This month's Live Lesson:  "Just the Two of Us" by Bill Withers

This classic song has made a comeback on TikTok, and for good reason.  It's got a funky groove and an enduring message (like so many Bill Withers' songs.  He is one of my favorite songwriters).

"Just the Two of Us" can be played with just 4 chords, so we'll start by learning the beginner version.  For the more experienced players, we'll work through the advanced variation, which has more challenging chords and a chord walkdown that sounds fancy (but isn't too hard once you learn the chord shape).  We'll also spend time on the rhythm of the funky strum.

We'll warm up with a review of "Linger," from last month's Live Lesson.

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

AMIR MB

Hello Cynthia, Is this song in key of F? I would like to try and add some harmonica jamming, Thank you, Amir

Jenny Selig

Good question! The internet tells me the original is in Fm, but this version from Cynthia isn't in the same key as the original. That said, when I plug these chords into a "what's my key" search engine, it says it may be in F or Dm. I wonder, too!

Victor (Vicalely)

Hi Cynthia Lin could you please make a chord chart for the songs blinding lights by the Weekend and circles by Post Malone, and Cool,Sucker and jealous by the Jonas brothers thanks.

Sherry McDaniels

Cynthia, I’ve only been playing 2 months but I SO appreciate the rhythm you incorporate into your arrangements. Thank you also for breaking everything down into small chunks! I really feel like I’ve accomplished something after practicing your arrangements! I also love how you include the suggested strumming patterns with the chord charts. Thanks again! 🎶🎸🎤🎵

Hello Cynthia, I do very appreciate your methodic way to teach: it's very useful to repeat the song you just showed us before, please keep this way of teaching, I progress so much! I'm a teacher too, but not in music, you do it very well, thanks for your job!

Rachel McCrimmon

This was great, thanks for another wonderful lesson! I really love the song choices.

SONIA BARDES

This is a super great song and thank you sooooo much for the advanced level !!!!! MaHaLo from Paris :D xoxoxo

Lynn Corin

Thank you SO much for this! Love the song and played the basic version at the UK Open MIc last night. Working on the advanced version now. Did I really just say that??? 😁 🎸 💗

Adriana Galeano

This is such a fun song! I’m working on the beginner version, but can’t help feeling like mine sounds like reggae lol, I’m trying to get my chucking just right. Not sure if I should try to increase the tempo.

Cynthia Lin

hi adriana! the reggae feel might mean that you are swinging the rhythm. i can explain more about that tomorrow in the new live lesson. speeding up and straightening out the rhythm can help - make all the strums even.

Judy Hartman

I wish you would revisit some of the songs you taught when you first started teaching online in 2014 or 2015...

Heather Hertzel

Hello! I don’t know if this chat is still monitored. I’m playing the extended strum, for verse 1 are “crystal” “beauty” and “sun” articulated with the chord change on the up strum (count 4&) or on the 1 count of the next measure (no strum here). I find myself wanting to do the former but I’m not sure that is right.

Jenny Selig

The short answer is that you don't have to play exactly what Cynthia does, so "right" is subjective -- playing it how it feels right to you is perfectly acceptable. On the playalong video Cynthia uploaded to YT, for example, the first verse is single strummed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxBvhh3pZCU,
