This month's Live Lesson: "Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell
Let's start with a review of last month's lesson: "Hotel California" by The Eagles
First, I hope you've seen the recent viral video of Joni performing at the Newport Folk Festival. It's moving on so many levels, so much so that I finally felt ready to tackle this song.
Joni is one of my heroes, and I always want to do right by her songs. Which is to say, I wanted to give it my own interpretation, just as she has re-interpreted this iconic song many times over her career.
You'll see I wrote WIP (work in progress) on the chord chart, because this is the arrangement I'm feeling right now, but I know it needs some time and development. That's something that I'll get from sharing it with you all.
I'll walk us through the different arrangement ideas that I have going on, and share options for how to play it depending on your level. I tested out the arrangements in 5@5 over the past few weeks, so take a look there if you're curious to hear it! Hope you'll join me to explore this legendary song.
**updated 9/28 with the final chord chart with video link

Join our Pre-Lesson Zoom Social
If you're free before the lesson begins and would like to meet and chat with other Patrons on Zoom, join me before class for a Zoom Social from 2:00 to 2:25pm. (We'll end the Zoom before the lesson, and still go to YouTube for the lesson). For new Patrons, you can meet Patrons and ask questions. For longtime Patrons, you can get to know your fellow Patrons a bit more. Talk about your ukes, share the songs you're currently working on, and connect with fellow Patrons from across the world. It will be casual, you can drop in anytime, and we'll use the Zoom breakout rooms to move into smaller groups for chatting. Click here to go to the Zoom Social, or use Meeting ID: 876 1498 3301, Passcode: aloha.
Please comment if you're planning to join the Zoom Social, or you're interested in helping out with more Zoom Socials in the future. Hope to see you there!
A note about our monthly Live Lessons
My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.
I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)
