Aloha, Patrons!

Happy July!  Welcome to both long-time and new Patrons.  New Patrons, please see the resources later in this post for help getting started in our community.

U3 performance + our Rainbow Flashmob at 'Ukulele Festival Hawai'i - Sunday July 18

For those who are new, U3 is my trio with Abe Lagrimas, Jr. and Ukulenny.  After 18 months apart during the pandemic year where our only performance was a virtual album release concert for our debut album In Waves, U3 will finally be playing together in real life this month!!  If you've ever seen us perform together live, you know why I'm beyond excited - there's an energy when we come together that exceeds what each of us could do on our own.  Plus, they're my ukulele besties. 😊

We're honored to share our first official live performance as U3 at the 51st Annual 'Ukulele Festival Hawai'i.  Normally you'd have to come to Hawai'i to attend the Festival, but this year the Festival is a virtual event, streaming for free to the world - the performances will all be live from Hawai'i (with no audience), and will stream live on the 'Ukulele Festival Hawai'i YouTube channel. Be sure to subscribe!

The Festival will also debut our uke squad's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Flash Mob that many Patrons submitted videos for last month.  The schedule for the day hasn't been shared yet.  I will post details here when I have them.  It would be wonderful to have lots of Patrons in the chat for the Flash Mob premiere at the Festival, and the video will be available on my YouTube following the Festival.  Our Flash Mob editor Lien has really outdone herself (see more of her editing magic here).  I can't wait for you all to see it. 🌈

5@5 Update - YouTube replays and July/August break

In June, I experimented with moving my weekly live show 5@5 to YouTube (it originated on Instagram Live).  I appreciate the feedback that some folks prefer it on YouTube, and it does allow me more options for improved audio and video quality, but it is more work and more to juggle for a weekly event that was intended to be more casual.  I'm still deciding what I'll do going forward.  Perhaps I'll default to IG Live, and plan for YouTube 5@5s when I have a special guest.  I also have some ideas about improving the quality on IG Live.  If you want to support 5@5, please watch the 5@5 YouTube replays and leave a comment so I know folks are watching later.  It's an evolving project, like all creative projects.  Thank you to everyone who has tuned in and supported 5@5!

With U3 in town for the Festival and real-life productions gearing up again, my schedule this month is quite full with rehearsals and recording projects.  To make room for real-life activities, I think it's a good time to take a little break from 5@5 during July and August.  Stepping back can give me perspective on how I want to create next.  I've got new music in the works, and I look forward to having more time to focus on songwriting and music production.

My giant ukulele

I've also been reunited with this blast from the past - the inspiration for my signature ukulele!  When I moved to Hawai'i, I had left my guitar in San Francisco (cue Tony Bennett) with a musician friend, and it's finally made its way back to me.  It really is like riding a bike, all the old songs are still in my fingers.  Something feels full circle about this - that I've reached a level of comfort on the ukulele where I can and want to "code-switch" to guitar.

Do we have many guitar players among us?  I can create an official poll post if there's critical mass, but for now feel free to let me know in the comments if you have a guitar, your playing level, and how you feel about playing guitar vs ukulele.

Hope to see you for our live events this month!  And follow on IG and facebook for stories from the Festival!

xo cynthia 🌺

I was a guitar player for approximately 50 years until I injured my left shoulder in an accident. I then found playing guitar difficult and switched to ukulele which was easier and has been a lot of fun. I have started to play guitar again and would happily subscribe to a Cynthia guitar channel.

Ken (UKEn) Freestone

So many exciting things happening for you. Congratulations!!

Alicia Rae W

Hi Cynthia, I’m a new patreon member and glad to be here! I’ve been playing for about 5 years, with my Kala concert ukulele, and now trying to take my uke to the next level with your help. I also just got a guitar for my bday and would love some guitar tutorials from you as well!

CherylAoife

Thank you for all the wonderful outreach each month!

Allyn McColley

The last time I played guitar was when I was 20. I’m 64 now. I own a guitar. Thank goodness I bought a ukulele 5 years ago. So much easier, lighter, smaller. Lots of fun!

William Lloyd

This is Linda Lloyd. My husband and I are fairly new patrons. I’ve been playing for a little over a year and have been using the Daily Ukulele Song book as my go to tune book. My husband has been playing a bit longer and has picked up the ukulele quite quickly as he also plays the guitar. His primary love is the banjo and the mountain dulcimer. My primary instrument is the hammered dulcimer. We love to play the Ike’s because we love to sing together and we think it’s such a fun, social instrument. We are so grateful that. Friend told us about you as we love your lessons and all that you offer. Many thanks for all that you do.

Andrea

I started playing ukulele about 3 years ago as a (very!) mature beginner. It’s my first fretted instrument and I love it so much and find it enough of a challenge that I doubt I’ll ever take up the guitar. I’m also learning harp and clarinet… When I was a kid I learnt piano, recorders, and later flute, and have recently rediscovered my recorders and am currently enjoying playing a lot of early repertoire. Music kept me going through all the lockdowns over here last year and the 13 months of unemployment. Thank you for your wonderful learning resources, Cynthia!

Carolina Perez

I started to play the uke on January 2020...and I found you on youtube and started learning a lot of songs.Love your tutorials....I'm a patron since december 2020.Still don't know how to use the benefits of being a patron but I'll get there.Used to play the guitar in my youth..and still have one.

Michelle Peterson

I started playing ukulele when I was furloughed due to COVID - late March 2020? - just before I turned 62. Never learned to play anything before, and I wanted to learn to play an instrument before I died (I wasn't feeling too optimistic at the time), and thought uke would be easiest. But I got a guitar in late June 2020 and now the guitar is my primary instrument, ukulele is #2, and I just bought a mandolin! I also have a small keyboard, but haven't really learned how to play it. I finally got an in-person teacher who plays both ukulele and guitar.

Sonofrat

I think I found the post. I just didn't realize how to access this.

Sonofrat

My first instrument was the classical guitar. I switch back and forth. Some songs play better on the ukulele and some the guitar. I have two guitars and 4 ukuleles. I would say I am an advanced intermediate level player.

Holly W

I don't own a guitar but am planning to learn. If Cynthia will have tutorial for guitar lessons, I will for sure sign up as she is the best teacher.

Megan Bromley

I don't own a guitar, and I just got my ukulele in January of this year. I played clarinet when I was in school, so this is a huge switch lol. But, when I got my uke, my dad, who is in his 70s said that he always wanted to learn guitar. So I got him one. But he is too self conscious to play it. I would love to be able to send him your tutorials if you made them. You are the best teacher!

Peter Cridge

No guitar for me either. I have been playing the Uke for about 9 months, after owning one for a year previously after a trip to Hawaii. My wife hooked me up with some zoom lessons and I was off to the races . I love the tutorial videos and the community jams. Hoping to learn more by following along!

TimmO

I do own a guitar, and I tried to learn to play it (~1996-2007), but it never clicked for me. Then I started uke around 2014-15, and it felt totally comfortable and sympatico right away. My guitar substitute now is a baritone uke, and that is also coming along fine.

TimmO

Oh, and I should add that the ukes (concert, tenor, bari) have become part of my life, especially during lockdown b/c covid. I like the 4 string simplicity and the different sound qualities … in a way, it’s like a mandolin, a 4-string guitar (bari) and a hybrid (tenor).

GG

I am a new ukulele player. I started playing the guitar first starting March 2021. A friend suggested I try the uke and I didn’t think it a good idea to try another instrument so soon. They so lovingly gave me a ukulele and I was hooked immediately. I’ve been playing the uke for 2 months since May 2021. I love it so much. I have an Aolani Tenor Uke and a Taylor GSM Mini-E Koa Guitar. My guitar is being neglected but I pick it up every so often. I love Cynthia’s YT Channel and her singing along with the uke. That’s my goal… To sing and play without being embarrassed to sing :)

Greg Stannard

Yes Cynthia I AM a guitar player. I used to play it when I was supposed to be doing other things. Which is a skill that transfers well to the Uke, too! Still love the guitar and would love to mix that in with my uke, and my Ubass!!

Jacqueline McLaren

Yay! Cynthia I am a guitar player with four years experience learning rhythm jazz guitar. I would love to learn guitar with you. Your teaching style is gentle, clear, nicely paced and thorough.

Jacqueline McLaren

I’m so pleased you are reunited with your old friend, enjoy. I look forward to seeing you play the guitar and, hopefully, having you as a teacher🌺💕

CAROL GIBSON

I tried playing guitar years ago while I was in college and still have several--my husband's. I wish I'd discovered the Uke back then, but I only knew it from Tiny Tim and hated how that sounded. Never knew there is even a baritone uke that uses the same tuning. I know there's one of those in my future along with my 5 string tenor, tenor, low and high G ukes! As they say, a case of UAS!

Kathy Webster

Hi! I'm new here. I've always wanted to play the ukulele. Now that I am an empty nester, I have more time for me and decided it was time to start playing. I discovered you, Cynthia, when I was shopping for a uke and I bought your Ohana signature uke! I love it! You have been my only teacher so far and all I know I learned from you on youtube. I've been playing since March 2021. I enjoy playing I'm Yours, Brown Eyed Girl, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Somewhere Over the Rainbow and am working on Let It Be and Can't Help Falling in Love. I don't know anyone around me who plays uke. Playing brings me so much joy! Thank you for teaching on youtube! You have been so helpful to me!

Linda Lee Peacock

Yes, I have a guitar. I'm rusty at it and would like to pick it up again.

Rachel McCrimmon

I believe you could teach a rock to play music. If you are teaching guitar then i would give it a go.🪨👍

Kathy Friedman

I used to play the guitar and I miss it! Thanks to your tutorials I now understand how to read tab, so I’d like to give it another go

Heidi

So happy for you - you have your guitar back again! It’s like a mini reunion with an old friend and make music 🎶 😉. I started with classical guitar many years ago, but it got away from me as life went on. I just picked it up a few years ago and then found you and the ukulele - the uke has brought me much joy! I still pick up guitar every now and then but would love to learn from you, Cynthia - you’re a great teacher!

Heidi

You now have a matching set with your ukulele and guitar 😉🎶🤙

Ann E Kuehnel

That's beautiful! I do not play guitar or have any interest at this point to play anything other than CGEA tuning. I'm even afraid to try a baritone but who knows? Seems like my interests change and there's always more to learn!

Paula Armijo

I am a beginner guitar player and would LOVE to have some help from you, Cynthia! I have been looking online for someone with skills and awesomeness such as yours to help me improve my guitar playing skills, but so far I have not found that someone... Keep us posted!!! :)

Jess Chen

I received a guitar last year but have minimal made progress in learning it, in part because I did not have a Cynthia Lin guide the way I did with uke! I would definitely be interested in learning the CL way.

Tracy Kim

Hi, I joined today. I have been playing Ukulele for 18 months. I learnt by myself at home online with help from my Patreon mentors and youtube! I have only played by myself. I don't have any friends or family who play a musical instrument! So I really enjoy the interaction of playing along during livestreams. I have 8 Ukuleles, my 2 most played are my Enya Concert Ukulele and my Flight Pineapple Soprano Ukulele. Thank you for what I have learnt from you on youtube, happy to finally join here! Take care.

Matt

I have a guitar and changed to ukulele which seems a little bit easier to start. I am very interessted in some tutorials for guitar.

Ahil Ganesan

Hi Cynthia, Im new to the patron but glad i finally jumped in as ive been wanting to do it for yonks. Im from Syd, Aus, been playing since Feb last year when i first saw your tutes on youtube. Been loving it since and really happy to finally be a patreon. Many thanks, Ahil.

Ruth Farthing

I have a guitar and recently started playing it. It feels large. I have a baritone ukulele, so I know some strings and chords.

Alyssa Tate

I recently picked up the guitar. I'm way more comfortable with the uke but its fun to play both.

Holly W

Could we learn a Joni Mitchell's song, River, Both Sides Now, ...? Thanks.

Kathy Friedman

Would definitely be interested in guitar tutorials, I love your teaching style, learning the ukulele has gotten me interested in picking up the guitar again!

Jacqueline McLaren

I am a lapsed guitar player and would love, love, love to have you as my guitar teacher Cynthia.🌺💕
