into the more advanced lessons before long. I'm already compiling a list of songs to do for my 100 days project, but don't hold your breath; I'm no ready yet to jump into that. Thanks for creating this positive community, Cynthia, where so many diverse people come together and share their love and excitement for playing ukelele; being part of it brings me joy every day. Ooo -- and Banana Moon by Zoë Lewis is a lovely song.

Debbie

I don’t want to live on the moon.

Carmen

My suggestions are Magic Is the Moonlight by Rosemary Clooney and Neon Moon by Brooks and Dunn.

K.L.

Hi, I'm Kim and I've been playing for 2 years. I have a Kala Tenor solid spruce top cutaway I bought from a local shop. It's a very sweet, inspirational instrument. I'm originally from Ithaca Ny. I'm working on Shallow. What a vocal challenge!

Carol Schwartz

Could someone please post Cynthia’s song index? Thanks so much.

Jon stien

Ok this is stretch regarding the moon theme but bear with me. Moon->dark side of the moon -> Pink Floyd-> the song “wish you were here”. I admit I just really like the song and tutorial would be appreciated.

The link is in the post above, near the end, in Community Notes. It's #3.

Lisa Aman

Thank you Cynthia! ❤️

Lisa Aman

Hi my name is Lisa and I have a soprano ukulele and a concert ukulele, I find the concert ukulele is more comfortable for me to play and have been learning for a week and a half now 😊 thanks to you Cynthia! ❤️

Jerica Cates

Hahaha I just learned I am a Quke! Quarantine Newbie. Thank you for this Patreon Community.

Leslie M

Hello. My name is Leslie I too am a new Quke. I have a concert ukulele and have am a newbie. I have some guitar experience which has been helpful. Looking forward to being a part of this fun community.

Casey

HI all! I began playing a little over a month ago. I have a Cordoba 15SM soprano ukulele. I grew up playing the clarinet and saxophone but this is my first time with a string/ percussion instrument so it's been an adjustment. Cynthia I love your teaching style - every time I attempt to learn a new strum or song I feel like that I'll never be able to do that, but many island strums and chucking lessons later I feel so accomplished! Thank you for this site and your great content.

Marylee Fairbanks

hi .. I am new to all of this and there is a specific song I'd love to learn Can I pay to have this song done on tutorial?

Jenny Selig

Marylee, you can join the $50/mo Patron level "CUSTOM SONG & DEDICATION" and that gives you the option to choose a song after 12 months at that level.

Luisa

Hello, I am new to Patreon and I have been playing for about a year. I have a Populele which is a Ukulele with a fret board that lights up along with an app that teaches basic cords and simple songs. It was a gift from my husband about 2 years ago but i really started playing regularly about a year ago. My Ukulele is a concert size. I played along with the app for a while and then I found you on YouTube and learned so much more. Years ago i took guitar lessons but I gave up after about 2 years. I am so glad i found your channel, I have learned a ton since I found you on YouTube and look forward exploring Patreon to help me improve my skills.

Isobel92101

Hi. I am a Quke from San Diego and a real Newbie, without any past experience in music or instruments. But, does an ex husband, amazing guitar player musician count? Ahah I "play" a concert size Uke and I am having so much fun at sucking at that 😂 I got the uke during covid and now I want to improve a little, so that I can open at least a window while I practice 😳 😁 I downloaded the calendar and I will join the next session for beginners. Moon river is the song I would love to learn 😍🌙

Julie L.

Hi!! Im Julie from Kansas! I am definitely a Quke and a new member as well! Thank you Cynthia for being a great teacher! Just started playing a few months ago and i am loving it! Hoping to learn more in this community and also looking forward to meet new friends! 👋🏻😊 Stay safe, everyone! 💖

Lilia Celis

Hi! I’m Lily. I want to have a copy of Moon River lyrics & chords. Thank you.
