Aloha, Patrons!

In the spirit of creating more community connection and interaction (as I wrote about in my newsletter this month), and after the success of our Beginner Zoom Jam last week and positive feedback in our facebook group poll, I am happy to announce some changes to our Live Lesson this month.

  • Our January 2021 Live Lesson will be a Fingerpicking Bootcamp
  • We will meet Saturday 1/16 at 2pm Pacific instead of our usual Thursday time, to accommodate more Patrons attending live
  • In addition to the usual YouTube livestream, we will add interactive small-group social time for those who can join via Zoom.

I know that's a lot of new things - please read on for details.  Thanks in advance for your patience as we try out these new ways of using technology to build community.

Date change: Live Lesson is this Saturday, 1/16 at 2pm Pacific

This time was carefully chosen to maximize the number of Patrons who would be able to attend live.  Many Patrons have never been able to attend a Live Lesson in real time because they have been based on North American time.  If you cannot attend live, you can always watch the recording.  I know many of our UK/Europe Patrons are eager to attend live (without having to stay up past 2 am!).

Saturday start times for reference:

  • 12pm Hawaii
  • 2pm California
  • 5pm NYC
  • 10pm London
  • 11pm Berlin
  • 7am Tokyo (Sunday)
  • 9am Sydney (Sunday)

This month's lesson: Fingerpicking Bootcamp - All Levels

In our Fingerpicking Bootcamp, I will teach an accelerated review of the key patterns and techniques of fingerpicking, and we will use my most popular fingerpicking arrangements to practice those patterns and techniques.

Our monthly Live Lessons are always designed for All Levels.  I will cover the basics of fingerpicking at the start of the session, and share modifications and practice tips for beginners as we move into more challenging material.  I always encourage advanced players to use the review of basics to get more precise in their tone and rhythm.

Join the lesson via Zoom for interactive social time

We tried out the Zoom Breakout Rooms in last week's Beginner Jam, and it was so uplifting to see Patrons meeting each other, across the world and across the internet - one Patron said that it felt "real," and I feel the same way.  If you know how to use Zoom or want to give it a try, join the lesson via Zoom, and we'll spend time meeting our fellow Patrons.  I'm planning for social time as breaks in between our Bootcamp teaching sessions - for those watching on YouTube, we can do intros via the live chat.

If you're not familiar with Zoom, you can watch as usual via YouTube, and the recording will be available to replay on YouTube afterward, at your convenience.  Instructions for joining  via Zoom or YouTube are below.

Are you Zoom-savvy?

If are planning to attend, you have a good familiarity with Zoom, and you would consider helping me out as a co-host (watching the waiting room, helping to mute mics during playing, answering questions in the chat), please comment below!

How to Watch LIVE - Join the Zoom Room

1. Click here for the ZOOM LINK -- if you've never used Zoom before, it will download the meeting software for you and connect you to the meeting, so Zoom-newbies may want to test this out in advance of Saturday's session. The required password is built in to this link.

We will open the Waiting Room for the meeting about 15 minutes before the start.  We will try to let Zoom folks into the Room as early as we can to say hi and get settled before we start streaming to YouTube.  You can test your audio and video by using the buttons in the bottom left corner, and you can practice how to mute and unmute yourself.  During the lesson, we'll keep everyone muted, but during our social breaks, please unmute to say hello and introduce yourself!

TECH NOTE: you will need to manage getting into the Zoom meeting on your own - I can't provide tech support, but it's likely that you know someone who has used Zoom, so ask a tech-savvy friend or your fellow Patrons or search Google for help.  If Zoom doesn't work for you, you can always tune into the YouTube livestream (link below).

2. Note: Anyone who joins the Zoom meeting will potentially have their audio / video show up on screen in the Zoom meeting and on the recorded YouTube livestream.  This recording will not be public but will be viewable by Patrons who have the link.  If you don't want to be recorded, you can keep your video off.  If you'd like to turn on your video, it would be fun to see you!  And if you'd like to unmute and chat in between songs, try to be in a relatively quiet setting.

How to Watch on YouTube

Watch the livestream here: https://youtu.be/eel31B0_o8M. Log in to YouTube to join the live chat, and please say hello! I can't see who is watching unless you chat.

How to Watch Later

1. Watch the YT video linked above (it's the same as the live link).

2. Feel free to post your comments and questions below.

Thank you for hosting the lesson in a zoom session, Cynthia!! It was a lot of fun being able see and hear everyone!! The breakout sessions were amazing!

Regina Kohlmeyer

It was so useful and so much fun on Zoom today! Will you do another fingerpicking lesson next months? To teach more fingerpicking patterns (for 4/4 and 3/4 time). And: How to find an appropriate and matching picking pattern for a given song? How to master the transition from strumming a chorus and then immediately returning to fingerpicking in the verse. I would really appreciate that! Thank you.

Rene Kimray

Amazing lesson! I love how the lessons for fingerpicking were done in such easy-to-grasp chunks, and five songs was way more than I expected to leave with. (Also, thanks for hanging out with those of us who joined on YouTube.)

To those who were asking for the password, I'm curious -- how were you attempting to connect to Zoom? What device and browser? Via the Patron App or a Web Browser program? Just hoping to troubleshoot because the password was in the link and shouldn't have been required. Most people were able to just click and enter the waiting room, without being asked for a password.

Rachel McCrimmon

I just watched this lesson now and it was wonderful seeing all these people, and the tech issues actually just made it more fun and real. I wish i could have joined.

Couldn't join the zoom meeting, but took two days to follow the video. Great help. Especially with getting the notes clearer. Glad to hear everyone hates that B cord. Re the pinky strength..my old pipe major says his dad used to make him carry the water buckets to the animals with his pinkys to make his " burl" finger strong, Was a world champion bag piper, so I guess it works. Thank you for the bootcamp!
