This episode was EVERYTHINGGGG!! So intense, emotional and tragic. Seems very supernatural. Loved knowing more about the lore and that it answered some questions but also gave us more to ask lol

RIGHT when I was about to go get food and hope with all my autism that I’d have something to watch when I get back home?? TENS ACROSS THE BOARD 🗣️😭😂

Phouka H

The fastest I have ever jumped on one of your SPN reactions!🍿💚

Kennedy spasic

Gah! Just finished Hail Mary! And now this!! Whoop whoop! This episode is such a good lore drop

ashley kuate

Loved the nice little touch of Dean being named after his grandmother, and Sam after his grandfather

orna

After 4 seasons we finally know why Mary said sorry to Sam in in Home!

Stacey K

And when we saw Mary as a ghost in season 1 Home, she apologized to Sam. Now that makes more sense!

Mackenna

Ahhhh such an amazing episode!!!🤩🤩

Amina

Anyone else not able to contain themselves after last week and kept watching season 4? 🙋🏻‍♀️ I've seen it half a dozen times before and still couldn't wait 🙈

Pixie_Pix

You guys should start saying “Wanna gather all the information watching the show, and not in the comments BELOW” so it rhymes lololol

deanandsamAO3

Poor Sammy. Cursed by his own mother before he was even born. :(

Pie

The scene where Dean talks to Mary is heart-wrenching. What a performance from Jensen. ‘Do you know what the worst thing is that I can imagine? The absolute worst? That my children grow up just like I did. No, I won’t let that happen.’ Please kill me now. An interesting detail: Mary strikes the deal to save John’s life on 2 May. That’s also Sam’s birthday. And it’s the same day Dean traded his soul for Sam’s life, and the day Dean went to hell.

WeeWheezey

Wild that Mary never told John any of this throughout their Marriage cause if you'll remember John had to work it all out on his own after Mary died! Not sure if Mary was just over confident and thought she could take on Azazel on her own or if she was just really niave in thinking the demon wouldn't return.

Amina

Y'all need to do the X-Files next! You'll see the actor who plays gramps in that one too

katyggls

This episode is so heartbreaking. That scene where Mary tells Dean that the worst thing she can imagine is her children being raised as hunters is just brutal. I really think that broke something in Dean to hear that.

Sanya Arif

The younger Mary actor always reminds me of Jo so I feel weird when I watch this lol

Liz

Another one I was waiting for! One of my faves in the series!

ja0netholmes

You actually can't imagine how pissed I was in my house in 2008 LIVIDDDDD

Tom

After suppernatural you guys should do the Winchester's it's only 2 seasons it's the spinoff of supernatural

Cass&Jason

"I'm going to hell. Again." is one of my favorite line readings by Jensen. Perfection.

Tmatts

Goated episode! I feel like when talking about best episodes, this one sometimes falls through the cracks but it really is a masterpiece of an episode.

Anne

John thinking hes getting justice for mary by becoming a hunter and making his children become hunters when in reality hes spitting on Marys grave with it 🤷🏻‍♀️ way to disrespect her memory John.

Purple Nurple

It's only one short season... it deserved more, but the CW was bought out by right wing conservatives and massacred every show and cancelled most of their shows! Jensen's company created it and 2 of the actors that met on the show - are still together!

Tmatts

Although he has no idea which just adds to the tragedy of it all. She never told him about any of it so he'd have no idea what her feelings would be.

Purple Nurple

One of my favourite episodes! And yes the young John Winchester actor could play Superman he does have that look! We find out a lot of information in this episode - we knew about the blood being given to Sam as we saw it in season 2 finale, but Sam never told Dean that... Also Cas made a new expression this episode - when he had his hand on Dean's shoulder when he brought him back to the future - speaking of - there's so many Back to the Future references in this episode.

Karia_Winchester

Same, which makes me feel weird when people ship Dean and Jo, I see them more as siblings more than together.

Molly

Don’t ever dwindle your discussions!!! I love hearing you all talk about the episodes 🩵

boleynns

Oh man, this episode is SO GOOD. I absolutely love Time Travel as a trope generally, so I am a little biased — but either way, I also think the reveals about their mom and her family being hunters, her making a deal with the Yellow Eyed Demon, etc. etc., was just all so mind-blowing and satisfying the first time I saw it.

Riwyn

The show creator Eric Kripke's son was born May 2nd 2007 so two years after the show had started.

Nancy Nicolai

My question has always been if the angels didn't send Dean back in time to "stop it" would Azael ever met Mary and she wouldn't have made the deal...also the actor who played young John is Matt Cohen & young Mary is played by Amy Gumenick✌️

YoursUNTRULY

Young John could play Superman! I've been saying that since the day this episode aired and I saw him for the first time!!

L

I havent rewatched this show ever since I dropped off I guess season 9 or 10 lol and ngl I thought I wouldn't enjoy this rewatch but this has ignited all the fun I had before and now im on season 8 LOL I forgot so much and how much I loved this show. Its fun to rewatch it with both of yall

Veronica

Such a good episode!

SnowMart

Season four really starts with a whole string of back to back bangers, god damn. 🔥

Alex Montrose

We done been telling you guys Season 4 does not play! I cannot wait for you guys to see the rest. But huni! Y'all might want to stock up on Depends and some tissues!

Alex Montrose

And why she recognized him when Azazel took Sam back to the nursery in his dreams.

shuff!

I love that it takes Dean (and the audience) a hot second to realize that we’re in the 70s because the show is just Like That I also love that there is an alternate universe version of Supernatural where everything’s the same but they’re driving around in a VW bus instead

Ebony

This episode breaks my heart. To know that who you are is the last thing your mother would want for you … 😭

Kimberly S. (Rawr)

Such an emotional & heartbreaking episode 💔 The fact that she wanted to get out of hunting & never wanted that life for her children was so sad. Especially knowing now that it was her death that pushed them into that life to begin with 😭 Sam sneaking off with Ruby again. Tsk tsk. Matt Cohen! Love him as young John. It was crazy to go back in time to see their parents. The Impala origins 🖤 The twist of Mary’s family being the hunters was so good. I really liked Dean getting to work a case with his family. The yellow eyed demon was savage. Learning that Mary made a deal with him to bring John back was devastating. The deal that started it all! So many feels in this episode. Castiel sending Dean to the past & warning him about Sam going down a dark path was an interesting premise. Then threatening they’d stop Sam if Dean couldn’t was WILD tho. The performances were so good. Especially Samuel as the yellow eyed demon 🙌🏼 Casting was on point. Absolutely loved this reaction & discussion 🖤

ariel mermaid

One of my favorite episodes lol 💕 same as charmed I love when they time travel

LeslieW

Love this ep, and Amy's portrayal of Mary is my favorite across both this and The Winchesters.

ariel mermaid

This guy that plays Sam and deans dad in the passed actually plays on my soap opera at the moment young and the restless lol

shuff!

Also love that you guys loved Mitch Pileggi (who played Samuel/Azazel). You’ll see a lot more of him if you ever get around to watching The X-Files.

Nicole Giesbrecht

God I love this episode so much and this whole damn season for that matter. The change in the look on Deans face from shocked to just straight pissed off when Azazel revealed that he was possessing Samuel and pushed Dean up against that book case was so subtle but obvious at the same time and is just class A acting from Jensen. And not just him all of the actors were bringing their A game this episode. It really is one of my favorites.

KatieBee

Yellow eyes is so insidious. Did you notice his timing? He let John pop the question, and then interrupted before Mary could get her answer out and killed him before either of them had resolution to the proposal. Another level of insurance that Mary would choose to make the deal cuz that couldn't be her last moment with him! Planning to spend forever with him but him never hearing the answer! Ugh yellow eyes is awful. Sick.

Stacey H

Awesome reaction as always! This was such a great ep. The time travel, seeing young John and Mary and Dean’s grandparents. So much happened! Mitch Pileggi is the actor who played Samuel Campbell/Azazel.

Susie

I find it interesting that you found similar mannerisms in Dean and his grandfather. I never did and I still don't, aside from being distrustful of other hunters. We have to remember that normal demon deals are for 10 years, so the child that would be affected had to be Sam, because the deal took place in 1973 and Sam was born 10 years later. Also, I was angry that Castiel made Dean go back in time to witness all that happened. It wasn't necessary, because he could have told Dean what he wanted him to know about Sam. He refused to even tell him why he sent him back and had him guessing simply because there wasn't anything in the past that he could stop. While it was very interesting to watch, I wound up being very frustrated with the angel.

Susie

I believe when he tells Dean that he couldn't stop destiny, it's meant to say that it would have happened one way or another. That is why I found it completely unnecessary to send Dean back on a fools mission. He could have simply told Dean what he wanted him to know about Sam.

Susie

That's strange, I don't see the resemblance outside of the hair.

Nancy Nicolai

But if Cass ( the angels) didn't send Dean back would John have bought the Impala, would Azael even seen Mary also maybe Dean wouldn't have believed Cass if he just told him?

Susie

That would be excellent! Hahaha! Perhaps people would actually understand that they don't want their opinions informed by the comments.

Susie

Good point.

Pie

I think either Castiel sends Dean back in every possible timeline, or Mary makes the deal due to other circumstances. But it’s bound to happen.

Nyssa Rawther 🍉🔻

Idk if she even put up any protections. Any salt around the house? I'd be SO paranoid I wouldn't even have kids tbh 😅

Trinity Bernhardt

I love how meaningful Eric makes their birthdays, though having her make the deal October 2nd would make more sense. 10 years to the day he actually visited would fit the deal lore better than 10 years to the day Sam was born. Just another fun birthday note: Dean and Jess both are born on January 24th, Eric's wife's birthday. The best character (it's a joke) and the love of Sam's life. Such a sweet homage.

Trinity Bernhardt

Cursed by a demon. Mary bears no blame. No way she could know the cost by what he said.

Trinity Bernhardt

I don't either, but for those who do I can see it being weird.

Trinity Bernhardt

Things would have happened slightly different maybe, but it all would have happened. I think he wanted the impact because he wanted Dean to understand he HAS to stop Sam. Dean will always stand with Sam, so to make him not just side with Sam against anyone threatening him. "Oh, so you 'think' there might be more and that is enough to threaten my brother?" Hearing it come from Azazel is so much more powerful.

Trinity Bernhardt

I don't think so. I wrote it under another comment, but I think hearing it from Azazel was necessary vs having him hear Cas say it with that warning. Dean would more likely just dig in against those threatening his brother.

Trinity Bernhardt

This episode is so good. I forget how jarring the constant reveals are the first time, but you made it so fun to remember. For an episode 95% Dean and guest actors they really did a great job stacking those actors. They all performed remarkably. Jensen of course was perfection. The way he hits those emotional moments... he plays my heart like an instrument. The scene where he meets his Dad is almost word for word a recreation of Back to the Future. A fun homage. Just a thought to your reaction to Mary knowing about the proposal. In my opinion an engagement should never be a surprise. The proposal can be. If you haven't discussed if you both want to get married and potential time frames I think it makes things much harder. Just too big of a decision to come out of nowhere.

Emma J Steele

The fact that you didnt yell "SKINNER!" when you saw Marys Dad like I did in my first watch tells me y'all NEED to watch The X Files next!! Amazing episode!

deanandsamAO3

Of course Mary could. She knew the demon was coming back to her after 10 years. She also knew it wasn't coming for her soul, so it must be for something else. Azazel told her that if he wasn't interrupted, nothing would happen. Even if she didn't know exactly, she should have been watching out for the demon when the 10 years were coming to an end. She could also have told John about the supernatural and the deal she made and maybe it could have been dealt with in some way. In any case, it can't be denied that her deal caused baby Sammy to be tainted with demon blood. Castiel also has blame. If he hadn't sent Dean back, then Azazel would never have run into Mary in the first place. The only one who is blameless in all of this is Sam. He's the victim of his mother's deal.

Laura Cordone

If you like time travel, you should watch Timeless, if you haven't already. Another Kripke show. It's only 2 seasons & not really horror, but it's so good.

Nycco G.

My goodness wasn’t this a heartbreaking and beautiful episode!?! In the DVD commentary track for this one, Eric talked about this episode (specifically the part where Dean convinces John to buy the Impala) nearly breaking Jensen’s brain LOL. There are a couple of bits like that: when we finally know why Mary apologized to Sam in ‘Home’, and my personal favorite - getting to meet a younger version of Daniel Elkins (the vampire hunter who we met in ‘Dead Man’s Blood’), I’d urge you to clock that name. || The scene between Dean and Mary when he’s trying to warn her about getting out of bed is SO good. Jensen is so good at portraying Dean’s emotional range. And the actress, Amy Gumenick, was wonderful as well. Young John was played by Matt Cohen and he’s really good too. (FUN FACT: the SPNFamily did a huge push on Twitter attempting to get him cast as Clark Kent/Superman when the C.W. was doing a show with him as a character. Unfortunately it didn’t work out, but we tried. || Would y’all be open to watching convention panels (without spoilers of course)? Seeing the boys do those panels made me fall further in love with the show and getting to know Jared and Jensen, or J2 as fandom lovingly calls them, is truly special! || Love you guys, hope you are doing well.😙😘😙

LilyLane

I am not either too big fan of time travels, but in this everything was changed from what we "thought" to know. Mary was from hunter family, knew supernatural. John was just regular guy. And that Impala never was John's "car" from the get go, but always Dean's in a way, because hey..thats how we actually wanted it to be. It also answers questions about why boys were never left for granparents, why John took them with him in shady motels and tought them to fight. And of course fabulous Mitch Pileggi who played Samuel Winchester, never lets you down, always nailing his characters.

Susie

I believe that Dean would have went to Sam had Castiel told him about the demon blood . I really don't believe it was necessary for him to witness all of that, especially if he was told that Sam was hanging out with Ruby. He never trusted Ruby and that would have been incentive enough. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I really don't think he needed to go back to 1973 on a useless wild goose chase.

Leanne M

I SECOND THIS! such an amazing show

Eris

33:11- Is it just me or is possessed Samuel giving off really strong Negan (TWD) vibes?

IneffableEnby

i always assumed that Dean needed to go there BECAUSE he was the catalyst for it. Maybe i'm looking too much into it, but from a time traveling stand point, most of the time it means it has all already happened. Time travel is always a hard and complicated topic because of just how many things can't be wrong about it, but from my understanding, Time is like a giant loop that have infinity number of loops very close to it. If Dean hadn't talked to John about the car, that would have been a different universe, a different reality. If Dean hadn't stopped to talk about the yellow-eyed demon to his grandfather, they would probably have lived, another different reality. I think Castiel was ALWAYS going to send Dean back, and Dean was ALWAYS going to see what happened to his family. But again, this is just me guessing based purely on the limited known logic of time travel

Jbug

LOOOVEEEE! cant get enough of supernatural 😍

Anthony

All the old school cars should’ve been a giveaway to the time. Dean wearing John’s leather jacket while talking to him 😞 Dean said his name was Dean Van Halen lmao Lmao calling his own mom a babe 😳 Great minds think alike, both dressed as priests! Lmao Yellow eyes - Azazel is back!! Mary’s worst fear came true 😢 Sergio, I really believe Jensen Ackles is one of the best male criers I’ve ever seen. Azazel killing John (again) got a great reaction from you guys ! “Your brother is headed down a dangerous road Dean. We’re not sure where it leads. So stop it… or we will.” Damn Castiel has some great lines! Yea shoutout to Mitch Pileggi he did great switching to Azazel!!

Shannon Turner

I don't think I've ever watched an actor who emotionally destroys me so consistently as Jensen Ackles. He's a phenomenal actor and so underrated. You mentioned that Mary was smooth like Sam, but I think it's the other way around. I think Dean is more like Mary (but because she's female, it will always be more charming and less slimy, soz Dean), and Sam seems more like John pre-losing Mary. John is portrayed as gentle and compassionate, smart and strong. And yeah, funnily enough, John (post-Mary) turned Dean into Samuel, the lone-wolf hunter. But because Dean is also like Mary, he loves his family and is loyal to a fault. The writing intricacies of the Winchester/Campbell family are just incredible. This is a show that truly demonstrates that it KNOWS its characters, inside and out, all the way from the writing table to the actors

I'm just Joe King

Lil tibit is the actor for Samuel, Mitch Pileggi plays Walter Skinner on X-Files and Supernatural shares a lot of actors and directors from the X files. Maybe its kismit that you guys should do Xfiles some day lol

SuuzQ

The actor playing Samuel/Yellow Eyes, Mitch Pileggi, has a big role in X-Files. In the genre, he's a legend and X-Files was a huge influence on Supernatural. I would totally watch you guys do an X-Files run.

pamysue

Tab was the first sugar free soda/pop. We didn't drink pop often but Mom was excited about Tab and brought home a 6pack. It was loaded with saccharine and tasted like ass. Diet soda has come a LONG way!

Tom

Have you guys thought about watching the Star Trek movies on here and YouTube

Tom

But this episode contradicts the very first episode in the first episodes season 1 episode 1 the lights flicker Mary should have known what that meant unless I'm missing something she probably could have fought off the demon for a little bit . I could over thinking it

Flubbedsquid

Azazel living the meme where you do something so bad that time travelers start appearing from the future to kill you

First Question

Omg Dean/Deanna and Samuel/Samuel. Good ear!

rickie woodson

"thats creepy" its actually kinda hot actually. and romantic. the angel dude is really intense and broody like a romantic league in a dark gothic supernatural fantasy novel. get your man king

rickie woodson

not a bummer ending to me. very drama. didnt need the to be continued though. it wasnt climatic enough for that. the story obviously continues next episode and for the rest of the season as this drawn out mystery from season one isnt going to be solved that quickly. so unnecessary. but i love a good origin/period story and some lore was dropped. castiel didnt say anything out of pocket. on the side of good and defeating evil, not individual people, especially if they could go down the wrong path and help the bad guys.
