Aloha, Patrons!

I'll see you tomorrow Thursday, March 18 at 5:30pm Pacific Time for our monthly Live Lesson.  If you click on the video above, you’ll see a countdown for your time zone. (Find all Patron events on our Patron Google calendar).

About this month's Live Lesson: 2 Disney songs!

In prepping for this month's Disney Jam on 3/27,  I asked for song requests from the Patrons and IG fans, and I got a lot of requests for "I See the Light" from Tangled.  I hadn't watched Tangled before (but now I'm caught up!), so I figured I would teach it so I can learn it as well. And since it's a duet, it's a good one for me and Lenny to sing together for the Disney Jam.  I'll teach a fingerpicking version, although we'll start with a strumming version for beginners.

I'm pairing this song with "You're Welcome" from Moana, which is fun and a "welcome" contrast to the Disney princess songs.  This song is tricky to sing - the composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (of Hamilton fame) uses unconventional songwriting techniques, which makes for interesting and challenging rhythms, and I'll elaborate more on that in the lesson.  He also loves to write raps, so I'll walk us through the timing of that rap section.  I guarantee you'll impress your kids / grandkids / pets when you get that rap section down. :)

And we'll warm up with a review of last month's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" (wow, that felt like ages ago, no?).

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

It's soooo fun Cynthia :D Thank you for those both songs ! :D I prefer for my voice to sing "Tangled" song with an G...D7....G instead of C (easier for me - lower-). Many xoxo from Paris :D and thank you for the all levels !! <3, and for the Disney songs with Lenny the aristocats are perfect for Jazz Songs as well ;D

Joanne Leilani Carpenter

You're Welcome was great too! Super fun! Thanks!

I See the Light - really good picking exercise on a beautiful song

Stefanie Oepen

I finally watched this. Considering I rarely used G7 and never played D7 or E7 before 'I see the light' it went well - until you picked up speed. ;) It is definitely do-able though and I really enjoy the picking. 'You're welcome' is fun and will help me get closer to beating Bb. I can play it OK if I play it alone, but getting there from any other chord is still hard. Anyway, thank you for this lesson! <3

Rachel McCrimmon

you're welcome was really fun, first time hearing it

Jenny Selig

You can always adapt songs by playing down strums. If you are talking about the picking on "I See the Light," you can try 1234 1234.

I forgot, Thank you for the Rainbow !!! :D
