This month's Live Lesson: "Tennessee Whiskey"

"Tennessee Whiskey" is a classic country song that became a crossover hit recently when Chris Stapleton released his epic version.  The beauty of this song, and of many songs in this country blues style, is that there are very few chords.  So the focus of the song is all about rhythm, riffs, and attitude.

We'll go over the riffs I've tabbed out, and talk about ways to embellish the song and find the groove.  We'll also spend a little time covering the vocals of this song - with a simple 2 chord progression, there's a lot of room for the voice.  I'll share some tips for getting started with this style of vocal delivery.

We'll warm up with a review of last month's lesson, "Time After Time."   Practice with the play-along here.

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

Great arrangement and lesson. I didn't know the song, so I've taken a deep dive into various artists' covers of it, as well as how it's performed by Dean Dillon, who co-wrote it. Nobody sings the song the song the same way, so that really reinforces what Cynthia said about making the song your own by interpreting it with emotion. If you consider yourself "not a singer," you might like to listen to the cover by actor Harry Dean Stanton. It's very simple and sweet, and unpolished -- very different from the famous version by Christ Stapleton, and almost sounds like a completely different song, but it's so charming. Enjoy!

Finally got to take the lesson. I really love the riffs. I can’t wait to practice it more. With the riffs and song I can see how I will be able to play with it and improvise. Thank yo once again.
