Thank you for the support! You guys are awesome!

Official cause of death: Inability to recognize when someone is antagonizing a room into providing an exemplar sacrifice. That or "Ego exceeds survival instinct/common sense."

I waffled over the extortion amount. Our vampy tentaclized lense flarey cape guy here isn't looking to bankrupt them or force them into desperate action against him. He just wants some steady income. Obviously, they're not going to take too kindly to extortion, as gangsters are famously unamused by karmic irony. I googled "how much money do Triads make in America" and it turns out there's some big legitimate company called Triad that muddles search results, but it seemed like the gangster Triads clear a few billion a year, mostly in the drug trade. Honestly I don't know if they even bother with protection rackets. Skimming a few thousand off a bunch of restaurants seems like more work than it's worth, honestly. As far as I know, protection rackets are just a thing that happens in TV shows because today's TV writers learned about it from yesterday's TV writers even though crime syndicates have all abandoned the nickel and dime stuff in favor of drugs and cybercrime and playing the stock market. Of course, it doesn't matter what these guys are into, as long as they have warehouses full of pallet-jacks of cash.

I'm glad to be done with this sequence. I had some stuff written that could have extended it for a day or two, but it's all story that can be put off till later and I'm eager to get back to superheroine antics.

Missing word last panel: violent murder OF you entire...

codesurfer

one piece of writing advice I've heard that was considered very wise, never give a real number because your fans will have more time and energy to scrutinize it than you have to explain it.

Forecaster

Violent murder?! In this comic?! Unbelievable!

Justaguy

I can see protection rackets by subsidiaries being a thing just because you don't want someone ELSES protection rackets messing with your drug trade.

Michael Obert

As the lady said: thank you, for your cooperation.

Kizik Ucalegon

Huh. Is this the vampiric tentacle golem thing that escaped, I wonder? It certainly seems like the vampiric tentacle golem thing.

Alysandir

To be fair, his asking price really IS quite reasonable. There are pro athletes making more than this.

JasonAW3

Yep... Not just an Alari, but most likely, a very SPECIFIC Alari...

JasonAW3

Panel 7; he should have been wearing the dark brown pants... Tan pants are still going to show...

Ludu

Dang, was that movie awesome. Penny ante shake downs like protection rackets are still done, but it pretty much moved to cyber crime because "internet". You can tell someone is new to a gang, because it's almost always the first thing they do.

Demian Buckle

Can't fault his business model, instead of having to deal with a large number of civilians who could call the cops, he targets a small number of criminals who target them.

Paul Rendell

I believe that should be "murder 'of' your entire extended family" in panel 8.

Matthew Lambert

Now I'm curious what that guys voice sounds like, since he seems to be made of a series of tubes

Czarzhan

"Obviously, they're not going to take too kindly to extortion, as gangsters are famously unamused by karmic irony." This is a great sentence, and I'm going to steal it for a story I'm (thinking about) writing.

Town Crier

Always have Power Defense. Always.

LucasTheLost

Ha! That guy never saw it coming! (Y'know, cause he was blind. (Right?))

LucasTheLost

I'm half expecting him to transform at least partially like the hot mosquito chick from One Punch Man

martin leske

he is only sleeping. also that was not blood it was jam, leftover from breakfast

Blood Raven

Like, 30,000 dollars isn't just a pittance, its a steal on their end. I'd not even hesitate and just pull out my fucking wallet and take out the requisite cash. I'd even ask if he wants it in USD through unmarked bills or a wire transfer. I'd then offer him a job as arbitrator for internal disputes because he's a third party that doesn't give a shit about anyone group in particular, making him perfect for keeping everyone honest.

Eric Loken

I think local gangs are more into extortion. Perhaps smaller groups of the bigger crime syndicates may as well - to my understanding, they are not like corporations controlled by a CEO, it's more like a feudal society of smaller groups answering to their overlords. Also, just because it isn't worth that much to them, doesn't mean someone wouldn't do it anyway. Some of these guys would get off on the power, telling other people what to do, being able to bully others around would matter more than money. And yes, that can come back to bite them on the ass; people are kinda stupid that way.

eddi_TBH

Some people cannot handle being ordered around. They make poor minions at best.

Tim Malmström

I think that's supposed to be "will result in the violent murder *OF* your entire extended family."

JasonAW3

Well, from the bald guy's perspective, that whole encounter rather sucked. I mean, some meetings leave you with dry mouth, but this one? Pretty much dry EVERYTHING... Of course, if he was into that sort of thing...

Matt Parkent

Red Hood's dufflebag full of subordinate's heads is still the best intimidation tactic.

Hurley

Dave, just so you know, a pallet jack is the tool you use to move things around. The movable platform is just a pallet.

Terence Bryant-White

Well done David, I'm getting "The Mummy (first remake)" flashbacks in the best possible way 😅
