{Patron-only post}

Aloha, Patrons!

Well, it finally officially happened. The Eagles' copyright police have blocked my Hotel California video on YouTube.  But guess what?  Now you can watch it right here!

Patreon has a new native video feature, so here's the perfect opportunity to test it out.  This video will be for Patrons only while I figure out next steps.  This video doesn't have the play-along chords and lyrics - how important is that to you?  Please let me know in the comments, and it will help me know how to modify this version if needed for the next upload.

Watch "Hotel Calfornia": for Patrons only, play the video at the top of this post.  And please share your feedback for how well this native Patreon video works.  Can you cast it?  How's the quality and sound?  Do you prefer it, since it has no ads?

Learn this arrangement: All Patrons (pay what you can, $1+) have access to the full hour lesson of this song.  Thank you to my Patron community for supporting this video and lesson!  Please note that the playthrough at the end of the lesson has been muted for copyright.  We can work on uploading this lesson as well, if the native video can support it properly.

Download the Chord Chart + Watch the Full Lesson (all Patrons, $1+): https://www.patreon.com/posts/69320083

Learn the Outro: when you want to level up from this lesson and rock out on the Outro section, check out our Intermediate workshop on The Art of Muting, where I share in-depth practice strategies and exercises for developing your muting skills.

Watch "The Art of Muting" Workshop (Intermediate tier, $20+): https://www.patreon.com/posts/july-2022-live-69640886

I also have plans to upload this song to digital streaming platforms, because the copyright license for recorded music is more straight-forward.  So stay tuned! (I'm happy to pay for use of copywritten material, but the current system for video sync licensing is complicated and requires lawyers and separate contracts for each song.  If anyone has expertise on this and can help, please let me know!)

Thanks for all your support, and I look forward to your feedback!

Video works great, haven't tried to cast it. Also because there's a lesson for it then it isn't such a hardship that lyrics/chords aren't there. Watch the lesson then watch this. Or just watch this. It is nice not having ads but then again that isn't the end of the world.

Jim Roth

Well that’s a bummer. Glad we can still see it here. I was just starting to learn this one and have it on my YouTube library. Oh well. To answer one of your questions, the chords and lyrics always make more enjoyable if possible.

Julie Heath

It is such a nice video but I would also say it is nice to have the play along features, if possible (chords and lyrics). They are not essential, though.

Cynthia Lin

thanks, Jim! chords and lyrics are a good educational tool, so it makes sense to create a version with those additions.

Dianne C Jewett

I enjoy playing this exciting song with you. Hope you can get the cords on the video for those who haven't tried it yet.

Greg Turner

Ha Ha you have to be easy going with The Eagles or next they won't let you listen to their music ! I have heard of them and she now regularly busks. She's great

Craig Walsh

I am currently working on this great lesson and I'm grateful for what I can still get. I completely understand the lawyers' point of view, though; if you let a bunch of ukulele players play Eagles' songs around the campfire for free, where will it all end?

Steven Winget

As of noon (PDT) today (July 30) I had no problem accessing your lesson version on YouTube.

STEPHANIE MCLAUGHLIN

Sounds great Cynthia! So glad you found a way to maneuver around the legal roadblocks! If there's a will, there's a way! No big deal not having the music because I have it since I am one of your Patreons! I always have a printed copy of the sheet music next to me when I am watching your lesson videos anyway! Aloha & Mahalo for doing this!

Sabine

Hey Cynthia, the video works well. Quality and sound is very good. You can use automatic subtitles. This may be an option for the lyrics.

Susan Hobbs-Adediran

I really enjoyed watching you perform this iconic song, and was grooving along with you! I am always so happy to not have ads. I've done the lesson and have my own copy of chords and lyrics, but as I improve a song I enjoy playing along with you, so chords and lyrics on screen are a bonus. I'll definitely be revisiting this with my uke tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration Cynthia

kris ronningen-fenrich

Love this song and your version. Thanks for figuring out a way for us to play along. Hey, this will force us to learn the chords and not always rely on the on-screen prompts...

Michael McKinney

Hi Cynthia, I know that I am a bit strange, but I just don't like this song. However the video played fine and looked great full screen on a 32" monitor. Really nice to see native video capabilities on Patreon.

Terry Brandsma

Audio and video are both excellent for me. The auto-closed captioning is a bit questionable in spots - see "... some dance to remember, some dance to forget ..." (at 2:05)

Terry Brandsma

AND, I just realized that the "shadow" on that fretboard is the Golden Gate Bridge! Nice!

Maureen Wood

I could not cast per se like I do with YouTube but I could do a smart view mirror from my samsung.

Heidi

Hi Cynthia! The playback using this format is great. I was wondering about ability to change playback speed and it can be changed using the gear icon (just like in YouTube). I also was able to set the closed caption to “on” and the lyrics displayed! So I think this format should work well for most people. I appreciate your diligence in making sure your Patrons are taken care of! 🤗💕🌺🎶

Heidi

More info…The “gear” icon is not face up; you have to tap the video once, and the screen is darkened. You will find the gear icon at the top right. This is also where you can select CC Closed Caption for the lyrics. I was also able to cast it from my iPad to my Samsung TV after entering a code. YAAY!

Silvana Gomez

Hi Cynthia. I'm gutted about this. I don't understand why your video is wrong and the rest of covers are not affected? In any case, the video plays well here. I learnt this song and have been perfecting it for the past 2 years. I was a beginner and decided to throw myself into it. I have even twitched the fingerpicking intro. Thank you for your beautiful work. I met you at GNUF (I was with my 11 year old daughter who loved your kazoo) and I have since enrolled your vocal lessons...just I have not managed to attend...I also have your sweet child of mine version on repeat in my Spotify.

Carol Owens

Heidi, thanks for the “more info” for the rest of us!

Carol Owens

If anything the audio is better. I’ll grab AirPods or headset, listen again Monday. Love the sound of this ukulele for one thing and another it is perfect for this number. YES, it does sound better here than YouTube! I need to work on my own strumming…and this inspires me to get with it. Never mind YouTube. I’d be happy if all future music for this site lands here.

Jennifer Johnson

A flawless performance Cynthia, and this has prompted me to give this song another go. The uke sounds great and your voice is beautiful. I think this platform will be fine. Thank you for everything. 💗

Paula Stern

Great quality and beautifully done!

Fran Cooper

This is fantastic. Great playback. I don't need the play along chords since I have printed out your arrangement. Thank you for this!

Kathy Meyerson

Incredible! I love how you sing and play this, and "yes" it does sound perfect on this platform. Our ukulele group "Ukestra" in Spokane WA ends most of our gigs and jams with this song because our co-leader loves to play the intro and outro.

SONIA BARDES

PERFECT :D thank you Cynthia :D

Josie B

Sound is perfect and goes well with your beautiful voice! I love ❤️ it!

Holly W

There are so many HC covers and tutorials on youtube. Why is this happening to yours?

CJ

Hello Cynthia and Fellow Ukers: This was the very first song that I really really learned properly and rocked it out; my granddaughter thought Nana was a rock star when I played it for her. I haven't played it yet this week and would have been stunned to see it wasn't on YT but so happy to see it available on Patreon. It's the best version of this song, by far, that I've found anywhere and your tutorial and playalong are great, even for a self-taught senior like me. Keep on uke-ing !! Mahalo. CJ

Janice Collins

Love the tone on that Tyde Music Uke and especially that SF inlay!! Your rendition is effortless and flawless. I love it!!

Andrea Voon

I am brand spanking new here and struggling with strumming so chords and lyrics on screen is a definitely helpful. I love that I can slow playback because my brain works at .75 🤣. The video quality is excellent on here better than YouTube. Love your videos and have been working hard on your the Lumineers Ho Hey.

Jnoah

So sad😢😢 that it was taken down but I’m glad that i can still see it on here;)

Vanda Kay

Fabulous arrangement, Cynthia! Sound and video quality great. Thank you!

Djuna B

It´s amazing Cynthia! I am very glad I can see and hear this here. I love it!!!

Maureen

Sounds awesome. I'm a fairly new ukulele player so always appreciate the chords/lyrics to follow along with on the screen :)

Homeward Bound

Just joined. Love your teaching skills and your music, but, if it doesn't have the chords, I'm probably not watching... sorry.

Jeff Noll

The play along features are really really amazing. So helpful when you’re trying to follow all your awesome techniques. That said, this video is excellent and the original patreon lesson works really well.

Trevor G Wyatt

Sounded really good to me, a chord chart would be good, although my skill on a uke is very limited, nevermind best of luck

CL how in the world do you have time to produce all of the content and you actually answer every single comment. You are a machine. Boggles my mind how persistent and thorough you are. You are my hero.
