Misha Collins is in “Girl, Interrupted.” You should watch it, Angelina Jolie is amazing in it. Misha has a very short role in the film, but he looks great lol

Barb

this episode manages to have some of the worst aged moments i’ve seen in this show but at the same time some of the most gut wrenching in the season 😭

Michele

The Pudding line was originally going to be done by Sam, but Jared and Jensen felt it would me more something that Dean would say/do than Sam, so they just switched it without asking permission. They did stuff like that a lot and the directors seemed to agree with it when they did. This episode is low on my list, but it has a few interesting points. Like the boys' mental states at this point. And the part where Sam and Dean are talking to the doctor and just telling the truth so they'll be seen as crazy is funny.

Barb

it being a well known meme or being a product of the time doesn’t mean it can’t be called out though. i dislike the joke too - that and the “crazy girl” non consensually kissing both of the boys despite dean “liking it. “

Barb

he looks great as a reason to watch is sending me but so true

Elesia

The plushies are really cute ( ◜‿◝ )♡

Sophie

It's notbone of my favourite episodes. But I always laugh when they talk to the doctor about the apocalypse and the Angel with the trenchcoat. It's hilarious 😂

Larimar

Wow. The therapist from this show is in The Flash. They also have wraith's Time wraiths.

gloomygraveyardgirl

I really dislike this episode too be honest. Maybe i just feel icky because im a bipolar person and the whole "crazy" and "nuthouse" things just feels offensive and ignorant. There are ways to talk about and portray psych wards in media without doing so many harmful stereotypes and words. But yeah. This episode is just one of those that i really dislike. Also having a female character that is overly sexual is so icky and sexist too me. So i usually skip this one when i rewatch. I also think its so oddly placed considering what the last episode was about.

Barb

you can really see when the misogyny comes shining through from the writers into the characters bc they’ll be saying stuff that doesn’t even make sense for their character like sam with the “you can’t tap that” like Ew…. also #notmysam

The Horror Bandwagon

Totally forgot to add in where we show and tell them in the beginning!!! 😭 We finally got our first collectibles of the show :)

Barb

the plushies are so cute tho aww

Barb

me finally watching the episode with y’all despite it paining me to rewatch

Barb

these two episodes aside happy anniversary to the day dean winchester was saved and castiel was introduced 🎉

RavenLord

Sort of a 'meh' episode with tasteless jokes that have not aged well, but I thought the wraith design was good, and it was nice to have a different kind of monster. Especially as a break in the demon/angel thing, because that's rather relentless this season. A lot of people like the main plot, but I have to say that Season 5 is one of the most difficult for me to get through personally; I'm not really into the huge celestial war apocalyptic thing, LOL. Anyway, that was an irrelevant comment I just made, and I really came in here to say that I think rather than the boys abandoning Martin, that Martin is in there voluntarily. That's the impression that I got, that he's having a hard time dealing with trauma and checked in, then when he realized something was going on, he called in hunters to deal with it.

September 18th “Dean Winchester is saved!” -Anna Happy 18th Birthday to Castiel! and Happy 21st Birthday to Supernatural this week!

I work in mental health and no, you don't talk to people who are struggling in the way that the male doctor was speaking to Sam & the other person in the group, I can't remember if we got his name. The dialogue was clearly written for episode suspense. To plant the questions in the audience's mind of who could the wraith be, who has suspicious lines, how many red herrings can we plant through dialogue? But I don't appreciate it. It paints every person who works in a mental health care facility in a bad light. In training we learn to use de-escalation tactics first and it almost always works. We also learn to use the least invasive and completely harmless physical holds if the person is a clear and immediate danger to themselves or others, and ONLY then. In 10 years I've been chased with a weapon (belt) once and attacked on 3 occasions. And I've never had to use a physical hold and I've never talked to anybody the way the doctor in this episode did. Pure Hollywood pulp. Dodging away from the person (also taught in the class), using my words and using our de-escalation strategies has always worked. And even if it comes to that, we release the hold as soon as the person has begun to calm down. There is a strategy called mirroring emotions where you can sometimes get a person to de-escalate with you if you meet them at their emotional level (loud voice met with a loud voice) and then as you keep talking with them, you lower your voice more and more, step by step, and some people will naturally respond by mirroring what you're doing. The best example is that it's the reason babies smile back at us even though they don't understand what a smile means yet, because the impulse to mirror social cues is hard-wired into our psychology from birth. But then the key is just using volume, not using a mean tone or harmful rhetoric. And you have to know your person. Anyways short answer is no, you don't yell at individuals like that. And you shouldn't in your personal life eitherrrrrr.

KatieBee

and about the bit with Sam being all loopy on medication, you also don't do that in a mental health facility. It's called chemical restraint, you don't give people medications to keep people "docile". You have to have a doctor's order for very specific purposes to give any sort of medicine period, even a laxative for somebody who is constipated. One time I had to get an order for hydrogen peroxide, to clean a wound after somebody's surgery, because I'm not an LPN I'm a medication aide and that comes with restrictions. Sure it can be picked up OTC at the pharmacy but once you are working in a facility it's different. Everything has to have an order. Band aids have to have a standing order saying it's okay to "cover a wound". No doctor would order something that would chemically restrain a patient like that, they would lose their whole career.

Cyndy

Seriously. Sam would not refer to a person as "that". And the way they were talking about mental health....yuck.

Miss Maya

"Girl, Interrupted" was one of my formative 90s movies growing up love the reference with this episode. and yes baby Misha was in it :) damn feels like another life. having said that I agree with others so much tactless and typically 2000's ignorant and offensive stuff lol

Barb

this was actually really interesting to read thank you for the information

Shannon Turner

I actually like seeing older shows portray mental health. This episode is 15 years ago now and I believe we have come a long way in how we view mental health in such a short period of time. Even people's negative reactions to these episodes are a relief to witness because I think we're very much moving in the right direction of "this isn't okay." Reviewing where we came from with societal mindset of these types of things, is really important; that's how we keep moving forward and refuse to take a step back

KatieBee

I'm glad it was interesting. Fun tip I learned in that class that works for people who have kids: If they're holding something dangerous or something you don't want them to be holding, try just offering them something else they want more. They will drop the other object you don't want them to have in order to take the more fun thing from you. Fun tip I learned in that class that works on dogs who won't release the chew toy from their mouth or something else maybe something that could harm them that you don't want them to have in their mouth: Stabilize the back of their head with your off-hand for their protection and stability. Push the object further into their mouth (not down their throat) and it causes the jaw to open because of leverage. Then you can pull it out quickly because the jaw is open more and it doesn't cause harm to their jaw. We learned that for in case we get bitten. Cuz if you just pull away... the teeth will take a chunk of you with it. You've gotta open the jaw first by pushing in and then quickly getting out once the jaw levers further open. Honestly you probably shouldn't use it with a chew toy because you should just train them to respond to "drop it" and not introduce power struggles between you and your dog, but it's great in an emergency if they are biting some dangerous object. 🤷🏻‍♀️ just use physics. I feel like those are useful things I learned from the class that translate to everyday life.

Old Soul

I wonder how it was for Jared Padalecki given his openness about his own mental health struggles? ... I just imagine it being difficult for him to push through the stereotype of being "crazy"

Molly Campbell

I always skip this episode during a rewatch. It hasn't gotten any better from the last time I saw it.

katyggls

This one definitely has some issues. And yeah, as someone who has mental health issues and has been in a mental health facility, this episode definitely doesn't portray that either accurately or humanely. I do think it was good that they touched on the idea that both Sam and Dean have genuine mental health issues.

pamysue

Pretty much always in life, you are going to look at stuff 20+ years back and find characters doing things you now find "it hasn't aged well" or finding stuff very "cringe". I get it. I grew up on 60s tv that was full of blatant racism, misogyny, homophobia and every other thing we have evolved (somewhat) from. You just have to watch it for what it is and be grateful that we do a better job now. It makes me sad that it ruins it for some people. But I get it. "All In The Family" was on from when I was still pre-teen and through my teenage years I think. I cannot watch it now. It is embarrassing to remember how people acted (and some still do unfortunately) ✌️💖

Deb

That was the phrase at the time though. To 'tap that'. You wouldn't say 'tap her'.

Lucy

The plushies are so cute! 🥰 This episode is both better and worse than I remember it being. Great mystery, lots of subtle clues as to what's happening, but also very poorly aged dialogue.

Kristine

Was waiting for this episode! Love it! 🥰

Jessica

Wait he’s in girl interrupted?? I have seen that movie so many times. I need to find a scene he’s in.

Barb

i know the phrase. i just dislike it and don’t think sam would be the type to use it.

Pablo Luis Perez

Whenever I think about these conversations and if it were happening to me I know I would say, "You know that part in horror movies when the person is telling someone the truth and they don't believe them and then get unalived..? And when you watch these movies you say the same thing? Yeah this is that moment." lol

deanandsamAO3

Interesting episode. I loved the interaction with the doctor at the beginning .lol. Poor Martin. Not everyone has the strength of will to resist the horrors of the hunting life. Doped-up Sammy was so cute, as was his anger-driven version. I don't know which one I liked best. Mmm! Sam finally told Dean he loved him, which I'm sure made big brother Dean very happy. I adore the monster-of-the-week episodes because we get the brothers on their own, hunting, talking about their feelings, and running around so handsomely in their FBI suits. :)

Nina

Omg the plushies 😍

Mari is Up All Night

The fun thing about this episode is that you cant trust their instincts, you cant trust anything they see or hear starting very early on,but you dont know that. So, did the girl that came and kiss them really exist? Is the doctor really talking to them in the tone that he's talking to them or is that just their feelings about psychiatrists coming through?I like to rewatch this sometimes and wonder whats real.

Mari is Up All Night

Yeah, tap that and hit that were used for everyone, both men and women and it wasnt calling the person a that it was short for "tap that A**" i forget what made it popular, it was either a song or a movie or something lol.. it was super common slang at that time. I remember being happy that they had matured enough that Dean didnt actually end up in bed with that woman.. Because for a long time, women who were really sexual were considered to be mentally ill and it might have been right around the time when "sex addiction" was in the news. But also, given that they were going crazy at the time, how much of that was real?

Anita

PUDDINGGGG iconic

LeslieW

Fascinating. Also as someone with a child with mental and behavioral issues I understand how much love and patience you have to have so thank you for all you do for others and the tips here are great, I never learned the mirroring one which sounds really interesting.

LeslieW

Yeah I thought Martin voluntarily admitted himself in the first place and wants to stay.

LeslieW

IMO this ep has good points and bad stuff that really hasn't aged well. The things I like are them telling the truth at the beginning; the boys differing reactions to what the wraith did to them, (dean withdrawing into himself and making himself smaller and Sam expanding outwards with anger taking up more space around himself); pudding is just funny because it is so Dean even though that was originally a Sam line that J2 traded when filming; and I liked the introduction of a new monster, the wraith; and I loved that deans doctor was all in his head, that was a cool twist.

Amina

Y'all know I comment every week about how much I look forward to these watch-alongs. I had commented on the Yellow Fever episode about my little hellhound, Buffalo. Well this past week that 8-lb hellhound graduated to terrorizing the angels in heaven. 😢 Please recommend a scary series or movie for me to get lost in below. Should I start From?

Alex Montrose

Another absolute milestone episode and a milestone moment!!!!!! Love this episode so hard.

LeslieW

Oh I forgot I love the doc separating them because 'they're dangerously codependent'. Spot on doc!

Elisia

I absolutely adore this episode. I like that they tackle Sam's anger issues (and resolve it in the most Winchester way possible), but more importantly... high Sammy is adorable

Wham8

Castiel doll FTW.

Rhast

I like this episode because we get to see Dean be honest about his feelings. I hate this episode because it's SO WRONG in everything it does medically. I'm 6 minutes in and mad. That is NOT how you take a BP. That's the basics of the basics.

B-dad

Girl Interrupted might have to be a patreon exclusive. Lots of words YT don’t like and could give you issues getting it cleared! It’s not THE BEST EVER but it touches on some vital topics for surely

Elisia

I actually have a theory for why Sam is always tied down... IRL- his height lol. Keeping him down like that probably makes it a lot easier to keep him in frame with other actors. In the show though, it probably has to do with threat management. For monsters who want to hurt him but not necessarily kill him, keeping him restrained on his back is probably more secure than to a chair or post or something. It keeps someone that big and that strong a lot more vulnerable

B-dad

You just watched it before you knew who he was. Mischa was also on Charmed which is where I originally recognized him from. Recently on TVD I realized a random wolf dude was Oliver Queen from CW Arrow. And seeing Elijah on True Blood as a hick robber😱🤪😜❤️

B-dad

This how it gonna be when you have kids. We will just see them when they are like 11 on accident and you’re like oh we forgot to mention🤪❤️❤️😂 Be safe we all love you guys! Even Plushtiel

B-dad

BARRY ALLENS MOM! Reverse flash incoming 😱😱

B-dad

Be well. ❤️ it’ll always hurt but it’s because of the love still there. Watch the show Alias or Fringe. Both only 5 season shows that make you use your mind. Great way to keep distracted. Fringe is like science detectives. And alias is spies with possibly magic/science?!? 🫶

Laura Cordone

I really thought you'd love the pudding scene. Bummer.

B-dad

Plushtiel ❤️

B-dad

I like the realism of Nip/Tuck. It satisfied my surgery watching needs 😂😂❤️😜

Cassie

Doesn't he always look great? 💅

Cassie

Where are they from?! SPN plushies are hard to find!

Blue Dragonfly

Sooo true! Also for many other topics.

Felix Cabrera

Like yall said I think the message is incomplete/to be finished. But i think the main point of the episode is to highlight our boys have issues even if they dont talk about it. Sam needs to sit down and reflect on what and who hes mad at meanwhile Dean needs to sit his butt down and realize he cant and wont save everyone and thats not his fault.

rickie woodson

Got my merch sticker today. Thanks! You are literally the only one who sent it despite me being a patron to others for YEARS. Special 🥰

rickie woodson

hey, its white lotus! whats he doing here

rickie woodson

CALLED IT! she is the only one that is super cheery and happy without a care in the world, so she had to be the wraith. i'd be happy at a free buffet too!

rickie woodson

therapy teaches us we are responsible for our emotions not other people. someone sad or did something you didnt like? you can brush it off, get angry, and/or get even. whats the difference between sarah not getting mad at being called a slur by john and you getting mad by being called a slur by john? food for thought. eastern philosophy, meditation, therapy, and enlightenment will help you to own your own power. "i control me. the world does not. what they do is a reflection upon them not upon me" simple pimple, easy peasy

Matthew S

God I love this series

NTS2077

It's pretty realistic in some cases. a friend of mine has DID and she's dealt with so many arrogant asshole doctors who refused to believe her. Some of them really did yell at her telling her to stop making things up. Even ones who sat there and watched her switch and it was often a very.. alarming and abrupt change. Sometimes she would switch so fast and so many times at once that it looked like she was having a seizure. My point is.. it wasn't things someone could fake. Almost all of these doctors accused her of attention seeking and downplayed her experience. It took her about 6 years to find a doctor who even believed her. . Another 6 years to find one who actually helped her. like any professional setting you will have a mix of people and some of them will be horrible. We shouldn't just show good doctors on TV.. because very few of them actually are good.

Barb

i think they bought those ones off jared’s website? idk for sure but they were talking about buying from it in a different reaction

Giselle4991

Ooo please react to Girls, Interrupted! It's one of Winona Ryder's most memorable performances. Might also have to include it in the "disturbing movie" category though.

Chloe Grace

I agree it’s sad to see! As someone with severe ocd - which is massively misunderstood in media - seeing them say things like “pick your acronym it all spells crazy” is devastating.

gloomygraveyardgirl

I agree. And i was honestly relieved that Cody and Sergio didnt find this episode funny. The fact that the "pudding" things is so funny to people is baffling too me. i always found that scene just offensive and innapropriate.

Jbug

I never actually realized how much these boys repressed mentally/emotionally. Absolutely agree with yous that in older shows they presented mental health in a very unusual way.

Anthony

Dean averaging 50 plus beers a week is crazy Dean does love pudding! 💀 Yes The White Lotus and he’s the uncle in Napolean Dynamite lol “I want him now, he’s larger.” Supernatural is wild af Sam doing a little boop to Dean and his sound effect kills me lmao Some bleak endings recently

Kait

Yeah aside from Sam almost killing the doctor, which you COULD excuse as him believing the guy was a monster not a person, he also beat the hell out of those human orderlies and even smashed one's head through a glass window without any concern for their lives. Sam wasn't in his right mind, of course, but still scary stuff! The messiness of this episode aside, I think it's interesting we see that the thing Sam is most repressing is anger, and what Dean is most repressing is fear. AND we get the acknowledgment that dean is being 'haunted' by their father... Some interesting character insights.

Eline Frijns

I am also someone with Bipolar and do not feel good about this episode at all. I really dislike to use of the word “crazy” and how mental health is portrayed not only in this episode, but in general (series, films, media etc.). And I 100% agree with you on the female character!

gloomygraveyardgirl

*hugs* bipolar is not an easy thing to live with. And it also doesnt help that media often gets it so wrong. In general i feel like mental health is rarely portrayed accurately. Also the whole "nymphomaniac" trope is so gross. Weird how pretty much exclusively women are called that.... hmmmmmm i wonder why men who have loads of sex dont get put into institutions... and the way its portrayed here is just disgusting. But then again supernatural is pretty sexist in general. (i love the show but it has some mayor issues)

Kimberly S. (Rawr)

This episode leaves me feeling uneasy throughout. That was such a sad intro with the doctor not believing her. Sam & Dean literally telling the truth to get put into the hospital was great 😂 Dean quoting Hannibal Lecter tho. I liked his dynamic with the therapist. The “pudding” scene always kills me 💀 Sam all hopped up on medicine was a great scene. “Boop!” 😂 Her not being there was wild. The place affecting both the brothers in different ways was interesting. It really amplified the underlying feelings, issues & emotions. They definitely don’t address & express their feelings as much as they should. The old bottle everything up til it boils over method always turns out well for them 😢 I really liked your breakdown of the portrayal of mental health in these older TV shows & how they haven’t aged well. I totally agree but I’m glad they didn’t go overboard with it like I’ve seen in other shows before. Excellent reaction & thoughts 🖤
