Aloha, Patrons!

Hope you are enjoying your August so far!  I'm a little slow on the newsletter this month - still gathering myself after a busy month of travel, Uke-Splosion, and the Aquamarine and Hotel California video releases in July.  More about all that below!

I've noticed that lots of folks are traveling - have you taken your uke with you to any exciting (or not so exciting) destinations?  Have you had any remarkable experiences playing uke in the wild?  Please share in the comments, I'd love to hear updates from your ukulele and creative life.

A special welcome to all the New Patrons who've recently joined us!  Which video brought you in?  Please introduce yourself in the comments: I'd love to hear how long you've been playing, what kind of uke you play, if you have a group to play with, what songs you've been working on, or anything else you'd like to share. There's a lot of info here on Patreon (I'm working on some better materials to help guide new Patrons), so take some time to look around, check out our Welcome Guide / FAQ post, and learn to use the Cynthia Lin Song Index to find lessons and videos.  For help, join our Patron-only Facebook group (be sure to answer BOTH membership questions) or share a post on the Community tab here on Patreon. See the bottom of this post for more resources to get started in our community.   We're so happy to have you here!

Summer Uke-Splosion recap!

Summer Uke-Splosion marked my first (and maybe only) show on the road this year (although there are 2023 tour plans in the works!! where should we go?? stay tuned, Patrons will be the first to hear ☺️).  It was pure joy to reunite with U3, and thanks to all the Patrons who joined us for our hotel jam, our VIP event at Hotel VIA, the Uke-Splosion concert, and the after-party hosted by Aloha Uke Squad.

Here's our group champagne toast at Hotel VIA!  Shoutout to our SF "cool mom" and Patron Frankie (upper far right of this pic) who organized the event for us.  This was such a sweet night.  I look forward to more of these chill, intimate pre-show hangs - I'll put the word out for hosts when we solidify tour dates!

And, we didn't get the whole group, but here's a pic from our after-party with Aloha Uke Squad.  For those who took the Intro to Hula workshop, there's Uncle Allen on the right!  The Aloha Uke Squad performed for us, Uncle Allen danced, Patrons got to connect, and it was the perfect way to unwind from the Uke-Splosion show.

We need a way to share group pics/vids for Patron events (outside of the Patron Facebook group, although you're welcome to share there).  Perhaps a shared Google photo album?  If anyone has ideas for this or want to help manage it, let me know.

I'm working on Joni Mitchell for our Live Lesson this month. Watch last week's 5@5 to hear my work-in-progress!  It's the 2nd song in the set, you can use the chapter markers to skip straight to it.  I often test out new song arrangements in my weekly 5@5 show, tune in every Wednesday on my LIVE channel.

Thanks for reading, for being here, for supporting my journey and for sharing yours. 🧡

SUGGESTIONS for your 2023 tour .. The Britt in Jacksonville OR, or anywhere in Ashland, Oregon

Jan C

We’d love to welcome you back to Australia. (Melbourne or regional Vic - Bendigo? Ballarat?)

Chris Smith

I have been recovering from back surgery and consequently have been spending some quality time with my uke. I so loved Hotel California. There was so much to learn in that one video that it’s keeping me busy for a while. Love you teaching girl!

Greg Stannard

Omg Cynthia: “Both Sides Now.” 😮 Of course I LOVE Joni Mitchell, and have heard tons of your songs over these years. But THAT one there? No joke that is one powerful emotional punch, the way you do that song... 🥊 Congratulations. Wow.

AlohaTikiBird

Hotel California brought me in. Excellent for a mid-level beginner, like myself, and has so much potential to add more flare—finger picking, solo parts, as well as other instrumentation with friends. This is a good one to work on for a bit, put down and comeback to as my skill level increases. Mahalo for sharing!

Mary Jane Wisniewski

If you come to Northern California, come to The Strum Shop in Roseville California! I’m sure Dan Elliott could make that happen! 🤩😎😍🥰😘

Mary Jane Wisniewski

I took my Uke to Maui in July. I also took two Ukes camping in the Sierra Nevada forest by a lake, where we played and sang by campfire. I’m camping again, now at Bodega Dunes, Sonoma coast beaches in California. I’m hoping for some more campfire jamming

Shelley Rubzow

We went to Maui & Waikiki in July as well. We brought my husband's Kala Waterman Concert uke. I flew home on Jul.18 and he left on Jul.23 to sail back from Kauai to Vancouver on a 40ft sailboat with a couple of friends. He has been practicing some simple songs on the trip. I hope someone took some video or at least a photo of him with his uke in the middle of the Pacific! He won't be home for another week. It takes a long time to cross an ocean on a small boat yikes!

Cynthia Lin

hi carol! do you have any connections to the britt or to oregon shakes in ashland? always helps if you know someone. :) thanks!

Fawn Spady

I’ve so missed my Uke classes with you Cynthia. But I’ve taken my Uke everywhere and even played with our extended family at our family retreat last week. I hope to jump back in this month. I’m been traveling a working on a special project creating a family dramatic podcast with music (classical not Uke, inspired by a popular book, Curve of Time. Here’s the link if anyone is interested is listening. There will be 9 episodes total. 3 are up now and the 4th should be up this week. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/curve-of-time-podcast/id1633329225.

My ukulele and I took a road trip to Vermont so I could strum by the green mountains ! lovely !

CAROL GIBSON

I absolutely love that you put your own spin on others' songs. And I really love the beautiful, haunting picking pattern you're using for"Both Sides Now"! Just gorgeous! Can't wait to learn this one. She's a favorite of mine too.

Sandra Uechi

Hello. Can someone tell me how to save chord charts on ForScore app? Newbie to app.

Jo Ann Wong

Played Put Your Records On with my husband accompanying on his electric guitar a couple of weeks ago and played Don’t Worry with my grandson Bjorn when my son and family were here from Denmark. Hoping to see the videos they made. Bjorn and I played three years ago in Maui and another time two years earlier. Would love to post! He’s 16 now and grown to 6’3”!

kris ronningen-fenrich

Love your version of Put Your Records On that you played at 5@5 Live Aug 3. Please share the "strumming" technique that you used during the intro and verse. Thanks!

Will Jaynes

Newbie, here. Borrowed a uke from a friend and told myself if I actually played with it every day for 30 days that I'd buy one. 30 days, and last week I bought a beautiful Cordoba tenor with a low G string. Loved it at first strum. So far I've spent a lot of time on the Harvest Moon lesson.

Cecile Tue

Hi from France! I took my concert Ohana CL with your signature and a cigar-box during my trip to my mother (I have 5 ukes now, a big family!); I played above all outside, near a pond , with the birds on the water , they sing with me. I like playing in the nature.

Cynthia Lin

i don't use the app, but i know folks have talked about this in the Patron facebook group, if you can check that out

Cynthia Lin

aloha, Will! welcome! good for you for sticking with it, playing music provides a lifetime of fulfillment

Suzanne Boulay

I love your lessons and uke tips! Do you think that a tutorial for the combination of Over the Rainbow and a Wonderful World would ever be a possibility? Just hoping :)

Randy Jones

So much great stuff here! New player, using a Makaio Tenor that travels with me almost everywhere. Working on Banana Pancakes now. Earlier this month I was playing it in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Deadwood, and finally sitting on the bank of the Mississippi River in central Illinois. Playing and your lessons help take the stress out of a very difficult job, thank you so much!

Sassy

Hello from the Netherlands! A little late, but I hadn't had the chance to look around properly yet. I'm a newbie since 4 months. I started with a concert, but continued on a soprano because it felt more comfortable with my short fingers. I usually have zero patience for learning new things, but I'm actually really enjoying it. 🧡

Randy Jones

This is such a great resource! Newbie, my tenor travels with me almost always and my favorite so far was playing a couple old folk songs on the bank of the Mississippi. I've been struggling for weeks on Banana Pancakes but I'll get there!

Kathy Casey

Hello! Newbie here, I've been playing since April and joined your patreon a couple of weeks ago - I found you on youtube. There are so many great song tabs and tutorials... thank you! I try to take my uku everywhere I can, I think the most exciting was backpacking, it was worth the extra weight :)
