This month's Live Lesson: "Hey Jude" by The Beatles

Let's review last month's lesson "Flowers" at the top of the session.

As I posted in my 100 Days video, my parents requested "Hey Jude" for the upcoming Taipei show.  We've played "Hey Jude" in the Beatles Jam, and I've recorded it with my San Francisco class for the video play-along, but I have yet to teach it to Patrons.  So let's all practice it together. :)

My arrangement has a few fast (and fun) chord change riffs.  If you haven't checked out the Beginner Mindful Uke series, this month we focused on Mindful Chord Transitions, and we'll apply those techniques to this song.  The extended rock strum is always worth a review, and we can definitely rock out and head-bang at the end of this song.  We'll apply some metronome work to this song next week in Intermediate Jam, where I'll cover my "performance prep" for this song.

I'm thinking this could be a good flash mob song for a 100 Days finale project this year.  Next month, I'll teach the vocals for "Hey Jude" in my Voice Workshop so folks can focus wholly on the singing part.  It makes a huge difference to practice singing separate than playing-while-singing.  I even create a separate vocal score and metronome practice track.  Hope you'll join us!

*After the Lesson: Open Mic - Submit a Video, Share your Progress*

You are invited to practice this song and record a short video to share. This is not a competition - your goal is to do your best, for whatever level you are at.

How to submit:

  • record our lesson song (a verse or short section is fine, doesn't need to be the whole song)
  • upload to your platform of choice (some options: your own YouTube channel, shareable drive like Google or Box or Dropbox, shareable photo album like Google photos or iCloud)
  • post the link to the video in the comments on this post (don't worry if the link doesn't work, I'll copy and paste it)
  • I'll watch as many videos as I can, and I may show your video in class (if you're opposed to this, please say that in the video).
  • one video per person per month

Look forward to seeing your videos!  Over time, it will be cool to track your progress from month to month. This is a new experiment, open to your ideas of how to make the sharing easier.

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

I look forward to seeing you online!

xo cynthia

SONIA BARDES

Hello Cynthia, Thank you for this lesson :D and thank you for the lintermediate level even in this lesson.. I have a question : do you think to create another level for the advanced ones every month ?? Are we enough for that level as I could be ? I started few years ago as a beginner and now, i feel more confortable to be with advanced ones... I am already with the intermediate ones...Thank you for your response :D ALOHA from Paris since many years.

Cynthia Lin

hi sonia! i'm interested in that idea, and i know you're an accomplished player and have been asking for more advanced lessons. :) could you tell me what kind of techniques or topics or song selections you're thinking of for advanced? are you interested in a more "performance" level tier?

Maggie

OHH, "performance level" seems really interesting as opposed to just "advanced"... That's a really interesting idea. I like it

SONIA BARDES

Dear Cynthia, Thank you for your response, your interest and especially for considering a higher level of instruction. I would love to go to the next level in terms of chords. Learn more complex things in rhythms too. I like all the songs you do, I have a medium voice so I do what I can but that doesn't stop me from learning what you give us. To give you a concrete example : "Santa Claus is coming' to town" was in 2 versions (for beginners at first and then you made a Jazz version with more complex chords) and well I took a lot of pleasure to work the second version :D (and I liked your video a lot). I always hoped you would do jazz versions of Christmas songs. Another example: "Christmas time is here" is a bit more complex in terms of chords and it's much nicer to hear for me of course. I worked a lot on "Stars Fell on Alabama" too. That's the level I need to be in today to not get bored (I want to be honest with you). There may be several of us like that, and I don't want to change teachers because the level is not adapted to me anymore.... I am very attached to you so I prefer to tell you. I studied at the conservatory of piano, solfeggio and singing, for several years (6 years), I do theater and directing and today I am in the voice over. Playing ukulele and singing with you clears my head, I love the way you work and how I progress. It's thanks to you that today I play at this level and every day I play between 1 and 2 hours depending on my possibilities. Thank you for your listening, help and for your suggestions ! I hope we will have this new higher level with you the best teacher ! All my best thoughts from Paris ALOHA xoxo

Cynthia Lin

we can certainly cover complex chords and rhythms. i love jazz, and we can dive deeper in that direction as well!

Caroline

Can I upload practice videos already on Hey Jude?

Caroline

When is the deadline?

SONIA BARDES

Thank you so much for your response Cynthia :D So happy to read your good news :D Take care and best wishes :D

Jenny Selig
