I also love in this episode that Alaric actively saves Damon's life -- which gives his punch at the end of the episode so much weight. I've heard some noooooot so great things about the actor who plays Alaric, but damnit if I don't adore his character.

I have no memory of future episode lore but I'm pretty sure vampires can compel someone to let them in - but that's harder in a town where lots of people can't be compelled because of vervain. Also (and I could be totally wrong because I get all my vampire show lores mixed up) but I thought any human can invite a vampire in but it's having some human owner on a deed that creates the barrier that doesn't let them in without an invite. However now that you've made me think about this - the rules are super confusing because humans own the school property and all the shops that they walk into so those must not count as homes? If someone knows how that works let me know too lol

I hope everyone takes Sergio and Cody's words at the top of the reaction to heart. Everyone who was around TVD fandom back in the day knows how toxic discussions about this show can get if people aren't committed to being respectful and kind to each other. Everyone in this community is a paid supporter of the channel, so when people take swipes at each other, they're taking shots at Sergio and Cody's other paying customers, which is not a great way to help them build the community. So I hope we all can mirror the behaviors these guys have always modeled, which is to lead with kindness, empathy and respect. This is one of my fave S1 episodes, not just for what happens, but for everything it sets in motion. I love the show best when our our characters are working together against common enemies, so it's always fun to see unexpected alliances form and new dynamics being explored. The natural chemistry that emerges between characters and actors at this point in the show is also really fun. You guys continue to really nail these reactions with lots of great insight and observations, so really excited to see you react to the rest of the season!

I wanna keep this as spoiler free as possible, but Stefan's problems with blood is one of my favorite character flaws/growth in this show easily.

I think its more relevant to the human having a private, secure space and since no one person owns a school [or any public place], it lets them get away with having access.

To be honest, though, it wasn’t very nice of Damon, but given the way that woman was treated, it was probably better for her. Not only was she a walking bar for the vampires, she was also manipulated like a toy, and let’s be honest, I wouldn’t even be surprised if they’d done some X-rated stuff to her.... And Elena was really getting on my nerves. Damon made it more than clear to her that he couldn’t risk any distractions when there were dozens of vampires there and he wanted to free Stefan, and she was simply putting herself in danger. And what does she do? She runs into the house with a syringe without having even the slightest hint of the defensive skills she’d need...

I'll answer Cody's question, I don't believe it to be a spoiler since it's so technical and also was kinda explained in the show already, but I'll put some spaces below in case you don't wanna read. :) So anyone who is a resident or owner of the house can invite vampires in. If the landlord got killed, the tennants can still invite vampires in. But if the house is owned by the only person who lives there, and they died, then those who would inherit the house can invite vampires, even if their name isn't on the deed yet. That's why Damon asked the lady about any relatives, she had none so there would be no new human owner. BUT changing the name on the deed to make someone else the official owner of the house would work like kind of a reset, so only the new owner and the current residents can invite vampires in, and if any previous owner who DOES NOT live in the house had invited any vampires in the house, they can no longer enter. Hope this helps :)

Some of the rules are explained in later episodes and in the spinoff(s). In this episode, he asked Mrs. Gibbons if anyone else lived there or if she had any family, because if she did, then killing her might still not have let him in because the ownership would've defaulted to them. Since she lived alone, killing her made it to where he could get in. Same with their own house, when their nephew was still alive, no other vampires could get in, but since he died and the only other people that lived there were vampires, now any vampire can get in

On the subject of Damon and Elena, the chemistry between them ‘might’ also stem from the fact that they were a couple in real life for a while. As a result, it’s no longer entirely clear what is real-life attraction and what is that of the characters. 😅

This is the episode that I started to dislike Elena as a character. She just *has* to be involved in everything, and she won't listen to anybody else, even in seriously volatile situations. This is also the episode where, although i already liked Alaric, he shot up several more notches for me. I loved him being able to put aside his personal feelings and work with Damon for a greater good. I miss Bonnie. She lights up the screen and is one of my favorite characters. I would have loved to have seen what could happen with her character if the production of this show had been in better hands instead of Julie Plec. I would also like to add that I've read the comments on here so far, and I really appreciate the thoughtfulness and interest of everyone in ongoing discussions. I follow another Patreon with *very* toxic followers, and the community that Cody and Sergio have built here is quite the opposite of that. Emotions will run high -- we're only human, after all -- but there are some really good people here. I feel this is a safe space to discuss our likes and dislikes of different characters without getting verbally attacked. One of the other characters in this show becomes a favorite of mine, but I still cannot say how or why or even who yet, and so I must wait, LOL. So right now, it's Bonnie, Alaric, Jeremy, and Damon (for all his flaws, or maybe because of them) who are my favorites.

To answer your question, for blood donation, it is recommended that afterwards the person eat iron-rich food and I think vitamin C. Best to avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours for faster recovery.

You mentioned that Damon probably knew what would happen if Stefan drank human blood and seemed to want him to go down that path, and also didn't look surprised walking in on Stefan devouring the blood bags. Remember when Damon first came to town, he told Stefan that he promised him an eternity of misery. If we still had that same Damon from the first episode, he probably would have welcomed the site of Stefan with the blood bags. However, they've gotten closer now. You could tell by the look on his face that even though he wasn't surprised, he may not have necessarily been happy about it because he knew that's not what Stefan would want for himself

Vicki was a tortured character for sure. Human or vampire she was going to have it rough. But as Lexi said about Damon... Vicki embraced all the bad stuff about being a vampire right off the bat. Sad. Her mom, her friends, Tyler. Her brother was the only one besides Jeremy that really really cared for her.

It’s so unfortunate because I actually get so nervous commenting anything about my favorite characters/ships or any sort of opinion. I honestly also get anxious about even reading the comments in general, so that really sucks. The fanbase is very passionate about defending these characters 🙃 Oop dissension in the vampire group. “I have 2 liters of a soccer mom in the fridge” is a wild sentence 😂 Not them kidnapping & torturing Stefan. “Why does he have to be shirtless?” The real question is why not? Damon & Alaric having to work together to save Stefan was such a fun dynamic. I absolutely loved the heist-like Stefan rescue with them trying to extract him stealthily. Oof Caroline finding Vicki‘s body & them having to notify the Donovans & seeing everyone’s reactions was rough. Oop Stefan was very thirsty 😳 This was a tense episode. Sad seeing Anna realizing Jeremy wanted to turn to be with Vicki. Definitely feel bad for her. Another great reaction 🖤

The actors in this show really are phenomenal. As it keeps going we get to see more of Nina (Elena) who is honestly one of the most underrated actresses of the time. And Paul (Stefan) really gets to show his phenomenal acting skills too and the two of them are just so talented and amazing. This is just the beginning of their skill set!

Fun thing in the book was that Elenas home was partially rebuild, so a vampire had to be invited into both the old and new parts of the house. Otherwise they just couldnt step into certain rooms.
