Aloha, Patrons!

Today I'm sharing something new - Patreon invited me to swap lessons with chef Carla Lalli Music.  She taught me to make fresh pasta, and I taught her to play Purple Rain as her first ukulele lesson (one of her favorite songs, and one of mine too, but not an easy first song!).  Carla is a vibrant soul and eager student, and I think you'll really enjoy watching Carla tackle the challenges of playing her first chords and her first ukulele song.

Download the Chord Chart: You can download the free pdf chord chart attached to the bottom of this post to follow along with the lesson.  I've also taught a full-length Patreon Beginner lesson, more info on that below.  Please take a moment to click through to YouTube, drop a purple emoji 💜☂️, and leave a thumbs up and a comment to cheer Carla on.

My cooking show dreams come true

I LOVE cooking shows and have long dreamed of being on a cooking show.  For those who have been following me for a while, you might remember my coconut mochi recipe video as my first (and only) foray into making cooking videos.  So this lesson swap with Carla was a really cool experience for me.  I got to learn to make a fresh pasta dish from a professional chef, while shooting the lesson cooking show-style in my own kitchen.  The shooting part was actually quite complicated (three camera set-up, with Carla and the remote video team on Zoom), but I enjoyed all the behind-the-scenes action of the cooking show operation.

One day, I'll get back to making more cooking videos.  Thanks to Patreon for inviting me to be a part of this swap, and thanks to Carla for guiding me through my first time making fresh pasta!

Watch the Patreon Beginner Lesson for "Purple Rain"

Back in May 2019, I created a beginner-friendly arrangement of "Purple Rain" for our Beginner Live Jam.  "Purple Rain" is a rock ballad, so it's perfect for learning the extended rock strum.  We walk through the extended rock strum thoroughly in this lesson, so if you're still working on it, check out the lesson.

Beginner Live Jam tier Patrons ($10+) can access the recording of the full lesson here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/may-2019-live-by-26523136

If you haven't joined us at the Beginner Live Jam, you can upgrade for the month to check it out and get access to these lessons as well as our Beginner Live Jam Songbook.  You can change your pledge back whenever you like.  To edit your pledge, visit https://www.patreon.com/join/cynthialin

On Thursday, we have this month's Beginner Live Jam, and I'll teach a fun arrangement for "Save Your Tears" by The Weeknd.  Hope to see you there!

What a great lesson and terrific student!

Vanessa Causley

She was a super student, listened intently to everything Cynthia said. Well done to both of you !

Val Rocha

Dear Cinthya of all things I could ask... can you please share the band and model of the support where you keep your ukes?

Jenny Selig

Hi, Val. Cynthia has shared that she made that herself from a mic stand and some ukulele holders. Both can be found in most music stores or online.

Val Rocha

Thanks Jenny! I am not sure I'll be able to do one of those... But it is way more beautiful then the ones I see around... So, I may give it a try.

Linda Cline

If anyone is looking to make one of these, I used this mic stand (https://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Sound-MS-10C-All-Purpose-Chrome/dp/B00LLVVB2S) and several of these clamp uke holders (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MM69SV5/). I made mine a couple of years ago after seeing it in some of Cynthia's first videos from Hawaii, and it's held up very well for me. I also love taking one of those clamp uke holders with me to jams, because it'll clamp onto a table or music stand or chair (the clamp portion rotates).
