This month's Live Lesson: "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley

Let's start with a review of last month's lesson: "Hanalei Moon" in 2 keys.

I arranged and recorded "Redemption Song" for my first 100 Days Project back in 2015, and the recording was eventually included on my Ukulele Days album.  You can watch my 100 Days version, which now has CC chords and lyrics so that you can use it to play along.

It feels fitting to share this song to honor the Juneteenth holiday here in the US.  You'll find a variety of produced versions of this song - here's the solo Bob Marley version that inspired my arrangement, especially the rhythm on the bridge, which I'll explain in the lesson.  The chords are relatively beginner-friendly, so the focus is on the rhythm and strum accents.  I've also provided the tab for both low G and high G.  I look forward to sharing this meaningful song of freedom.

Join our Pre-Lesson Zoom Social

If you're free before the lesson begins and would like to meet and chat with other Patrons on Zoom, join me before class for a Zoom Social from 2:00 to 2:25pm.  (We'll end the Zoom before the lesson, and still go to YouTube for the lesson).  For new Patrons, you can meet Patrons and ask questions.  For longtime Patrons, you can get to know your fellow Patrons a bit more.  Talk about your ukes, share the songs you're currently working on, and connect with fellow Patrons from across the world.  It will be casual, you can drop in anytime, and we'll use the Zoom breakout rooms to move into smaller groups for chatting.  Click here to go to the Zoom Social, or use Meeting ID: 876 1498 3301, Passcode: aloha.

Please comment if you're planning to join the Zoom Social, or you're interested in helping out with more Zoom Socials in the future.  Hope to see you there!

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

These lessons keep me from losing my mind in these crazy making times! I really appreciate that you offer variations that are easier and more intricate so we can all get some success and some challenge.

I am so happy we did this song. Thank you for the low g and high g tab. Those bridge variations are so fun and challenging!
