Wow, season 4 is non stop. So far our favorite season but there's still more to come! This one really was made for Jensen Ackles to show all of his range. Such a good one and as usual we were left laughing and sad all at the same time!

Sam and Dean investigate the mystery of several men who apparently died of fright.

🚨Please be mindful of spoilers/hints or references/EMOJIS to future episodes/seasons in the comments! Thursday has become my favorite day of the week because of this! ❤️‍🔥

Kaylee Smeaton

I love the bonus credits scene in this episode, its so funny!

Purple Nurple

It's the 'eye of the tiger...' - I sang that on stage at JIB convention last month on Friday night karaoke with about 20 other fans on stage! we cheered when we heard what song it was!

Alejandra Perez

Yes!! One of the best episodes (in my opinion)

deanandsamAO3

I'm not fussy about this episode. Sure, watching Dean become ever more afraid is sort of amusing, but I felt too sorry for the ghost. Jensen's outtake at the end is cute, though

N

My favorite episode EVER here we go

Anthony Carbenia

Fun fact Jensen Ackles was not warned about Marie beforehand so that reaction was 100% real

Cass&Jason

S4 is my favorite season. Though 2 is close.

Anxious Em

Luther’s story is so sad. I do remember ppl talking about how fuvked up road hauling him again was, but Bobby’s explanation implies it’s not really Luther— the buru buru is something else created by Luther’s fear. I like to look at it that way, otherwise it’s too upsetting. Jensen really knocked it out of the park.

Tom

Lol You laugh but those are the most vicious dogs in the world . small dogs are always evil attackers

Amina

Also as someone with a teeny tiny dog that's too fond of being territorial, people do run 😂 his name is Buffalo Bill though, he was bound to have a killer personality

Pie

What Eric Kripke said abaut, why Dean got infected : Dean is not a dick. None of the writers, or anyone on the creative team of Supernatural, think Dean's ever been a dick, past, present, or future. He's a hero. Dean did not contract the ghost sickness because he's a dick. Victims contract the illness because they use "fear as a weapon." Dean asks Lilith at the episode's end, "Why did I get infected?" And she cryptically responds, "You know why. Listen to your heart." We, as the writers, probably should have emphasized this mystery more, I take responsibility for that omission. But the point is: the reason he was infected is because of a secret he's keeping. A dark secret that will be revealed (....) . And not at all because of any dickishness, implied or otherwise. Thanks, gang.

Gaby

This one kinda breaks my heart cause the ghost was so innocent, and the way they had to end him was brutal. It is a nice change from the "salt and burn" tactic, but I just wish the ghost was actually a bad person deserving to be that scared again. But yes, overall, another great episode!

Stacey H

This is such a great Jensen ep! Regarding the Eye of the Tiger in the end credits, that came about because Jared decided to hang back during one of the takes to see what Jensen would do. The director, Phil Sgriccia, has a background as an editor and loves to run long takes to see what the actors will do so he let the take run. And Jensen made the most of it. You can hear Jared laughing too.

Alex Montrose

Congratulations! You guys have now seen another one of the most iconic quotes from the show! Officially within the fandom, Dean saying: "That was scary!" is right on par with Sam saying: "I lost my shoe" as one of the absolute hallmarks of the show.

N

It breaks me that dean experienced actually 40 years in hell and just no one knows and he is acting like it was few seconds and since he came back he is just worried about his little brother

Lisa - Marie

love this one so much and eye of tiger scene lives rent free in my brain

Forest Ferret

I love this episode. Luther's story (and end) is so sad, but Jensen's sheer RANGE was a delight to see! So glad you caught the credits bonus scene!

Mackenna

A wonderful example of Jensens many facets ugh he’s incredible!!! So many iconic moments in this one, loved sweet dean.. I JUST WANNA GIVE HIM A HUG😭

Cass&Jason

Jim Beaver is, indeed, fluent in Japanese. And Jared Padalecki, from everything I've heard, is toxic after a burrito. Yellow Fever is also a term for the fetishization of Asian people, particularly women. And that's all I'm going to say about that. ETA I really must do a better job of proofreading.

Cyndy

I love that these characters are flawed. That makes them so much more relatable. Dean doesn't let people in. He doesn't show weakness. He can be really judgemental. And that's completely human.

eamcims

That guy DOES look familiar. He played the jerk werewolf hunter in Buffy and Sahjhan in Angel 😊

Sophie

The "Eye of the Tiger" clip at the end was a gift to the fans. Jensen did it just for fun and for the crew and it was so good, that they decided to and it to the episode. You can hear someone say "let it roll" and Jared laughing.

lelmDR.WHO

I always love this episode, but it also always breaks my heart how they had to terrify Luther's ghost to death. He already died the first time in such a tragic way. to do that to him again is so sad

Sophie

It is so hard for me to watch only 2 episodes a week! But I enjoy this journey with you guys so much. It's almost like watching it for the first time again. Thank you guys, you are great!

Alise Lynch

One of the ones I was waiting for!

Molly Campbell

I don't know about dancing, but Jensen sings, sometimes even at conventions. You can find videos of just him singing there (so no spoilers from the convention). Oh, actually, one of the band members is someone you'll meet on the show later, so make sure you don't look up any until this season ends.

Michele

That bit at the end was totally unplanned. Jared decided to see what Jensen would do if he didn't enter the scene when he was supposed to. Dean definitely just rolled with it and did what they do - have fun. The director and crew were also totally up for it. It's a fun and friendly set. They had become a big family by this point.

LeslieW

Another fav. I say that a lot this season, lol. Jensen is FANTASTIC this ep and I love Jared's goofiness led to jensen's impromptu music video.

katyggls

This episode is so funny and Dean really is so adorable as a scaredy cat lol. Also, totally agree about the way they had to handle Luther. It was awful. I get why they had to do it, but that one would have traumatized me if I was a hunter. My Grandpa had the real Yellow Fever in WWII while he was stationed in the Philippines. He was so sick they had to send him home, because even after he beat the illness, he'd lost so much weight and was so weak he was useless as a soldier.

katyggls

I mean, respectfully, I disagree with Eric. Dean is my favorite character, but he is a dick. He's shown to bully people a lot and he's kind of unnecessarily belligerent at times. That's fine. I think it makes him a more interesting character. He's a good person, but he's not "nice".

Kimberly S. (Rawr)

THIS is one of my all time favorite episodes! Jensen Ackles has phenomenal comedic chops! Every time I hear Eye of the Tiger I see Jensen in that post credit scene 🙌🏼 The book taunting Dean tho. “You’re dying…again…loser” always takes me out 😂 The cat & his scream is fantastic & iconic! The backstory of the ghost sickness was so devastating 😭 Poor Luther 💔 Him running from the most adorable little dog always gets me. His meltdown was so real. Yes Bobby speaking Japanese 👏🏼 The idea of having to scare the ghost to death was interesting since the buruburu is made of pure fear. Such a sad way to release Dean from the haunting. I still can’t get over Jensen’s acting. The way he’s able to portray an entirely different personality. The facial reactions alone 🙌🏼 Absolutely loved this reaction from y’all 🖤

LeslieW

I would love to see you react to some of jensen singing at convention videos. Especially 'Brother' that he sang to jared and Wanted Dead or alive with Corey Taylor. They are on YouTube, just the songs so no spoilers.

Danny

Funny enough whenever my mom has friends over she has to tell them I have a ball python. Id be in love in that reptile room lmao

Susie

Dean can certainly be sarcastic, belligerent and overall a smart aleck, this is true. He isn't perfect and has flaws, just as everybody has, but that doesn't make him a dick. There are people in real life who are far more belligerent, sarcastic and are bullies who never once tried to help anybody out never mind tried to save lives. I've seen some "dicks" both male and female, but in my opinion Dean isn't one.

Susie

You know, everybody says that Dean doesn't show emotions and is closed off, but I disagree. Dean tries not to let on what he is going through, but he eventually opens up to Sam when Sam leans on him. As for this episode, it is definitely a favorite of mine and I am not as big a fan of season 4 as most of the fans are. There are a lot of fan favorites and lines that aren't my favorite episodes or lines, but this definitely is one-I love! Luther's story is incredibly sad, but I am glad that he is no longer suffering. The outtake of Jensen is something that would have ended up on the cutting room floor if not for the Supernatural crew being who they are. It happened because Jared didn't show up when Jensen expected him to ( on purpose ), and Jensen just did his thing. Phil kept it rolling as he often did with these guys, and they decided to include it with the episode. As a result Jensen's eye of the tiger, which is fun, became very popular.

Susie

See, I'm not a huge fan of season 4 as most fans are, but I absolutely loved this episode. Jensen played scared Dean too well and it really made me laugh. It is a shame that Luther's story was so incredibly sad, but I am glad he isn't suffering anymore.

KatieBee

This one always makes me laugh so hard. The ghost's story is heartbreaking but the Dean stuff is so hysterical to me. Needed a good laugh today too. So glad you guys are on season 4, it really is one of the best. Top notch.

Bridget Wood

I got to see Jensen sing Eye of the Tiger last year at a Con. He definitely knows the words. I love how funny he is in this episode. You will enjoy the blooper at the end of the season from this episode.

rose mnor

That meaning is slang one, a controversial term used to describe a romantic or sexual fetish for people of East or Southeast Asian descent. It is a pun on the actual medical disease, playing on the historical "yellow" color terminology used for Asian people. For this episode, taken from the Fandom wiki: The title is a play on the phrase "feeling yellow"—a metaphor for cowardice and intense fear. I took that as referring to the ghost and Dean's plotline. My takeaway of its underlying meaning: the ghost is parallel to Dean's deepest emotional trauma from hell that has left him deeply vulnerable in this episode.

rose mnor

@ katyggls :- Bullying implies that it has a power imbalance in said action between perpetrator and victim, whether with the intention of the former to inflict harm verbally, mentally, or physically on the latter. And in this episode, that power imbalance was so severe that the sickness infected the perpetrator as karma. Can you give an example of Dean bullying someone severely, within the scope of what has been revealed up to this episode, that made him justified in being infected with said disease, like those in the narrative being told at this time? That one escapes my mind; it seems that I need a refresher, apparently.

Heather

Them having to drag him again is the only reason this my second favorite episode and not my favorite. Idk what else they could have done but that was so sad.

GhostBoy

Legend has it that the reason for the Eye of the Tiger blooper is because Jared missed his queue to enter so Jensen just started doing that and nobody stopped him.

Pie

English isn’t my first language, so I might not be able to capture the nuance of the word ‘dick’ 100%. In my opinion, he can be a bit of a dick from time to time. But he’s definitely not a bully. He’s a protector, a carer, and he’s got a big heart

rose mnor

@Pie That's my takeaway too, and similarly, English is not my first language. To me, "bully" has negative connotations in addition to meanness attached to its actions, while being a dick doesn't necessarily mean being all of that.

deanandsamAO3

Don't get me wrong. Jensen performed his scenes perfectly as the escalatingly fearful Dean. He is a great actor who can effortlessly range from highly emotional to comedic. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a fan of either brother being used for comedy relief. They are two men who have suffered terribly, yet are still generously trying to save strangers' lives. They are true heroes, and I feel stupidly defensive about them. :)

Shannon Turner

Such an epic episode! Something super interesting I never thought about before, when the Sheriff gets afraid, it's like he gets angry afraid, because he's actually an arsehole with no morals. But when Dean gets afraid, he gets small and scared. Apart from being very funny, I think it also proves that a lot of the Dean being mean or a dick is a mask he wears, probably created from a young age to prove to his dad that he was responsible and strong. Classic older sibling stuff that I feel down to my bones. Great writing.

BrandyLu

During the scene with the snakes Jared was so freaked out that he actually left the scene and watched from behind the cameras. If you watch the part where the snake is crawling on Dean you will notice they stayed in tight on Jensen because Jared was gone.

Katie Abbott

the lip sync at the end was completely unplanned, Jared just decided to not enter the scene and see what Jensen did- Jensen has said he doesn't remember doing this at all, he said at a convention "i sort of blacked out and they said 'u went full music video' and i went 'was it good?'. Jared decided to just not come into the scene, so the music kept playing, so i just went for it, and i don't know what happened. it wasn't rehearsed, it wasn't planned, i just let my body take over" .. i also love how it shows how much of a family the whole cast and crew became, with everyone cheering and laughing for him so much, and when Jensen steps up onto the window to sit in the roof of the car, u can hear Jared say "i love this guy" 🥹

Danijela r.

Eye of the tiger!! love this one ❤️ season 4 is too gooddddd

Sonja

I love this episode, but I also feel really bad for the ghost. Also, I love how patient and empathetic Sam is with Dean in this ep. 🥰 Regarding Dean being a dick, he sometimes really is lol. He has a habit of hitting and making fun of his brother, tried to hit on his brother's girlfriend, made a jailbait comment about a minor, made fun of a guy who got probed, laughed about someone getting bullied in this ep, and so on. He's still a good and caring person, tho, but I can see why he was infected (plus the fear factor).

Nyssa Rawther 🍉🔻

Omg I LOVE this episode so much. I love when they get Jensen to use his comedic skills. Dean WAS adorable this episode. I will say that, so far at least, to me I don't think Dean's a dick. He'd have never done what Frank did. He doesn't bully people. I will give him grace for the Ghostfacers because Dean and Sam were literally trying to do their jobs and those idiots kept getting in the way. Idk a lot of people who'd have the patience NOT to be dicks to them tbh. As for Luther...I feel so horrid for him. I wish there had been a better way to put him to rest.

Veve

OMG so good def need more and more each week

Astoria

As funny as the episode is, I really don’t think the ending was a good one. The man went through hell in his lifetime and met a death that couldn’t have been more gruesome, and then he has to relive that terrible fear of death all over again? Couldn’t they have put him out of his misery instead? I know you can’t save everyone, but that was really anything but a good idea to stop the disease, because Luther had been anything but a bad person and didn’t deserve to go through that horror twice.

RavenLord

The sheriff actor is familiar from Buffy and from Angel, different roles. On Buffy, he played the jerk werewolf hunter Cain when Oz discovered he was a werewolf. You already nailed who he is on Angel. :)

Justine

"Agents Tyler and Perry" Steven Tyler and Joe Perry from Aerosmith!

Phouka H

Great reaction, guys! Especially to the scream. Jensen has said before that Phil Sgriccia told him to do some over the top takes for that scene (just for fun!), possibly bigger than it was written. Naturally he liked that one so much he used it anyway. Lol. I appreciate how sad you found Luther’s story. The episode has some comedy gems, for sure, but I have to be in a melancholy mood for this ep. It doesn’t get less tragic on rewatches.

Isaac

"Aw he's adorable." You're damn right Bobby. Love everything about this episode. Also Dean's little tipsy interaction with the guy at the front desk 💕. My friends little sister used to make me play the end credit scene with Jensen any time I'd put this show on. 😭

LilyLane

What cracks me up in this episode, is how committed boys are with their FBI suits.. I mean who did not expect at least couple holes in those socks!!?

Trinity Bernhardt

I am defensive of them too, but these kind of episodes don't bother me. The hunter couple at the beginning of season 3 blaming them for starting the apocalypse and things like that infuriate me to no end. Even when someone I love puts undeserved blame on them. They carry so much guilt already. It probably helps that I know episodes like this are some of their favorite to film. Jensen loved playing Dean so opposite to himself. This and Phantom Traveler were two of Jensen's favorites that he was still referencing years later.

Trinity Bernhardt

You can also just look up his band, Radio Company. Completely separated from Supernatural.

Trinity Bernhardt

That is one of my favorite stories, because they had planned on a wide shot. Jensen was hilarious talking about them talking about everything being fine if he stayed calm and yet he could hear the snake wrangler wrestling with Marie to get her to go up on the couch. Epic.

Trinity Bernhardt

Brother is one of my favorite songs to listen to him sing. There is a music video with clips they should watch later. It's a beautiful edit, but too many spoilers.

Trinity Bernhardt

They do such a good job turning the comedic episodes into some of the most heartbreaking. Mystery Spot ended with us seeing Sam's spiral after Dean died. Here we see Luther. Sometimes there is no justice, in this life, or the next. I hate seeing our boys participate in that, but it is a realistic darkness. I do prefer the theory that the boru boru is not Luther himself, but just created from his fear. It is too tragic otherwise. I can't find sympathy for Frank. I know he truly believed Luther had hurt his wife, but it didn't give him the right to do that. Dean's fears are heartbreaking. He wasn't unaware of those fears, but he pushed them down. At the end I think he realized he couldn't do that anymore. The revelation of the 40 years... devastating.

Simon

It will just be banger after banger with every Episode, full of amazing Actors. Awesome Storys and really cool characters.

deanandsamAO3

I'm sure both Js enjoyed playing those lighter scenes, and I'm fine when it comes to brotherly banter between the two of them, but I don't like it when they're made to look silly. I prefer it when they're on a hunt, strong and efficient, taking out monsters and saving the victims; being the expert hunters that they are. I suppose everyone has their preferred way of looking at Sam and Dean. And that's fine. Each to their own. :)

Anthony

Love this episode and the outtake at the end!! Dean screaming is one of the best gif/meme from this entire show! Even Dean thinks he’s adorable, he’s said it in season 2 when Henrickson asked if he thinks he’s funny Not the truck stop waitress with the bizarre rash! 😵 Lillith (Sierra McCormick ) does a great job at being creepy with a smile and the way she delivers “four months is like fourty years in Hell… and you remember every second.” Scary. The yellow eyes flash on Sam was such a great touch! He knows every word. Excuse me? Have you not seen Rocky a million times also?? Lol If you aren’t a fan of Jensen Ackles by the end of this episode then idk what has to happen lol Yes Jensen definitely showed his range again this episode. I really think he’s one of the best tv actors ever.

Allie Bagz

I waited since deason 2 for yall to finally meet Castiel and get to his episode lol!! There are some good funny ones! I used to be able to scream like dean before I got throat cancer but now I just realized my 5 year old has my scream lol

dreamsofspike

I think Dean seeing the yellow in Sam's eyes right at the end there is a sign that the fears he experienced as a result of the ghost sickness were actually very real, very much a part of him. Most of them could be more or less dismissed after he was cured - but his fears about Sam still linger. He's afraid of what Sam might become. I completely HATE the solution to this one. Breaks my heart. :(

Hayley

“I’m right there with you man”….. “oh… oh oh we’re running for our lives” took me out within the first minute guys! 🤣🤣

pamysue

Agent Tyler and Agent Perry - Steven Tyler and Joe Perry from Aerosmith (aka the Toxic Twins)

pamysue

Also, old term... calling someone Yellow was saying they were a coward or a pussy. So like Scared Feven

p. l. watts ~ On Home

Supernatural utilizes subtext more than any show I've ever encountered. This episode, in particular, rewards watching for it.

Megan

I can agree with this because Dean can have dickish behavior but that's usually towards cry baby Sammy when he causes messes/makes them worse and towards demons. A few times he does get a little stern with witnesses because they need information. BUT, Dean was never a bully like the other people attacked. If anything, it'd make more sense for Sam to get ghost sickness because he pretends to be a soft, caring person. But that veil slips quickly when he's playing the victim card and in his killings (demons/monsters). Like someone said in a past video (could've been Sergio) Dean kills them quickly whereas Sam enjoys making them suffer first.

Crystal Taylor

Just wait until you see the gag reel hahahahahaha

rickie woodson

i need an episode that addresses how they pay for anything (gas, food, clothes, hotels)

Luke

"woodchip factory??" 💀💀

Flora_Ivy

Don’t know if anyone commented or caught this yet - but the Sheriff in this episode was also the Werewolf Hunter in season 2 of Buffy, when we find out Oz is a werewolf. That’s where I kept thinking I saw him from
