Aloha, Patrons!

New Patrons, please see the resources later in this post for help getting started in our community.  We're so happy to have you here!

Welcome all to September!  Hope you are well and safe and taking good care of yourself.  The pandemic roller coaster seems to keep on rolling - Hawai'i is facing its worst surge yet.  As we adapt to these on-going changes in life, I find it more important than ever to breathe and rest and let your expectations go of how life is supposed to be.  I'll write a little more below about what I learned during my recent "summer break."

Music is a wonderful teacher for learning how to be present and giving your full attention to the moment.  Remember that spending a little time with your ukulele is great for good for your brain and good for your soul.  Can you release yourself fully into the music?  If you need a dose of aloha, you might enjoy practicing with our livestream Community Jams. :)

5@5 is back on Instagram, and the importance of breaks

I took a break from my weekly livestream 5@5 during July and August in order to have more time for U3 video projects and to make space for new music and new inspiration.  (Also, August was my birthday month, which is a time of reset for me - check out photos of my birthday sushi cake!)  During June, I had moved 5@5 to YouTube, to experiment with the level of quality and the viewership I could get on that platform.  I wasn't completely satisfied with that transition and wanted to assess my next steps.

At the start of the break, my brain was flooded with new content ideas.  I had to resist the urge to immediately fill in the space I had made for myself.  We are all creatures of habit, and there's a satisfaction in busy-ness and "productivity."  It took me pretty much all of August to get used to the freedom of that space, to stop trying to fill it in.  The beauty of the pandemic is that we were all forced to be still.  The struggle now is that we supplanted our "old life" with a "digital life" that's far more difficult to disconnect from.  As a digital creator, there's always more that I could be doing - this is the mentality that I needed to step back from.

With the perspective of this space, I return with an appreciation for how much space I have.  And a desire to maintain that space.  I have creative freedom, and that is the greatest luxury I can imagine.  With that creative freedom, I can share my teaching and music and whatever else I decide to create to achieve my mission of a more creative, empowered, and compassionate world.  My Patron community provides both the financial support for my creative freedom, and the moral support and safe space to manifest this mission.  Thank you for choosing to be here and walk this journey with me!  If, in the future, you find me questioning which direction to go, remind me about the lesson of this break.

I've decided to bring 5@5 back to Instagram because it allows for more creative freedom and a more intimate connection with my community.  I originally started 5@5 as my performance "workshop" space, and I want to keep it that way.  Less tech, and a safer space for more risks and new ideas (YouTube live is a bit too public).  Last week's 5@5 with cellist Josh Nakazawa was a joy (watch the replay and skip past the first minute where the volume was too low) - you don't need an IG account to watch this replay.  If you are on IG, follow me @cynthialinmusic, and tune in live on Wednesdays at 5pm Pacific time.  For those not on IG, I'm considering options of how I can easily re-upload as an unlisted YouTube, or perhaps even stream to YouTube at the same time - again, less tech is the goal.  If folks have ideas, or want to help with the tech component, comment below.  We'll figure something out soon. :)

Have you given yourself any breaks this year?  What lessons have you learned from them?  Please feel free to share below.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our live Patron events this month!

Yours in creative freedom,

xo cynthia 🌺

Happy to join this community. Took up this interest when my kids bought me an Ukulele this Mother's Day and have been playing ever since on my kahua concert ukulele. Got started with your beginner lessons via YouTube and I really applaud the way you teach and on top of that, you have a beautiful voice. I have influenced many of my friends to learn how to play the Ukulele and direct them to your channel as well. I decided to join as a Patron in July this year. Now, I can't get by a day without touching the Ukulele. You are such an inspiration and it also helps to bring down my blood pressure 🤣. Sending my love from Singapore!

Yay! Yes, it is good to spend time for yourself and take a break. Or "vacation". Ironically I've taken a break from social media as well to play music with IRL friends. It is nice to not have to create 100 day videos but I'm kind of worried I will forget how to do them for next year. The trick is to find balance between doing the easy stuff and learning new things. BTW there is a way to livestream simultaneously on multiple platforms but I'm not sure which is the best way to do this.

Hi, I started playing uke around 3 weeks ago and been learning everyday since thanks to your youtube videos. I was a complete beginner, never having played any instrument before. I decided to pick one song I liked and learn to play it without any mistakes and it happened to be your tutorial for Ho Hey by the Lumineers. First few days were tough because I had a huge problem strumming and learning to play the island strum but I then watched your how to strum video and how to change chords and it helped a lot. After learning Ho Hey, I switched to Riptide since it's my fav song of all time for some reason and chucking gave me a huge headache but I practiced chucking for few days and finally got it - not perfectly but on an acceptable level. Now I am looking for a song with different strumming pattern and different chords so I can learn more songs. I tried Space Oddity and I learned just the break because it sounds cool but the rest is too hard yet. Anyway, since your teaching style works wonders for me, I decided to check out patron for some new stuff but I need to learn how to use it yet.

Ken (UKEn) Freestone

Glad you are feeling the benefits of your break. Although I haven’t been recording and posting as much, I have been still taking a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes every day to practice. My newest challenge is Spanish and arpeggios style with Marco Cirillo as well as your weekly tutorials and play along. I am loving “Just the Two of Us” and your version of “Rainbow Connection” has become one of my signature songs when I play publicly. Your instructions and guidance have given me more confidence to perform in public (International Festival, Play Music on the Porch Day, Busking Dowtown, and more) and now I am getting requests for teaching (only the very basics) and getting people engaged with the Aloha of the Ukulele. Thank you Cynthia and to our worldwide Uke family for the Aloha, Love and FUN!!

Jennifer Johnson

Wise words Cynthia. Do what is right for you, and it'll be right for us. You are a wonderful example for us all, with such amazing musicianship and your beautiful voice. You have inspired me, and now after several years I still go back to some of your earlier stuff and enjoy it all. Thank you.

Jeff Noll

I always enjoy your perspective. Thank you for sharing here with your Patreon family

Its interesting about feeling the need to fill free time and quiet space. And about the realization that so much more content can be added through digital means. While I very much was excited about, and appreciated all of the added ukulele digital programs, instruction, and entertainment by the many wonderful providers, I also felt a lot of stress that I might not be able to fit in something important. Even though I could go back and watch ukulele festivals and instruction that was recorded, I still felt that I might miss something or someone. There was so much. And of course add to that the 100 days. I don’

Whoops. To continue… I barely had time to fit it all in and sure don’t know how all of the ukulele artists managed it. Thank you and I’m glad you made time for yourself to take a break. I hope all of the rest of the artists did too!

Dee Greenberg

Cynthia! Thank you for this latest update and sharing your personal struggles. And that lovely photo of you airborne with ukulele in hand tells us everything about your attitude. For me the greatest gift has been the community you have created on FB. No easy feat! The 100 day project was like a life raft for me in 2021, helping me to stay connected to community despite the constant challenges created by the Covid Pandemic. I'm eternally grateful! Aloha! ❤

Greg Bernes

Aloha, I'm new here and returning to Ukulele. Years ago, i took some group lessons with Saichi Kawahara in San Francisco, But I still consider myself a beginner. I'm missing Aloha with the ongoing COVID restrictions, but looking forward to in person Uke Jams, when e can do that again. I would love to see more "Local"/Hawaiian content. Mahalo 🌺🌺🌺

Greg Stannard

Kudos Cynthia!! ❤️ On top of all your other skills, yours is a courageous message to share. It echoes what a lot of us feel, I’m sure. 💪

linda eisenberg

Being present and taking space for yourself - kudos! I'm wondering if this 100 day beginner lesson is on your site somewhere in one place or if it's catch as catch can with various songs (as I've been doing). If any of you oldies could assist....Love being a patreon and getting to visit with you every day, Cynthia!

Jacqueline McLaren

Aloha Lovely Cynthia🌺I’m so pleased you have had a restful and reflective break. During these grim times you are a delight. In Melbourne Australia we have been in lockdown for over 200 days, so the ukulele has been my little companion. Any chance of guitar tutorials?💕🌺💕

Amanda Crossland

Hi everyone! Hey Cynthia, I always love your newsletter updates 😍Just wanted to say thanks for including our Zoom open mic in there. Although it's billed as time friendly for the UK and EU, of course everyone is welcome and we've been delighted to have people joining us from as far away as Australia and Hawaii! It's such a fun and friendly event to be a part of, but sadly Saturday18th September will be the penultimate session, with one last blast planned for October before my Zoom subscription expires. So if you fancy having a go folks, be brave and come and join us 😁

linda eisenberg

No particular song- I can look that up, but just wondered if she had a "set/series" of the 100 days somewhere on her site that

Hello, is there a way to search all the beginner/intermediate posts/tutorials?

Ashley Steele

Hello Cynthia! I just joined this morning. I am a flight attendant who decided to take up the uke for something to do during very empty pandemic flights! I’ve been playing for 9 months. I just upgraded my uke to an Alvarez tenor that is electric. Currently working on “Bloom” by the Paper Kites and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” (your version with the kazoo ❤️…I’ll try searching for a tutorial once I learn to navigate this space.) if you don’t have a tutorial for “Bloom”, it would mean the world if you could come out with one soon because I’m not a fantastic singer but I can sing that song 😂 Planning a surprise mini-concert for my friend’s 50th birthday in December. I’m so excited to be here. Thank you for providing this great and inspirational community!! 💜

Robyn Syah

I have trouble also just to search a song tutorial

Jenny Selig

No, Linda, the 100 Days covers Cynthia posted do not correspond directly to a lesson series. Some of them she has taught (some with similar arrangements, others different) and some of them she has not. :)

Ashley Steele

Hi Jenny! I actually found it! Just hoping sue could do a tutorial on “Bloom”! It’s so pretty on the ukulele. There are some videos out there, but I’d love to see Cynthia’s creative spin on it, as well as the options she could provide ❤️

I decided to take virtual uke lessons via my local library last fall. I am 71, and haven't played an instrument since I played a little guitar in the '60s. I found Cynthia Lin on YouTube, and I was hooked! Her joy and enthusiasm is contagious, and she is such an amazing talent. I play a little every day now, and always with a smile on my face! Thank you so much!

Golden Pheasant

Hello from the UK. My wife and I have been usning your free lessons since about February this year. Took the plunge and joined Patreon. We find her lessons amazingly good. We are in small group of mainly newbies who, in general, are happy to strum and sing along. I can't help feeling that there is so much more that the uke has to offer so have come along to explore more deeply.

Nancy Krupiarz

I tried to vote for either of the classes but there is no where to click to accept my vote. What gives? I'm very eager to join your vocal class in Dec. Should I join the $30 tier yet?
