This month's Live Lesson: "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper

This song is a favorite of mine (you can find a guitar version on my 2nd album, doppelganger).  Someone requested it during 5@5 a couple of weeks ago, and I've had it in my head ever since.  It's been fun to adapt it to the ukulele (although I might still prefer the guitar version!).  Hear a preview in tonight's 5@5, it's the first song (and as a bonus, I played the guitar version at the end of the livestream).

You might notice that the rhythm of this song is similar to another Cyndi Lauper we've worked on, True Colors - watch the True Colors play-along here to refresh yourself of that arrangement, and review the Patreon lesson here.  I'm attaching it here so we can talk about the similarities during the lesson.

We'll warm up with a review of last month's lesson, "Take On Me."

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

How to Watch Live

1. Click on this direct link to the lesson: https://youtu.be/a-3E8VAXKv8

For those who are new, please note this is a private link, intended for Patrons only.

2. Log in to YouTube to join the live chat, and please say hello!  I can't see that you're watching unless you chat.  If you have trouble using chat on a mobile device/ tablet, you may want to try on a desktop or laptop browser.

3. Feel free to post your questions to me, or to the community.

How to Watch Later

Love all the lessons. It's amazing how you combine all levels. I am a beginner, but it's fun to be able to challenge myself to the next level. I would be thrilled if you decide to teach guitar sometime. My poor guitar sits neglected in the corner, but I'm sure with tuition from you, I would feel confident and inspired to play. You are such a great teacher Cynthia and explain everything very clearly. Thank you for all you do xo.

Regina Kohlmeyer

Dear Cynthia, thank you for this wonderful lesson! I have been "in despair" since you taught "Linger". I have been struggling with the 3-3-2-strum + singing, still impossible. Therefore, I appreciate your strategy to teach further songs (Time after time, True colours) with the same 3-3-2 rhythm! I think "Time after time" is still very challenging, but somehow a bit easier (because of the chord change, which gives the measure a better structure and because the lyrics seem to fall mainly on the stressed beats). And picking instead of strumming is helpful, too. I think, Cindy Lauper will open the door to the Cranberries ... one day. I like the concept to have a number of subsequent lessons on a similar topic to practice, apply and deepen the respective skills. Thank you.

I had to set the trecio beat down for a few months and when I came back, it clicked! Simultaneously singing also takes time. I can sing to Free Fallin (samw beat) but not Linger yet! Keep trying. :)

Maggie

Yes maybe guitar! I’d be pulled to come to those lessons if you started them.

Lynn Corin

Thanks you so much Cynthia. I've been off for a while as I injured my left thumb joint. So nice to get back but mustn't overdo it. I LOVED this lesson.

Kasia Rusiniak

You can teach guitar if you want, but *please don't stop* these ukulele lessons - I LOVE THEM!! :)

Erika

Tine After Time is really pushing me to up my game with faster chord transitions, picking, and the extra D d(u) in the strum pattern. It's really holding my interest! Long way to go, but I'm on it.

Heather Robinson

Love this song! I was doing so well with the tutorial until I got to the picking part and realised my Uke is high G and it sounds horrendous :(.

I don't know the difference between high and low c
