Aloha, Patrons!

New Patrons, please see the resources later in this post for help getting started in our community.  We're so happy to have you here!

Well, friends, it's October already, which means the holidays are around the corner 😮, and then comes The 100 Day Project in January 2022!! 😮😮  Before I get too caught up in future-planning, I'm reminding myself to take it slow, day by day, and breath by breath.  Still enjoying the creative space that I wrote about last month, and I've been steadily reacquainting myself with my guitar.  Tune in for tomorrow's 5@5 LIVE on instagram for a Joni Mitchell guitar arrangement that I've revived (after a decade-long hiatus, I think!).

Speaking of, I've heard quite a bit of feedback from folks interested in guitar lessons - I'm not sure how I want to approach it yet, but I'm letting the ideas brew, and I'm excited to see what will happen when I attempt to teach guitar from an ukulele perspective... I will keep you posted, and you can continue to voice your interest. :)

Prep for 100 Days - interested in a voice class?

I'd like to help folks prepare for this year's 100 Days of Ukulele Project, which is a free community creative project where participants post ukulele performance or practice videos for 100 days.  I was thinking that a foundational singing class might help folks feel more comfortable and confident in sharing videos.  Thoughts?  Voice is something that takes times to build, so I'd want to set up a longer class (maybe 6 weeks) before the end of the year.  Still developing the structure, so I'd love to hear your feedback.  Are there specific voice questions, struggles, or fears that might be limiting your ukulele/musical progress?  Feel free to comment below.

Stairway to Heaven review for Beginners

In last month's Beginner Live Jam, we reviewed Part 1 of Stairway to Heaven - there's a publicly accessible YouTube tutorial, but the live session can be a more motivating way to practice.  Folks were interested in continuing the review, so this Thursday at 5:30pm Pacific, we'll be covering Stairway to Heaven Part 2 in our Beginner Live Jam.  Please join us if you're interested!  This live session is available to $10+ Patrons, and you'll also get access to our Beginner Jam Songbook featuring 40+ songs.  To edit your pledge level, visit https://www.patreon.com/join/cynthialin and select your desired reward tier.  (Patreon will only charge you for the difference in the upgrade).  You can always edit your pledge back later.

For those who are curious, I am prepping for a special recording event of the whole Stairway to Heaven piece with a couple of amazing players here in Hawai'i.  Will share more when it's ready!

Hope to see many of you at our live Patron events this month!

xo cynthia 🌺

Holly W

Could we learn how to play "You are Somebody Else" by Flora Cash? Thanks.

Caitlyn

Jenny Selig has an arrangement of this, and includes it in her uke jam packet. You can find it on her site www.newukenewyork.com

Cande Carroll

A series of singing classes. Yes, please! I will participate! Cande in Cocoa Beach

Hayley Barber

Yes guitar lessons would be great!!!

Jenny Selig

Thanks, Caitlin. Holly, if you join one of my zoom jams cynthia mentions in this post I can go over it with you!

Aparna

Voice lessons and guitar lessons both sound great!!

Lorrie Quigg

I would love voice lessons -sign me up!

Bob Power

In re: "Voice lessons leading to more comfort with 100 days." Having done 4 zooms a week for 18 months and a few open-mics, I can't tell you how freaked out I get when I'm filming myself for flash mobs. Of course people would love voice lessons. But comfort in front of a camera? I think that's a different breed of cat and might be a really great session from some of your more experienced patrons (Jenny? for one thought) on: Getting comfortable with filming yourself. Or Getting comfortable with your iPhone. Or Setting up your mini-studio for the best results. Or How I got over my stage fright. Very best regards from OUJ

Adriana Yon

Guitar lessons from a ukulele perspective would be great! I've always wanted to play guitar. At this point, my only hesitation would be devoting time to learning guitar when it's time I could spend progressing on ukulele.

Elaine

Hello everybody - I'm a new Patreon member. I heard about play-along uke sites and found Cynthia Lin's songs and lessons. I am finding myself playing every day now on my friend's ukulele ( Kala (Ka-Cem model). It's hard to describe how excited I am to finally move past the regular strumming to incorporate funk and rock strumming patterns to the songs. Cynthia Lin's lessons are bringing true joy into my life. Its like a secret portal to joy!!!!!

Catherine Key

I would be interested in voice lessons. Playing ukulele has actually improved my singing a tiny bit naturally, but I have lots of room for improvement, lol!

Daniela AE

I am quite new to patreon and still catching up with all the great ukulele lessons and jams. Many thanks, Cynthia for that. I absolutely love singing and playing the ukulele, but I am not a naturally born singer, so it would be great to get some techniques for improving.

Birgit

Servus from Vienna, Austria, Europe! I‘m Birgit and have just started to play on my very new Ortega Earth Series CONCERT SIZE UKULELE in coal black. Thank you very much for your Beginner Tutorials! At the moment I learn your Intro to Tab: Happy Birthday. Because friends of mine asked me to play on their party on Saturday. Voice lessons - very welcome

jayne northcott

Are the UK friendly time extra beginner jams not restarting this month? We would be sad if not as it was great to be able to play at a live session.

Danielle Duggan

I would love singing lessons as I am far too embarrassed to sing in front of anyone except my children!

Terrie Connellan

Hi Cynthia, I'm a new patreon (?) and have just had my uke for less than 2 weeks. I'm brand new. Your free tutorials were so helpful that I joined up but am feeling a little overwhelmed by the patreon business. It will take me little time to navigate this. I have been learning songs like Stand By Me, Lean on Me, Your Song, You're so Vain, Lyin Eyes (I love the Eagles). I find stumming the hardest & have been following your tutorials. Thank you for the time you take to help newbies. Terrie from Australia 🖐

marion verhulsdonck

Morning (in the Netherlands) Cynthia. Since 2017 I'm a patreon and attending your uke lessons. I learned so much and I'm enjoying it ! The upcoming 100 days project is a good "stick behind the door" , encouragement to continue participating. I'm also thinking about learning to play guitar, but the size of the instrument and somewaht different chord shapes make me reluctant. Thought about buying a bariton uke because it resembles more a guitar, or a guitarlele. Your question about teaching guitar from a uke perspective sounds great to me. It is what i'm looking for. Also the voice lessons would be welcome, particular the combination of singing and playing. Looking forward for it ! Like your lessons and creations, it helps me to relax and set my mind to something different than work. Got me over my shyness for playing music and performing. So thank you for all that and looking forward for what is to come. Cordial regards from the Netherlands

CherylAoife

Another ''yes" for voice lessons!

Dina A Roosth

YES to voice lessons! Our neighborhood is having a "Follies" and I've been asked to play and sing in it. I can carry a tune but I'd love to strengthen my voice and learn about proper breathing while singing. Oh and maybe you could address stage fright as well??? hehe.

Dina A Roosth

Terrie, I love the Eagles as well. I've learned Tequila Sunrise, Take it Easy, Desperado, Take it to the limit and The Best of my Love. Welcome to this group. You'll learn so much!

Herbert Michael

That is a great idea, voice lessons, though I don’t know what would help mine :-))

Kathy Voth

I like the idea of voice lessons. I'm very reluctant to share videos of myself playing ukulele and maybe that would help me.

Jacqueline McLaren

Yes please also to guitar lessons Cynthia. Your teaching style is so clear and well paced. I would love, love, love for you be my guitar teacher ☺️🌺💕

Regina Kohlmeyer

Yes, voice lessons, please. I have very much appreciated the 100 Days group as a safe space to sing with any voice! However, one of my conclusions of the 100 Days was, that it would be very, very helpful to improve my singing.

Leslie Lindeman

YES PLEASE - a voice class(es) would be greatly appreciated!

Mary Faure

Voice lessons would be fantastic - I discovered your warm up exercises a little way in to the 100 Day Project last year and would watch and warm-up before I would record. It made me conscious of the individual note I was trying to reach. By watching and listening to myself, I'm recognising the areas I need to concentrate on and I'm slowing improving. I would like to strengthen my vocal and learn breathing techniques. I'm really enjoying your live lessons, especially how it is broken down and I can go back and practise each individual section that I need to work on- there is always a challenge to push me further with my music. Thank you. Mary

Linda Kenoyer

Voice lessons would be an answer to prayer for me! Hope we can start SOON!

Raya Ginzburg

Hello everyone, My name is Raya. I play guitar. I am a new patron and you are an amazing teacher! I started playing around a year ago and just bought my first ukulele (concert-size from Cort ). Right now I am working on your tutorial about "I Love You Baby" and i just love it, but I can not to find it right now :)) Voice class it is great idea! Thank you so much!

Suzanne Wu

Agreed about voice lessons, my voice is aging and I can't sing like I used to! I think vocal and breath exercises will help. Whatever you have!

Uly Nonesbane

New patron here. Just call me Uly. I grew up singing and played trumpet 🎺 when I was a kid. Picked up the uku about 2.5 years ago and the the bass about 1.5. I try to practice at least once a week. I find it difficult to play a rhythm and sing at the same time. Thanks for being the educator you are.

Tanja Maderner

New Patreon, my name is Tanja and I am from Austria living in Germany, playing for a few months now. Loving it. Playing every day, and it really pays of. Trying Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce right now but didn't find the right arrangement yet (also fitting to my voice ):-) Love all your arrangements and lessons, without it I surely wouldn't have made that much progress. Greetings from Germany

SUP 413

I would love a vocal series of lessons! When does the next 100 Days begin - end of January again?

Tiff Parker

I would love voice lessons and to join the 100 days challenge. :)

Casey

VOICE LESSONS YES PLEASE!

Janice Lee

Yes, voice lessons, please!

Mel

Hi I’m Mel and a New patreon. Grew up playing flute and a little keyboard. Bought a piano last year and am fiddling around with that. Have been playing uke on and off for about about 18 months. My uke is a concert Aiersi. Love your videos, Cynthia!

Jenny Selig

Hi! Typically we follow the calendar of the larger 100 Days Project, and they have not yet announced a start date, but that's our general expectation. Cynthia could decide to spin off on her own timeline, of course, but for now the thought is probably January -- no date yet.

Heather Wyman

Hello! I am Heather from Western Mass and I am a Patreon member for Ukulele Zen (Stuart Fuchs) who is a local-to-me namaste-focused artist and instructor I love to support. (https://stufuchs.com/free-tabs-goodies) I was introduced to Cynthia Lin when I was helping lead a local Uke club in town a few years ago, and there were strumming charts (!) and all of her music fit nicely on the page in legible-sized fonts. Then I found the tutorials!! I am finally putting my money where my music goes!

Claire Patterson

Hi! I’m Claire from Bend, OR and a new patron. My son gave me a Pono AC concert uke for my birthday and I’ve been playing for a little over a month. We have a weekly jam here in Bend and it’s really fun, but I find that I need some structured lessons. I found Cynthia’s tutorials on YouTube and they’ve been very helpful, so I thought I’d join. I’m looking forward to exploring Patreon and all that Cynthia offers.

Lisa Woll

Voice and guitar would be great! Your easy to follow arrangements and strumming are most helpful. I followed your you tube voice posts and practiced with them.

Cynthia Lin

thanks for sharing this, Bob. i think there's a strong connection between fear of sharing your voice and fear of being on camera. you do need to overcome that initial fear in order to start working on the voice. i will certainly incorporate this into some aspect of my voice teaching. let's break down those fears!

Cynthia Lin

welcome, Terrie! it does take a little while to get used to navigating Patreon, so take your time and be sure to join the fb group and post questions to get help. enjoy!

Cynthia Lin

welcome, Heather! Stu is great, I'm a fan. always important to keep it zen as well as aloha. :)

Greg Turner

Good evening, am relatively new to Patreon. I have been playing for about 7 or 8 months now, pretty much self and Cynthia taught (more Cynthia than self!), I have been learning various strumming patterns but find myself automatically reverting back to playing Island Strum as soon as I start singing, is this a common phenomenon that will fade with practise?? Or am I destined to only be able to sing songs if they can be played with Island strum??

Craig Meddings

Hi everyone. I’m Craig from Geelong, VIC, Australia. I’ve been learning ukulele for about 3 months but learnt guitar for 15 years when I was a teen, so have picked it up fairly quickly. I’m now 53. I have 2 Bondi Mahogany Ukuleles (a Concert and Tenor) both with built in tuner and pickup plus have just bought the Cynthia Lin Signature Performance Concert ukulele with built in tuner and pickup. It was the only one I could find in Australia. It’s being delivered this week and I’m so excited to get it! I love playing the ukulele and cannot believe how much happier I have been since learning to play. Thanks Cynthia for your videos. They’ve been invaluable help to me! I’d love to take part in one of your “Uke squad” videos one day. I love the one you did with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Craig - Geelong, Victoria, Australia
